Covering receivers "tightly" is much, much harder than it looks. I know Tommy Nobis wasn't a DB, but I think he once commented on how hard a DB's job is - something along the lines of "they [the receiver] know where they're going. You don't."you would think that with only 3 rushers we would have extra players in the secondary to COVER RECEIVERS TIGHTLY. But maybe there is some secret nuance that I am not aware of that allows for open receivers and YAC in these situations. Can anyone help a brotha out?
I liked what we did in press coverage against OkState, but that only gets you so far. In the end, it's the classic risk/reward calculation: If you rush linebackers and maybe bring a safety/corner blitz, you can disrupt the QB's timing and hopefully cause an errant throw (or even get a sack). But that runs the risk of fewer coverage guys, leaving receivers open. On the flip side, if you leave more guys in the secondary, you may have better coverage, but no one can cover a receiver forever (see: Auburn last week). If Washington protects Penix and gives him time, he'll find somebody open.
