this tiger didn't go crazy

For our friend here who likened the tiger to "Jaws" for tracking the buddies down, may I suggest you pick up a book tiitled Death In The Long Grass by Peter Hathaway Capstick. You'd be wise not to underestimate the big cats.

Is this the book based upon that movie that came out 10 years ago with Val Kilmer (I think), about the lions that were tracking and killing people working on a train in africa or india?

The parents should sue and they should probably win. The wall being 3/4 of the recommended height is pretty damn negligent. Zoos are well aware that there are people out there that taunt animals at the zoo. The enclosures should be sufficient to contain an annoyed/pissed off animal. Unless the boys did something to actually physically help the Tiger get out, this is on the zoo.

I always root for the tiger in these deals.

There was a book out a few years ago about the Darwin Awards. Almost a whole chapter on different idiots who jumped the fence to hug a tiger or some **** and got ripped to pieces.

If the kids didnt **** with the tiger I stand corrected. Unfortunately there is a 100% chance they actually did.

Tigers are the most awesome animals on the earth in my opinion. This incident just reinforces that notion.

If these were 5 year olds, they would have my sympathy.

These were young men. If indeed they taunted the tiger to the degree it appears (with the caveat that all the facts are not yet in, so my present inclination is NOT my final judgement), including things like throwing things at the tiger, then I am inclined to say that these men are mostly victims of their own stupidity.

And yes, I have been stupid before -- hell, I have been stupid recently (remember, I like to go fishing -- lots of chances for mishaps there). I am aware that there is a statistically real chance that my final words will be "well ****, that was a bad idea." But the point is that the cause is my stupidity -- or in this case, theirs.

If this case breaks down as it currently appears -- the men taunted the hell out of an amazing predator, and the wall was lower than it should have been, then there is shared responsibility. I would apportion responsibility 51% on the victims, and 49% on the zoo. Maybe move those numbers a bit, but the majority of the responsiblity would remain with the victims. I will always blame the guy who tossed the match at a gas can more than I will the guy who left the lid off the gas can. One was negligent, the other was stupid. Stupid is worse than negligence, every time.

And here's a newsflash -- big time predators will **** your **** up in epic fashion. I don't **** with large sharks, big cats, or bears. Seems like a pretty obvious rule, but some folks still need to learn it, apparently.

If the facts are what they appear to be at present, the victims didn't "deserve" their fate -- but they bear the majority of the responsibility for it.

If they sue the zoo, i hope the judge throws it out. 12' or 16' wall does not matter. the cats had not jumped out prior to being taunted. a 17 year old should know better.

in this case, these idiots got what they deserved. they made a choice to play with their lives and one of them paid for it. it is not a tragedy. they made a CHOICE. It was his CHOICE to taunt this animal. they should take responsibility for their actions.

it's one thing to make faces at a chimp who will throw poop at you.

it's quite another to dangle limbs in front of a TIGER who might eat you.

there's youthful stupidity and there is just plain stupidity. this appears to be the latter.

and that tiger shouldn't have been there in the first place.

Kind of one a similiar subject....there is a gas station on I-20 in Louisiana called the Tiger stop. There you will find a actual Tiger enclosed in a 40 by 40 pen. I bet 1 out of every 5 people that see that Tiger take an opportunity to taunt it. It will actually attempt to attack, but it held back by the fencing. That thing is going to get out ONE of these days and F some "innocent" people up.

Only three of those examples are an animal escaping from it's pen without some human assistance, the two gorillas and the snow leopard. So out of the thousands of animal enclosures in American zoos, three animals have been able to escape in over five years. That hardly qualifies as 'all the damn time'.

Sounds like that kid was a hero, a bit tougher than any internet tough guys on this thread.
The Link

Police in California say the man killed by a tiger in a San Francisco zoo on Christmas Day may have died trying to save his friend's life.

Police say Carlos Sousa, 17, shouted in an attempt to distract the 300lb (136kg) tiger Tatiana as it clawed his friend Kulbir Dhaliwal.

The animal then killed Mr Sousa with a slash across his throat, allowing Kulbir and his brother Paul to escape.

i have a hard time believing the tiger simply decided to "get out." the tiger had been there for over a year. obviously something prompted the tiget to want to get out in a very big way.
