Texas WBB 2024-2025 Season

I’m lazy. Too much to look for video or comments. Is Preston left-handed? Can she use both hands? Seems like she’s lefty and kinda that hand-dominant. Or not.

Offense: The standard "weave" with attempts to pull and short and shoot it or kick it out to the wing for a 3. Nothing new.

Defense: In the first 4 minutes, I thought that something was wrong. The team was playing light press, just getting near players on the inbound, but not really that close to them. Again, I believe it was trying to not injury Rori or A-Mo before the season began. The teams were trading points back and forth, with the lead changing a few times by the time Texas led 12-8. And then, suddenly, a switch was flipped and the players, a mixture of first and subs (Rori was already out by then) were suddenly inches closer to the UTT player. UTT made the score 12-10 and then the lock down defense started. During this time, Jak blocked a shot, they caused a shot clock violation and they caused a turnover because UTT couldn't inbound the ball in time. I looked up and it was 29-10. By the time I left, Jak had blocked 2 shots, there were two shot clock violations and two turnovers because of inbound pressure. I was mainly surprised that the freshmen could play so tight coverage so quickly without fouling. And they're young, so they've got the energy to spare.

She is not left-handed... She just finishes well that way.

Defense extra: Forgot to say, both veterans and rookies kept leaving the left side of the half-court where 3's are launched unguarded. That hasn't improved.

That drives me crazy! If it's how I imagine, the defense plays help defense (sagging into the paint) and is totally out of position if the ball is thrown to the 3 point shooter on the side of the court.

Well then, what is the solution? I think this is just the result of tactics being employed.

If we agree that the laws of physics proscribe that we can not be two places at once, what we are seeing is a reflection of coaching instructions that we play help defense at the expense of a potential open 3 -- or vice-versa. These tactics are often reversed to match offensive personnel and/or to keep the offense guessing.

Please explain if I am missing something.

The film won’t lie. Bet if we break down each instance we see the above, mostly drive and kick by Tyler guards, with a UT help defender sagging off a Tyler 3 point shooter. No replay of this game so we are left guessing, likely have a Nov 10 game replay to sort out any lapse in defense.

I forgot. Stats as I was leaving at halftime

DMNews had a lot of good information in Sunday’s Girls Basketball Season Preview. Of most interest is Jaci Abi has transferred to Legion Prep Academy from Frisco Liberty for her senior year. She’s recovering from ACL knee surgery but no information on progress. Just a scant mention of Chavez as it relates to new playoff format and potentially meeting up with her team. And thank goodness no mention of Faith Family’s 18 transfers and their suspension for 2 years. I realize most on here can’t see cause its subscription but might have a workaround.

Abi is only entering her junior season, unless she's somehow jumped forward a grade.

Yup. Seems like Abi has been playing high school ball forever. As she has had so much early success. So she has plenty of time to take her recovery slow. Her recruitment will still be heavy for 2026.

She's REALLY good... a very special talent. Word has it that Dawn Staley has followed her every move since early on.

Abi has been heart and soul of Frisco Liberty state 5A champions. I’m watching to see if Liberty can recover without her. Without rereading posts, Schaefer has been active in recruiting her. Horns will have a need in 2026 for players such as Abi. She’d look good in burnt orange.

Yes, I remember her being offered at a young age from our staff.

Aliyah Matharu will transfer to Baylor after the Fall semester. I'm still not convinced she'll be eligible immediately, but I guess we'll find out.

Is that political commercial on TV with woman "Kate Cox" the same Kate Cox that played for Baylor?

I am excited that today is the first official day of the season; but, bummed that we don't play until 6 days later. Lots of early (before noon) games today, including the games in Paris.

The USC vs Mississippi game is on ESPN at 11 am. Would like to watch but babysitting grandsons today. It’s not worth recording and watching later. Someone summarize it here later. At least we have Texas vs Ohio State tonight. Sad that the men actually start the season where they are ALWAYS a week later than women. Oh well.

DeYona Gaston 36 pts and 11 rebounds in Auburn's win tonight.
Her play was unrecognizable.
Oh..no blown shots at the rim as was her tendency here.
Oh well.

Yep, it seemed that DeYona could never get going last year. Now, she, Hadi and Amina are doing well at their new respective schools.

Good for De… but it was against VA-Lynchburg in a 90 point blowout where Auburn scored 128. We’ll see Dee in person Jan 16. Mixed emotions about that.

I have to think that most of the players transferred out of Texas in search of more playing time. so, I guess when the season is further along, I'm going to look at their overall season stats to see if they're one of the top-6 players in terms of playing time on their new team. At least I hope that's not the case and that they hated their time on the Texas team.

Agreed. I can't blame them for wanting bigger roles as their reasons for transferring. I also can't blame our coaching staff for going with players that led us to three Elite 8 appearances in four years with rosters limited in skills (speaking in terms of depth).

We have all seen Vic speak about the goal of living in the top 10 teams, and the work it takes to pay the rent there. It is such an exciting time in women's basketball right now with all the dynamic players, and the articles highlighting those women include Horns in the mix, always with Booker and often Rori as well. I am so excited to see these women get their season launched today because Vic has truly guided this program back to the top, and I think these ladies certainly have a chance to be there at the end. Time to sit back and enjoy (sweat, cheer, scream, leap, clap) the ride for another year. Horns Up! This Horns Fan is ready to give them all I got!! LFG!
