Texas v. Aggy March 29, 2022

Texas hosts aggy in one of the last non-conference tilts with our "friends" from College Station as we will start getting weekend series with them hopefully as early as 2024. Game is at 6:30 on LHN and has been sold out since before the season began so the Disch will be rocking. Expect Eckhardt to start for the Horns. Aggy just lost a home series to Auburn and is 14-9 on the year. Aggy won last year 2-0 and has a two game win streak going against the Horns, which ironically enough is exactly how many wins aggy has in Omaha all time.

Austin, TX 10-Day Weather Forecast - The Weather Channel | Weather.com

Austin, TX
Tue 29 | Night
62°
Chance of Rain 98%
Winds from the South at 19 mph
Partly cloudy skies early. ........Thunderstorms likely late. Potential for severe thunderstorms. Low 62F. Winds S at 15 to 25 mph. Chance of rain 100%

Will rain later in the evening -- might want to bump the start up to 5 or 5:30???

Winds 15-25 from the South = power hitters dinging it over the left field wall. (a good night to "live low in the zone"...)

The ags are without their usual mid-week starter, Curtis, who is out with an injury. No other pitcher has started a mid-week game for the ags (and they have only played 1 mid-week game per week).

This past weekend, they started: Detmer, Dallas, Prager (Prager only went for 2 innings)

This past weekend, in relief, they used:
Palisch - 3.2 innings
Hector - 3 innings
Rudis - 2 innings
Zander - 2 innings
Johnston - 2 innings
Cortez - 1 inning
Menefee - 1 inning
Magers - 0.2 innings
Lovett - 0.1 innings

There is no projected starter listed as of this morning. So we may see Prager (who only went 2 innings) and/or a strung together grab-bag of relievers. I'll highlight some of the pitchers we are most likely to see later. Palisch, Rudis, Hector, Cortez, Zander are some possibilities--each likely to throw 2 innings or less.

RYAN PRAGER

6'3" 185 lbs
LHP
4.39 ERA
1.03 WHIP
27 Strikeouts
7 Walks

Throws fastball in the mid 90s. Fastball "doesn't have a ton of life", but with his height and arm length, he creates a steep downhill plane. Decent slider, and uses his change-up as well. His SO/Walk ratio looks pretty good this year, but scouts, while interested, weren't sold on his control. Was the #4 high school LHP.

Ryan Prager is athletic enough to throw strikes but will need to refine his command to succeed against more advanced hitters. Ryan Prager is a 6'2" lefty that throws over 90 mph. He is also one of the top high school baseball prospects in North Texas.

Both LSU and Auburn drilled him for lots of runs. All in all, it appears this kid has a lot of promise--the pro scouts have been all over him--but he isn't quite there yet.

Houston drilled him. Pitched 3 innings against Auburn. We may see him for an inning or two. Throws fastball in the low 90s. Works a slider and a change-up. Was known as much in high school for his bat as for pitching. His dad was his high school baseball coach in Anna, TX. Likes to go up high and fast for the strikeout.

6'2 180lb RHP out of Van Alstyne, TX, Wiry arm up to 91, gets on hitters quick. CH is very effective with a ton of fade to RHH.

BRAD RUDIS
6'0" 195 lbs
RHP
3.75 ERA
1.50 WHIP
10 Strikeouts
6 Walks

Throws fastball up to the low 90s. Decent curveball.

6-foot, 170-pound frame with strength throughout. Working from a high-¾ slot, with a long, loose arm stroke and polished delivery, all three pitches come out of the same window. His fastball has good arm side run... Shows great feel for a 10/4 breaking ball with tight spin and good depth at 71-74 mph. Changeup was 73-76 mph.

JACOB PALISCH
6'4" 215 lbs
LHP
5.60 ERA
1.28 WHIP
19 Strikeouts
4 Walks

This guy's not bad at all; most of his 2022 numbers are so-so, but this guy is pretty good. Grad transfer from Stanford, where he made the all-PAC honorable mention team. Fastball in the high 80s to low 90s. Good change up. Crafty pitcher. In 2021, he pitched in two games at the College World Series for Stanford, allowing one run on five hits in 4.1 innings for one save and a 2.08 ERA...

Jacob Palisch is a 2017 LHP/1B, OF with a 6-5 185 lb. frame from Richardson, TX who attends Jesuit College Prep. Palisch has a long lean frame with plus projection. Full hands over head wind up, leg lift to above belt, starts delivery on line and finishes with a slightly crossed body delivery. Has high 3/4 arm slot with a clean arm action, a little short for size but works for him. Has good arm speed and gets thru release point well. Change up shows good fading life and dives below knees, looks comfortable throwing it vs both right hand and left hand hitters. Slider shows potential with good tilt and break. Shows command to gloveside well, with fastball. Outstanding Student. Named to the Top Prospect List and Team at the South Underclass Showcase.

Palisch (0.77 ERA/0.83 WHIP/.188 BAA) was one of the more entertaining lefties to watch on the Cape this summer, striking out 38 while walking just five in his six starts (including two seven-inning shutouts) and 36 innings. His fastball grades out as average, sitting in the 88-91 mph velo band with good life, while his changeup and slider both sit in the low-80s. He turns over his off-speed well, producing solid arm-side fade, and his slider comes with short, sharp action that mirrors the fastball and changeup well. The high-waisted southpaw worked aggressively in the zone, often pitching off his slider early in the count to steal strikes and draw soft contact. Palisch looks the part of an early Day Two talent at present and projects as a potential back-end arm with average-or-better offerings and enough feel to work the entirety of his repertoire through any counts, both in and out of the zone. (Faleris)

A Strake Jesuit guy.

CHRIS CORTEZ
6'1" 190 lbs
RHP
3.77 ERA
1.21 WHIP
12 Strikeouts
3 Walks

Here's the heat-thrower. Cortez throws his fastball in the mid-to-high 90s. Aggressive, comes right at hitters, challenges batters with his fastball. (if only Ivan and Trey read these boards...) A Las Vegas guy who had originally committed to the U. of Arizona, before the aggies convinced him what an incredible opportunity he was missing out on in Bryan/College Station for 4 years. Hard breaking ball. Solid changeup. Scouts say he may have some command and control issues, but he's only given up 3 walks thus far this year.

Chris Cortez, sit at 6-foot-1, 195 pounds with impressive, present strength and twitch that his is still understanding how to utilize. has cemented himself as one of the best arms in state with a fastball that sits in the 94 to 96 mph [[in high school] with high level arm speed. His breaking ball showed serious life with 11/5 shape and sign are pointing towards it being a potential plus pitch along with a changeup that is still in the development phase, but flashed projectable arm side action with heaviness. Consistency being able to locate is one of the very few knocks on Cortez as he relies heavily on athleticism, evident by his 6.67 Laser Timed 60, at this point with his delivery and with some polish to make a few minor tweaks could make his motion that much more repeatable, in turn allowing him to live in the zone on a regular basis. Cortez stock has been on then rise over the past year and it would not be a surprise to see a team take a chance on this arm who seems to only be scratching the surface.

Sounds like a guy who can throw a really fast fastball. His control...??? Still, when you've got a guy throwing in the upper 90s, he's a dangerous strikeout threat coming out of the bullpen with their team in a tight spot. Probably has the most long-term upside potential of any ag pitcher.

18 Strikeouts

I'm going to keep this one short, as I try not to be too negative on the pitchers (even opposing pitchers) who keep this great game alive. To say he's hittable might be a bit of an understatement. Shelled hard by Wichita State, Penn, and Auburn. There are also some control issues. Has hit 4 batters this year. Threw a costly wild pitch against Penn (3 wild pitches on the year). Throws in the mid-90s, hurling into the upper 90s on occasion, so he can bring some heat--he's got that going for him.:fire::fire::fire::fire::fire::fire: Also works a curve and a changeup for a 3 pitch offering. Prone to give up the occasional big inning...

And there's the grab-bag of relievers (+ starter Prager, who was used sparingly last weekend) that the ags will likely pull from to somehow string together 9 innings for tonight's game.

If I was them (and fortunately for me I'm not), I'd probably ride Prager and Palisch for as long, and as far, as they would take the ags tonight. Prager's 1.03 WHIP is very good, and Palisch's 1.28 WHIP is respectable. Also, Palisch made all-PAC 12 (hon. mention) last year. In addition, if Cortez is on (a big "if"), he could mow down a lot of batters with strikeouts throwing his stuff in the upper 90s and mixing it with the breaker and change-up.

The ags are way outclassed when it comes to pitching depth, but Prager + Palisch + Cortez could make it interesting. Those 3 aren't bad. Baseball can be a cruel game, and strange things do happen...

Years ago someone posted that on texags and the indignation was glorious. Their resident tough guy at the time, 13-0 Branding Iron, even challenged the poster to a fistfight in Houston. I got the first of my many bans by replying something like 'BI, did you mean you wanted a fisting in Montrose?'

Fielders choice to home plate for the force out. Then another aggie error scores a run

2-2 tie game.
