Gardiner is lower than I expected. They knocked HVL down a bit because "Her shooting percentage dropped this season at every level, but she has proven abilities that can work in the right system."

Her freshman season didn't count PERIOD. Whether she played all the games or 11 of them. I don't think she gets to take a Covid Year and another Medical Redshirt year.
I don't know how all that works... Ayoka Lee is coming back to Kansas State next year and she's played four seasons already, plus she's had two redshirt years (one freshman redshirt and one medical redshirt). She's been at KSU since the 2018-19 season.
:idk:

Furthermore, then explain how our own Shaylee Gonzalez had a college career that spanned 6 years and allowed her to play five seasons. She began her career at BYU in 2018- 19, red-shirted 2019-20, played 2020-21 and 2021-22. She then transferred to Texas and play the last two seasons. So something about your logic is not adding up.

2 redshirt years were 2018-19 and 2019-20. She played in 20-21. That year did not count against eligibility for any player. Gaston only received the Covid year because her injury year and the Covid year were one and the same. If the year she missed for injury were any other year, she would have two years left to play.

I'm trying to figure out this do not contact phrase. It sounds like these players are being contacted by teams before they even declare for the portal. It is like they already know where they are going before they declare. Are there NCAA rules against it, or is this a grey area. Also, are they being enticed with NIL money?

I have not kept up with the times. Why are so many players wanting to change programs every year? Are they looking for more playing time, a better chance at a title, better NIL deals, a coach they like better, more recognition? I really don't get it. It is so different from my old fashioned idea of going to a school you love, building relationships that mean a lot to you, forming a loyalty to your school and team. It seems like they are ever searching for something better. School itself doesn't seem to be much of consideration, since they clearly aren't driven to complete their degree program. Iriafen really surprised me. A Stanford education, a team of good players. It could be because Tara is retiring. There sure seem to be a lot of unhappy players out there. Staying around and trying to improve doesn't seem very compelling anymore.

In some cases, I’m sure some are being contacted before they enter (against the rules) but some may just not want their phones blown up by 50-100 coaches and/or want to have more control of the process.

NIL is definitely being used as a selling point. To combat that, coaches should just show some clips of HVL this past season looking miserable and not playing too well followed by Mulkey throwing shade at her today at a booster event.

Do tell. What did Mulkey do?

“Her aspirations were to get drafted this year,” Mulkey said. "And she realized, ‘I need another year and I need to go back to a place where I can relax and get back to my normal position.

“And what do you do? You hug her, and you wish her well.”

Van Lith's lone season in Baton Rouge was a challenging one for the 5-foot-7 guard, who became a women's college basketball sensation and star at Louisville her sophomore season when she averaged 19.7 points per game. She is now in the portal for the second time in her career, after transferring from Louisville to LSU prior to last season.

Not only did Van Lith have to learn a new system at LSU, but she had to learn an entire new position — become a true point guard instead of a shooting guard — from Mulkey, who was a star point guard herself during her playing days at Louisiana Tech University. Van Lith saw a drop in her production and scoring, as she averaged just 11.2 points per game this season while turning over the ball 85 times, the second-highest total in her career.

“She wanted to improve her strengths by coming to LSU with a goal of expanding her game by learning a position that I played my entire life,” Mulkey said. "Because she knows at the next level that's her only chance – to be able to tell them somewhat, ‘I can handle the ball if you need me to.’”

In the case of Iriafin, the change of coach might be a factor, but Stanford joining the the ACC might be another reason. Can you imagine doing 5-7 hour flights to and from away games? I think we may see more transfers from there.

Agreed. I think the unfortunate demise of the PAC-12 also factored into Tara's retirement.

That was actually brought up by Brink when she declared for the draft.

The fact you're comparing Shaylee's situation to Gaston's shows me you have no idea what you're talking about. I never said a player's career couldn't span 6 years, but what I did say was you can't get two years out of the Covid year which is your logic. It doesn't work that way.
