Texas v. Aggy March 29, 2022

Well, Gordon was supposed to be our #4 pitcher—the guy to shut down upstarts and pretenders. But alas, we now need him for #3, and we have nobody who has proven himself worthy of being a mid-week starter.

One of these guys like Morehouse, Eckhardt, or Cobb will have to step up and claim the spot through sustained good performance. (this REALLY NEEDS TO HAPPEN)

Our 1st loss at home and it had to be at the hands of the dang aggies. The 2 losses at tech were bad but at least it was at lubbock. This is, for me, the worst loss of the year and i hope its the bottom. Who would have thought earlier this year when we gave up 1 run total in a 3-game series against AL that we could put up 9 runs at home and lose by 3? I am at a loss to understand how the entire pitching staff can go to shiite all together like this. I am depressed.

Lately, the bats have been great. It’s the arms. Gotta snap out of the pitching slump and start getting the outs.

And reluctantly, credit to Rock, who hit for the cycle for the opposition. You don’t get to see that very often in this game. Too bad it was against us.

Rock's grand slam should have never happened, he struck out looking on 0-2 count but the ump never saw it. Completely different game if the ump gets it right. Then go look at the call against Campbell that ended the game. Garbage.

The good news is every year they beat us we go to Omaha and they don't. Expect that to continue.

IMHO, it looked like Eckhardt was way too pumped up out there. He looked like he was about to hyper-ventilate. It's not like football where you want everybody to be super fired up. Pitchers need to be on more of an even keel emotionally (easier said than done, of course...). They have to concentrate, be as rational as possible, and not let things get to them (also easier said than done...). Bring in the athletic program psychologist or something and calm these pitchers' nerves a bit.

Orrrrrr.......Maybe that backup catcher who was drinking from a flask at a game should share some with the pitchers. :beertoast:

Crazy idea but how about a competent pitching coach? Just think about the number of walks we continue to have and the harm it does. Pitch the frikn ball over the plate and let the defense field it as opposed to giving up a walk. Again, piching coach??

I think Allen is a very good pitching coach. Most folks agree. After last year, the fear was that he would get poached by another team to be their head coach.

D1 Baseball named Sean Allen as the Assistant Coach of the Year last year.

Of course, attempting to paint the corners isn’t the same thing as actually/successfully painting the corners.

Hanging meat over the center of the plate “right down Broadway” against a competent batter often leads to home runs, including the grand slams we have suffered.

It can be a cruel game of centimeters.

All 3 of our starters—Hansen, Stevens, and Gordon specialize in painting the corners, movement, and trickery. Southard is our 98 mph + guy, as is Nixon (who also brings a wicked slider to the mound).

In my elder state I have learned the hard way not to take the phrase "what most people believe" to mean what it used to. Most people thought Mueller was a great prosecutor and we saw that he couldnt form a coherent sentence. We saw "most people" believe shaka was a great coach and we saw what that brought us. Results matter and right now our pitching is awful. Yes we got to the CWS and that was great. We were in no danger of winning again because of not enough strong pitching and not enough hitting. I couldnt believe our strongest hitter in years was attempting a bunt in the first inning last night. Coaching matters and we have very poor decisions made by our staff.

Results certainly do matter. National Runner-up. We didn't just get to Omaha, we were within a few outs of winning the whole thing against an exceptional Miss State team.

Sean Allen, the returning NATIONAL ASSISTANT COACH OF THE YEAR didn't roll out of bed one day and suddenly become an idiot.

"...not enough hitting"?????? <--- better rethink that one... The bats have kept us alive through the pitching slump. We have scored 221 runs in 27 games for 8.18 runs per game: not too shabby, I'd say... (seeing as how results matter)

To those who say 'our bullpen needs improvement', no argument from me on that point. Same with 'we need to find a reliable 4th starter', yep, we sure do. But to cast aspersion overall on this very good team is folly. We're good, and it's a long season. Conference play just started. The sky is not falling. The next two conference series really matter and will tell us a lot.

I hope it doesn't turn out this way, but one possibilty is that we perform quite well on weekends, then stink up the joint on weekdays (that is, if we don't nail down a reliable 4th starter). As for our #3, it seems that some people just can't bring themselves around to liking Gordon, but as I've been saying, while he doesn't light up the radar gun, he's a smart, crafty, and capable starter and a good one.

I get it that you like him but I used to watch LCU light up D1 programs with Frank Anderson as the pitching coach. Then he went to Texas Tech and they did the same thing. Then he went to Texas and did the same thing. Now he is at Tennessee and if you look at the D1 pitching Stats, Tennessee has 2 pitchers in the top 20. Guess which program located in Austin with the D1 assistant of the year is not represented in that list. You got it. Good for our guy that got some votes but so far this year his results have sucked. Maybe he will turn it around but will he equal Frank Anderson, happy to take a bet on that based on PERFORMANCE. Hated when we lost him to ok state but understand the desire to run your own program. Didnt work out but he is still hands down the premier pitching coach in America and we would be light years better if he were back. We won the CWS in 2002 and 2005 because of him.

Its interesting that our old pitching coach with Augie is now the OU head coach. Just comparing his pitching results to ours this weekend, they consistently had more strike outs than we do. Yes we took 2 out of 3 but we also have much better talent and should win them. I understand some of you like our pitching coach but he just isnt getting the job done this year. We have tremendous recruiting classes so the on field performance should be exceptional. Maybe they improve as the year goes on but seems like the improvement needs to happen before the season, not OJT.
