UT vs Washington Preview

you would think that with only 3 rushers we would have extra players in the secondary to COVER RECEIVERS TIGHTLY. But maybe there is some secret nuance that I am not aware of that allows for open receivers and YAC in these situations. Can anyone help a brotha out?
Covering receivers "tightly" is much, much harder than it looks. I know Tommy Nobis wasn't a DB, but I think he once commented on how hard a DB's job is - something along the lines of "they [the receiver] know where they're going. You don't."

I liked what we did in press coverage against OkState, but that only gets you so far. In the end, it's the classic risk/reward calculation: If you rush linebackers and maybe bring a safety/corner blitz, you can disrupt the QB's timing and hopefully cause an errant throw (or even get a sack). But that runs the risk of fewer coverage guys, leaving receivers open. On the flip side, if you leave more guys in the secondary, you may have better coverage, but no one can cover a receiver forever (see: Auburn last week). If Washington protects Penix and gives him time, he'll find somebody open.

We’ve had good chemical engineers from Bama and Auburn. Auburn is noted to have the better program.
I may be a little biased but certainly between Auburn and Alabama, Auburn is better. My son is a Chem Eng from Auburn and has done for himself. The big companies start scouting in the students' junior year. If you want to work for one of the big companies, you'll probably have a job offer before you start your senior season.

I think against our last two opponents we were able to play tighter man coverage because their receivers were less of a threat. The Washington receivers are the real deal. Will be interesting to see how we handle them. Hopefully QB pressure will be our saving grace causing errant throws and interception opportunities.

Study the game:

:uw: Vs :asu:

Washington won 15-7.

Arizona State held the vaunted Husky O to 9 points (the only Dog TD was a pick six INT by UW’s Defense…). Penix threw 2 INTs that game. UW also gave up 2 fumbles. UW was held to 13 yards of rushing. :yikes: Ariz State’s red zone defense held up, forcing 3 field goals. Press summaries state that Ariz State stuffed Washington’s rushing attack, and put pressure on Penix and UW’s receivers.

UW— 3 field goals, 1 defensive TD with conversion missed.

Ariz State —after this game their record was 1-6. So this was an otherwise sorry team that stuffed Washington’s offense.

THIS gives me hope Sark and Coach K will watch film of the AZ State game (and others) to come up with a really good game plan to attack both sides of the ball. In the end this could come down to ST and Auburn's foot.

I feel like this is the perfect match up. They waxed us in the bowl last year so our guys have something to prove. On the other hand Washington will come in too relaxed and cocky because last year was so easy.

Texas for the win!!

Agree and we got film on them from last years bowl game. What they did to us on certain formations / plays. That should help with the development of some of the strategy for this game. Also, as previously stated we had several key players not playing. This game we should have all hand or virtually all hands on deck.

Washington's defense doesn't cause me much concern. We should be able to score just fine.

Their passing game does cause me concern.

I hope we come out and mix up coverages and are able to get pressure on Penix. There is going to be overtime for Coach K this month.

Best part is that we saw it last year and we have 4 weeks to watch tape. For their part, I don’t think it’s possible to stop Texas if we execute on offense.

Well poop. I thought his only reason to not be on the field was due to injury, maybe not based on this. Otherwise I’m surprised about this one.

Thompson may have to carry the day for us back there. He and another S to step up on the big stage.

This sort of opportunity is why you come to UT gents!

Just a dumb *** play by Williams on a kick off into the end zone. I didn't think it was targeting, but certainly was a cheap shot that was going to get a personal foul. I didn't think it was a blind side per say, but more blowing someone up for no reason and the refs are going to call that.

Very accurate passers prefer to throw against a zone. The man coverage has increased and the UT defense has benefited. If we can pressure then go man. Manny Muhammad plays great Man. Hence the name. Go Man w Manny!

This is interesting. On one of the interceptions, ASU dropped one of the front 4 back, rushed 3, and confused Penix. On the other interception, ASU sent everyone but the kitchen sink. They're really mixing it up. The ASU DBs seem to mostly be using a moderate cushion on the UW WRs at the line. The ASU secondary is keeping it in front of them and not giving up the big play. Good tackling by the ASU secondary after the catches are made. Good-to very good open field tackling by ASU in general. They're not giving up the big play. They made UW work hard for every first down, every drive.

UW has some tackling issues on defense. The Dogs are prone to give up big yards on QB scrambles, and are easily confused by screen plays. UW shows a lot of team speed on defense. But when they get there, do they make the tackle? That's their problem. They're fast, but their tackling is suspect.

UW was very fortunate to come out of this game without a Loss. And ASU was just a 1-6 team.

Screens to Blue and passes to JWhitt and Sanders is what you just said.

If not for the pick 6 on a bad decision by the ASU qb, that game may have turned out differently.

What’s interesting is that Penix is coming into the game on a downward trajectory. Maybe defenses are figuring out Washington whereas there is no antidote to Texas.
