Texas-TCU Game Thread

Reporter: Has anything happened in the last month that’s shaken your faith in Todd Orlando.
TH: No. No.
Reporter: Feel good about the strategy and what’s going on schematically?
TH: No.
Reporter: No you don’t, or no you don’t have a problem?
TH: No I don’t feel good about it, but the two are not related...the two questions, I believe.

I know some will disagree but I would dump Beck

Absolutely!

Beck’s boys make too many mistakes and the play selection sucks way too often.

Very true!

I will admit that I do not like the guy,

Welcome to a large and growing club.

He is the offensive coordinator.

True...his O scheme is generally offensive to a lot of people.

He is the offensive coordinator. Captain of the ship, a sinking ship. There is another guy on board.

Maybe. TH could take over. But we may see more of the same. and the ship probably sinks anyway

Ive heard many people since TH was hired say he is arrogant but I did not see it that way. Maybe I just didnt want to because he was my #1 choice. On weds on the call in show he said, when asked about running one more play to set up the winning fg, "we have a lot of highly paid coaches who did not think twice about it so i dont see what the big deal is.".

Wow. So all the fans and sportswriters who questioned that are all too stupid to see how great you and your highly paid coaches are. How you feelin about those highly paid coaches now?

Hes turned into thin-skinned MB already. Between that comment and todays crap show, ive got one foot off the bandwagon. You dont ever denigrate the fans. Ever. Without them you got nothing.

Yes I was thinking CCG. Trying to be positive. Thought the team would respond and coaches would change our base defensive scheme. But no, it was 3-3-5 almost the whole game! :idk:

I think it is now reasonable to question whether or not Herman is the caliber of coach many of us had thought, including me. For three weeks running his team has been the less physical. And for three weeks running he has been outcoached. Both coordinators have been exposed.

We’re at a crossroads in my judgment. The momentum we though we had been built seems to be crumbling. Yes, I do think it’s that serious. Add to the on-field troubles all the rumors and decommits, and I think it is reasonable for CDC to be very concerned.

For the first time since he was hired, I really don’t know if TH can turn this around. A good start would be to immediately find some humility, and dispense with the rah rah “we love each other” crap.

Phil, TH has always been thin skinned dating back to at least his Houston days and the infamous and very contentious interview he had with two sportscasters there.

Ehlinger was interviewed by Alex Loeb and asked what, as the leader fo the team, he tells the team.

Paraphrasing: We can either come together or split.

Kind of says it all that it would be on the table from his mouth that the team splitting is a possibility.

When the season began, I posted we would have a 10-2 or 9-3 season. The last two weeks performances (a last second escape at home vs the conference cellar-dweller and a loss on the road to a lesser team) are enough for me to change my opinion. If Beck is still calling plays, he needs to go. Orlan_o's D is awful, injuries of not. TH needs to make changes and get the top guys in the coordinator spots. It's his job, so he can do as he likes. If this continues and he won't make changes, he will be on the hotseat for sure next year. Another season of subpar performances might earn him the boot to the butt.

Watching TT v Mighty Ks and it’s 17 -0 TT. How in the heck can the Kansas about hit every throw against us? He just hit a big on but as I said was a bit under thrown or would have been as easy TD. Receiver did score but had to come back on the ball and elude defenders. Just saying he was lights out on those throws against us. Kinda like that Heisman qb we faced today.

The kid speaks the truth. Good for him. It beats the Spin City that usually comes from his HC.

But what would you expect the team leader to say after that performance following last week? I would think something to the tune of we come together now or its next man up, is on everyone’s mind.

I have always been against hiring an up and comer. I have said it since Strong was hired. Texas is a program that doesn’t need to speculate on the next up and comer. Texas needs to hire an established coach at a winning program. That was my problem with Strong and is my problem with Herman. The fact that Herman thinks he is smarter than everyone just makes it that much more distasteful. As I said since Strong, the fact that Texas doesn’t pay the best coach out there $15 million or something is just bad business. A winning Texas program is a license to print money.

CdC is going to have to be the adult in the room and end this mess now. The team was scared against ou, and that loss lead to an embarrassing performance against Kansas. Now a total meltdown to a team that is basically not very good is a potential program killer that Herman cannot correct on his own.

I am sure that when classes started this semester CdC thought his HC issue was limited to basketball and baseball (talking about a program that crashed mid-season). No one wants Urban Myth anywhere near the program, but the list of proven successful Power 5 coaches is quite small so who are you going to throw money at? $150 million to Dabo for 10 years?

My concern, as I have expressed ad nauseam, is as you stated:

“The fact that Herman thinks he is smarter than everyone...”

Herman is not perfect but he has the skill set to be a great coach. He is now being tested probably unlike at any other time in his career. All we can do is hope that he learns and grows from the current adversity.

Exactly! Since we are an elite program, we should hire the best out there away from another top P5 and not lower tier programs. No more of this experimental thought hoping they work out. Go get the damn best and pay them well along with the best staff they want.

I agree with everything you said but the elite part. Perhaps you were being sarcastic.

TH is his own worst enemy. Because he thinks he is smarter than everyone else, he won't listen, and is oblivious to the facts and circumstances staring him in the face which are spelling out his impending doom. He won't make changes until the disaster has happened. Well, right now he has one in the making. We'll see how he handles it.

That’s where I'm at right now.

But I wonder if he pays attention to things like this and wants to put a strategy in place to improve it. When a particular unit is underperforming (to be polite) you have to do something different.

Negative punt return yardage?

I agree, but I guess that’s my point. Texas is a program that could go out and hire a great coach now. No need to have someone who needs to develop in to a great coach.
