TEXAS VS WASHINGTON- GAME THREAD

He is a good QB but will never be a great one.He still cannot throw the deep ball with accuracy. He is too fragile to make it through a year of college ball muchless the NFL.

I saw that two people disagreed with you but I agree. He is a roller coaster player. When things are going well he's on, when things are not he goes to the bench, sits by himself and stares off into the abyss and has nothing to do with the rest of the offense on the sidelines. His emotions are too fragile and it shows. He doesn't have "it".

Also, I have grown to like Quinn Ewers a lot. I had a bias against him due to the decommit etc and then it took a long time for me trust him after the historical bad games he had last year against OSU and TCU.
But the kid worked hard and improved a lot this season. Damn near took us to a national championship! Just one play away. Just let that sit for a minute before you bash the guy.
We need him next season, badly. Regardless of how ready you think Manning is (he's not BTW - he has yet to "see the elephant". QE now has.)
We ran into a rolling ball of butcher knives last night. QE had some rough games this season but also showed he has some mettle even in this losing effort.
The whole team should be better for it, as they know what championship level football looks like now (if they didn't already).

He was probably wondering what happened to my OL and why the RB’s put two balls on the ground. He might have had some curiosity about the play calling too.

Thanks for the perfect examples, when things get tough he disengages from the team. That's not a leader.

He is a roller coaster player but I put a lot of that on Sark.
Sark can script some fantastic games. But when the defense has it game planned well or they are getting pressure, Sark has a hard time adjusting and it's ugly.
And QE is not that great of an improviser.
So if I am going to give Sark the credit for QEs struggles it's only fair to say QE is more of a bus driver at this point in his career.
That said, he's a damn good one that nearly got us to the championship game. I'll roll with QE every day.

Plenty of great takes, as usual. A few more:

Penix was great, but we provided “almost no pass rush,” and “no resistance” in the secondary. Our weaknesses were exposed. We knew that both were liabilities, and with a month to prepare, we were unable to affect either dynamic.

Any comparison of Ewers to Penix seems unfair. One QB was in Year 6. The other, Year 2. One had protection and the other, not so much. Additionally, their defensive scheme was better than ours. Better on the back end.

I do believe that Ewers played well. No ints. Relatively poor protection. Little separation by his receivers. And, he ran well. I’d probably give him an A-.

While the running game was effective, the fumbles were killers. Neither were the result of good defensive plays. Without those two unforced errors, last night would probably have been different. Like a few have said, having J. Brooks would have made a difference.

Yes, great season. But this one stings, and will for a while. That’s because we were given a huge gift at the end of the game, and we couldn’t take advantage.

After not sleeping a wink on it, I change my mind and think Michigan will actually be able to bring heat on Penix and they will run for 300 plus. I hope I’m wrong.

This one is going to sting differently for a bit. We got outplayed and coached for much of the game and were always trying to just stay in contact with UW. Had to make hay out of some of the stops and the fumbles really were the thing that did us in, because they could not stop our run. Pennix went nuclear. No way around it. And we just don't have the playmakers in the back end to deal with a 1st rounder on a heater. Even when we had good coverage, balls just went in only place they could and they were on shots too. The Polk tip and score kind of indicated what night it was.

Even with all that, still had a shot. I really thought we had a 75% chance to win the game, even on the 4th down play.

We missed Brooks. Bad. Might have been a going away win with him

I’ve not read all the opinions or arguments on here, but I will line up about here. I’ll say, first, we really are one of the best four teams. Next, last night, Ewers was our best player. Under complete pressure all the time, he did not throw interceptions, allow strip sacks, take grounding penalties or delay of games or anything like that. On a night when who? on our team was playing at his best—Worthy? Sanders? Mitchell? The RBs? The DLine? The DBs? OL? penalty situation?—only Ewers was basically mistake free. Yet he is throwing passes into the end zone at the end to somehow win anyway and go to the championship game. So, better than a bus driver.

This. Our two unforced errors outweighed their one.

Unable to put pressure on Penix, penalties, turnovers, Ewers unable to adjust to tipped passes (4 I think), not utilizing Worthy and AD until the 4th…. Disastrous recipe, that makes. Washington clearly out played us. Bummer.

If you can find it, rewatch the 6A championship game Ewers v. Klubnic (?). The same Ewers showed up versus ou in October and last night. Herman chased the wrong QB. The right one lead a comeback for the Sons of Klem last week.

Quinn was playing hurt that game.
Lots of Clemson posters are blaming Klubnik for their lousy season. So there's that.

Penix was lights out. Our secondary has been our weakness all year. However, we are better than them in other areas.

Any of the 4 teams in the playoffs could have won it all. Both games came down to the wire in the end. Both Bama and Texas were a frog’s hair from winning yesterday.
If Penix is this accurate against Michigan, Michigan gets blown out. If Penix isn’t for whatever reasons, pressure, dropped passes, inaccurate, then Michigan wins going away.

These are the problems you face when you are in the elite mix. We better get used to it.

Ewers was 1 second away from putting his Texas Longhorns into the national championship game. Quite the accomplishment after being at the helm for less than 2 seasons.
Same with Sark getting us to this point in year 3!!

The team earned some stripes last night.

Quinn can frustrate me and impress me in the same game more than any other player ever.

And F the downer trolls who showed up and made douche canoes of themselves.
It’s interesting the passel is mostly non-sponsors, from what I’ve noticed, who roll in here on game days crying…weird. But then again there are also small few super fanboys that get upset if you’re critical of anything at all. Easy to ignore but noticeable. Oh well, that’s sports.

It was a great season and we exceeded expectations. Again I will say "we exceeded expectations". We can build on this and reach the promise land.

I think Michigan's run game will wear down Washington.
I think Washington's pass game will wear down Michigan.
It will be interesting to see who wins.

Seems to me from some of the comments I've read that a few people are dumping on Ewers. I personally thought his play is what kept us in the game. His scrambles turned losses or no gains into big plays setting us up for scores. He wasn't as good as Penix but, Holy Cow, that dude was darn near perfection last night. Im extremely disappointed that we lost, disappointed in the penalties and even more disappointed that we didn't play anything close to our best game. But UW would have beat some previous Texas teams by 30 points. This team never quit. Are we BACK? I don't know. Every year is a different story. Hopefully the foundation is solid and next year we are even better.

I'd rather face these problems than those associated with 7-6 to 8-5 seasons, even if defeat does sting a bit more.
Totally agree on this. I had to quit watching at half or I may have had an aneurism so I missed the 4th qtr which appears to have been good. I simply cannot stand the 15 yard cushion our dbs give nor can I understand why. Penix is a phenomenally accurate passer and yes he had time but for goodness sake, at least man up and put pressure on them to get off the line. Get a bully mentality and if we get beat, how could it be worse than giving that kind of cushion & still look like we were grasping at air. Super happy with the team this year and the direction, but like most of you very disappointed in this outcome. Oh well, 8 more months and we can start over again. Great year to be a Longhorn!!!

I can appreciate all opinions on this board, but I do not understand the focus on Ewers when while he was playing well running backs fumbled, receivers missed some balls, the secondary was burned all night, Sark made some questionable calls, the defense failed to pressure the opposing quarterback while UW pressured the Texas quarterback most of the night, the "O" line caused dumb mental penalties and the officials missed calls on the other team.

Let's put Ewers in the Portal and see if any other coach wants to take a look. He is a damn good college quarterback and will only get better next year. And Texas needs him.
