The Russians are Coming, The Russians are Coming

Since neither Sweden nor Finland are members of NATO it makes sense for Putin to threaten them
Yes they did well in winter war with Russia and then Germany. I hope we and other countries are sending on TONS of weaponry now.

First, the Germans have the Nazi Gestapo on them, then they got the Communist Stasi in E. Germany.

That would be an unwise move for Russia. Finland can hold its own. Terrain (thick forests) favors homeland defenders. Same with Sweden. These are two nations that have done well historically against Russia.

Going after Finland would threaten Russia's own sovereignty. Both countries have a firm agreement. Finland has promised and demonstrated strict neutrality. To invade Finland would be a brazen show of not respecting neutrality. Russia basically wants the same agreement with Ukraine that they have with Finland. Go back on that and it is game over for them.

I think Russia is using crazy strong rhetoric to try to get concessions. It's a bluff I think, but dang.

Anybody else aware that Russia welcomed in Harvard economists to privatize their economy in the 90s? Then those economists sabotaged the process to keep Russia an economic backwater? Russia has seen the US as an aggressor since the mid-90s, even though there was supposed alliances following 1991 disintegration of the USSR.

Anybody read about what George Kennan said was going to happen between US-Russia once NATO started admitting Eastern European countries in 1998?

He was prophetic. While Putin himself is responsible for his own actions over the last week. The US is also responsible for enacting foolish policy which was obviously going to lead to more conflict not less.

Kennan was the kind of person we used to have in leadership in the US. Intelligent, wise, measured, and loyal to America. We haven't had that for quite some time now. Conservativism is respecting the wisdom and excellence of previous generations. The build up to the new US-Russia conflict is not Conservative. It is Progressive and Neoliberal.

They ain't going down without a fight...

"Ukrainian missiles appear to have hit a Russian military base in Millerovo, a Russian town 16 kilometers from the border of the two countries, according to unconfirmed social media posts.

At least 137 Ukrainians have died, including civilians, and hundreds more have been injured as Russia continues its invasion. At least 800 Russian soldiers have also reportedly lost their lives."

Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelenskyy

Far more reasonable and understanding than anything Putin has said on the situation.

Shocked? About what? Nothing about the last couple of days has been remotely shocking - it was pretty well telegraphed.

Putin is now threating Finland and Sweden if we join NATO.

That's what he said to Ukraine, and then he ****** them anyway despite them not joining NATO. So Finland and Sweden have zero reason to trust him now.

Russia doesn't care about their own side of agreements. They have twice now blatantly flouted the Budapest Memorandum.

It is amazing that Ukrainians are fighting to the death for their country, from the 80 yr old to the current and former Presidents to all the military age men who chose NOT to flee but to turn and fight.

Contrast that to the way too many of Afghan military men who fled on OUR aircraft and are now getting taken care of here i USA with our taxpayer money

God bless Ukraine

There is an amazing thing happening in Europe and the rest of the world who do not want to be oppressed.
I wish I could say Americans would be at the front of people acted against Putin

The invasion of Ukraine by the Rooskey's is another foreign policy disaster skin on the wall of the Biden Presidency & Administration... there will be more negative skins on the wall before his first and last term is over.
Very True but the reasons this is a disaster are much bigger than you think!

Yeah, and the US hasn't lived up to their agreements either. That is hardly a balanced criticism. The balanced criticism is, don't be an idiot and mess up agreements that have worked out well.

Ukraine has a lot of pent up hatred for Russia based on what the Bolsheviks did to them in the 20s and 30s. They get a chance to take out a few even if it means they die. The people on the streets are valiant heroes. Zelensky and those in power are cowardly dogs.

This is interesting:

KYIV, Feb 24 (Reuters) - The Chernobyl nuclear power plant has been captured by Russian forces, an adviser to the Ukrainian presidential office, Mykhailo Podolyak, said on Thursday.

"It is impossible to say the Chernobyl nuclear power plant is safe after a totally pointless attack by the Russians," he said.

"This is one of the most serious threats in Europe today," Podolyak said.

Russian troops took over the power plant while Ukrainian forces battled them on three sides on Thursday.

Seems the Russian troops went straight to Chernobyl. Wonder why the Russians would want Chernobyl . . .

Hopefully, they are standing around warming their hands with the radiation.

People with nothing to lose are the toughest fighters. If they lose, they're dead or in Siberia.

Deez
I think the Ukrainians fighting because they have everything to lose and they are so far fighting pretty tough.
Wish they could hold on to their country

Seeing the women and children making molotiv cocktails is chilling.
When you are fighting with everything to lose you do what you must.
I wonder if the Squad or the Woke would do that here?

Yeah. I saw that now. At least he took some pictures and put them on social media. But I give him props for staying in Ukraine regardless of what he is actually doing.

Other than that he isn't deep-throating Vladimir Putin, what's your big complaint about him? And if you're going to go with "corruption," then what's your big complaint about him that one couldn't reasonably make about Vladimir Putin?

My main complaint is that he acted in concert with US neocons that set up the context over the last couple of years. However, Russia is responsible for the invasion and the horrors it causes. Once Russia attacked, Zelensky has been doing the right thing for Ukraine, he is trying to kick out a foreign aggressor.
