Texas WBB 2024-2025 Season

Tory Teykl, new Director of Operations for WBB is the Aunt, but is the USC reference a re-do of last year's closed door scrimmage?

Yeah, I saw that's who she is. USC must have been who we scrimmaged today.

It makes me scratch my head that these two teams will go through the travel expenses of scheduling closed scrimmages against each other 2 seasons in a row, but can't find a date to schedule each other in an actual non-conference game which TV would gobble up and provide both programs great exposure and help their strength of schedule.

It's a tad bit cowardly that many top teams don't want to risk an official early season loss to a defense they'll never see again all year.

UCONN didn't seem to mind the last two seasons. Geno sees the upside of preparing his team for March, in addition to the points you raise.

Wow, I never pay attention to the comings and going at the level of operations for most sports. Tekyl's name is familiar to me as she "came in" with Tom Herman.

Looks like she replaced Christy Smith. And since I couldn't pick Smith out of a crowd, essentially nothing has changed - except I remember Teykl's name.

At the dinner, Vic was disappointed in how we played Sunday in Ft. Worth vs USC. Got to the line 32 times, which was good, but missed 14 FTs, which he implied was a big difference in the game.

USC pressed a lot and that apparently was another factor in our play.

Apparently, one of the officials was one that Vic has never gotten along with.

Having weaknesses exposed early in a scrimmage is a good thing.

Thanks for sharing. Obviously, I don't know the context of his comments. But, it's odd for him to mention that "USC pressed" as our team does the same thing and he constantly tells us that is the reason non-conference opponents don't want to schedule his teams. As they say, "teams who press hate to be pressed"

As for the officials in a close scrimmage, I would have thought both head coaches would agree to the officiating crew. Perhaps there were multiple scrimmages in Fort Worth that day.

It is interesting that USC pressed the Horns. Rarely does that happen due to Rory. I do remember Ohio State pressing during the tournament and as I remember it, it caused problems. There have been a few other instances but I can’t remember em. Just guessing but those problems might be temporary as Harmon would most likely not have played too much. With new guards that uncomfortableness is understandable. I feel confident that won’t be an issue later. However, USC might have been given a model how to play Texas if they meet up in the tournament.

Exactly. Vic mentioned that it was unrealistic to ask Rori in her first full-speed game back to shoulder the entire press attack load. Several players learned that they need to up their press attack game.

Exactly.

I agree... I'm thinking Rori and possibly A-Mo didn't play much, if at all, in the scrimmage. I don't worry about our ability to attack an opponent's press with a healthy Rori... and with Booker and Phelia to help. Things are way different in our back court than they have been the past couple of seasons. Eventually the freshman guards will come along also. They've probably got plenty of film from that scrimmage to learn from.

Most disturbing is the free throw percentage. There’s nothing that causes my blood pressure to elevate to unsafe levels than to watch routine clanking of free throws. Maddening. Leads to mentally unhealthy visions. Surely we don’t have to live through a year of that. Hire a free throw guru please. Or just shoot em better.

Forgot to mention that on two occasions Vic expressed how pleased he was with his deep guard roster for the first time at Texas.

Especially praised Bryanna and what she brings with her speed and ball handling. He has said this before; there never was going to be a tryout for PG after Rori went down. It had to be Madi because she had the next best handle on the team. That's what Bryanna brings.

He mentioned earlier that Preston was “Rory on Steroids.” Ballhandling was a weakness last year. Booker did ok with her size and strength and skills but quick guards were a nuisance. Gonzalez was also ok but the quick guards also presented issues. Harmon and Preston should help Schaefer sleep better at night on the ball handling. I’m interested in watching to see if Preston has the potential to “run the team”. Speed and ball handling are baseline, and running the team and making good decisions is huge. Sure wish could have seen Preston’s efforts against USC. But alas…..

I'm surprised that Vic said he was disappointed. - with it being the first scrimmage, trying to build chemistry, making the leap from high school to college, learning Vic's system, and all. However, I absolutely agree with others here that missing free throws gets my goat!

In a previous presser, Vic mentioned how Preston pushed the ball so well with her speed and athleticism, but that he was most pleased with her ability to always make the right decision at the right time with the ball. Once she learns all the plays for all positions, I think we're in good shape at the point.
