TEXAS-OU game thread 2023

In my lifetime, with the rare exception of John Blake, OU seems to always get the coach right, and usually the quarterback as well. Ewers can’t handle pressure or throw deep and I’m still not sure if Sark is a good situational coach.

well, when all is said and done, OU EARNED ITS VICTORY.
Stopping us on 4 downs on the one yard line was monumental. Give them credit. However they knew runs were coming and they stuffed us. I hate being predictable.
Their offense moved the ball efficiently at the end of both halves.
They earned their victory with knockout punches.
However we have a lot to play for still, with the opportunity of playing for a win against OU in the ccg. A win may get us into the playoffs.

At least we are no longer in the same division and have the chance to meet them again in a CCG.
At least we didn't get blown out 66-13.
I've seen worse days.
We stumbled and bumbled around for whatever reason and still had the game won with 75 seconds left.
I was really pissed but I've slept on it and things are not so dark this morning.
I don't think this team collapses.
I think we make it to the CCG and hopefully get another shot at the dirt burglers.
A magical undefeated season and playoff berth would've been nice.
And a spot in the playoffs is still on the table.
I will be satisfied with a Conference Championship.

I'm very disappointed that we lost, especially in the way it happened. But I thought OU outplayed us most of the day and yet we still had a chance to win. That's what I'm going to take away from this game, the heart and fight this team showed even when things weren't going well. I hate losing to OU. It sucks. But this team grew yesterday, IMO. They showed me they are the real deal. We might lose again. Who knows? But I think this game will ultimately make us stronger. Time will tell.

Agree. I have to OU credit. They are much better than I thought. It was evident early on this would be a dogfight. And Texas teams in years past would have lost this game by 20+. OU’s offense is legit but I thought the defense played well in spite of the 34 points. And to put up 30 on their defense is impressive. It could have been 40 except we had some really questionable play calling at the goal line and shot ourselves in the foot a few times.

I’m convinced even more than after the Bama game that this team is mentally tough. It bodes well for the rest of the season that losing a game we shouldn’t is less likely.

I hope we get another shot at them later this year.

I am very envious of OUs ability to turn their team around in 1 damn year from 5-7 (and 0-49) to this. And its not the 1st time this has happened. It takes us years and years to build an elite team and we mostly dont ever get there. How do they do it and why cant we?

This is also not the 1st time we have fought and clawed our way back into a game with the defense needing one dang stop to win it and they cannot deliver. Some things never seem to change.

I said this exact same thing. From being crappy to a National Championship contender in two years. Fairbanks/Switzer did it. So did Stoops. Riley kept it going , now this. We on the other hand are always on a five year plan and fire the coach after 4 years and start over.

They get a win, but we will still be in the hunt and probably still in the top 10. I’d rather lose this one than the last Big 12 Championship game. Be surprised if OU beats us twice.

This game reminds me of 2001. We played Colorado at home and beat them soundly but Colorado had several turnovers. We then had to play them again in the big 12 championship game. We didn’t get the turnovers this time and we lost.

If we meet Oklahoma in the championship game this year, the rematch should be a different story. We almost beat them yesterday and probably played one of our worst games to date. I don’t think they can hang with the talent we have… OU is not back.

The situation with the transfer portal is a nightmare set to explode. Yes we brought in AD our punter and Neyor. And players need A do-over for poor initial commitment decisions. But the free for all, wild west crap that we have going on will kill college sports sure as cancer. The NFL has better sense than to allow this ongoing auction. How does OU or TCU last year have a miraculous one year turnaround? Thay buy nine, NINE, new starters. Seven on defense. Nobody will ever know if these OU players will ever see campus. This is their last year of eligibility. Jeez, wake up NCAA or somebody. Texas, aTm, OU, maybe LSU can stand toe to toe and throw alumni oil money at 18YO. But most cant or wont. I still live and mope over UT wins. I dont die anymore please fix this mess.

All that “we’ll get ‘em next time” stuff is wishful thinking. The way this team plays down to the competition, like it did against Rice and Wyoming, means getting to the Big XII CG certainly isn’t a cinch.

They came out charged up against Bama, but for the other five games, not so much. Sark’s “go out and have fun” attitude sucks. How about “let’s go out and kick some Okie butts”!

Goes in cycles. OU had three lousy coaches in the 90’s and Texas beat them in the series 10-1 over an eleven span in the 60’s, early 70’s.

In the modern era, OU has succeeded when they have the better QB, which has been the case more than not since the Stoops era. Colt McCoy was 3-1 against them and last year QE was by far the best QB.

PK has no idea what to do with the up tempo offense. Took much better dc's a while to adjust back in the 2000's. Its almost impossible to get sacks with a 4 man rush so you have to have speed at corner or lb to make that happen. If we have it, its not apparent in pk's d. This bend but dont break is ok for non mobile qb's who are not running the spread. We do not have elite speed across the board and that was evident yesterday. Its been there before. I think Jonathan Brooks has speed but he too has been caught from behind. CJ Baxter is not going to run away from anyone so the OL has to block well and yesterday that didnt happen. Muschamp and Chizik had defense that could handle this but pk isnt there yet and may never be there. QE is not VY or Colt. He gets rattled and again does not have the it factor they had.

Further to the portal orgy. Some of you have walked into a locker room as an 18YO and faced the hard reality of comparing builds to 22 YO men. Humbling is an understatement. I cant imagine that wholesale team swaps in the portal can help recruiting. A stud HS lineman, say 6’5 265 wants to come, get developed and improve. Commits and enters. Next week team brings in developed 6’6 350 finished DL from elsewhere. Hello bench. Bring in nine of those and the cream of your recruiting class is somewhat pissed. Vibes reverberate, through the locker, and recruiting. And the effect on athletes who want to succeed in class is monster. Im studying and new DL is honky tonking. Bad,bad long term situation. Recruit fair, with tools fairly, build team chemistry, and add a strategic transfer as needed. Sark has built a culture that will continue to grow. But, he wont win Natty every year.

I think everyone expected Wyoming to be a much lesser team than they appear to be. They played well against us and are sitting at 5-1 so they are not a push over this year. QE was not ready yesterday and had that scared look. Just dont understand a competitor that doesnt have fight in them. I want to win no matter what & I expect that in all players. Losing the center so early yesterday hurt but its not like we dont know we have ol problems. The way to beat BV defenses is over the top and thats not QE strength. Once you make their safeties have to defend the speed of x and AD, it changes there defense to expose a huge weakness. ou played a better game yesterday and Texas played its worst game to date but that was partly because of how ou played.

Texas left/gave up 21 points yesterday. First interception, Sanders fumble (great hit not his fault) and not scoring on the goal line. Meanwhile, OU executed better and won the game.

This loss was painful. However, it pales in comparison to losing future games to teams like TCU, Iowa State and/or Tech. Texas should go 12-0 or 11-1 every year (think Alabama, tOSU, Georgia, Michigan, etc.). All of these teams can lose to their rival and still play for the ultimate prize as long as they take care of business against the weak sisters in their conference. The next 4-5 weeks will show me if "Texas is back". No more ridiculous losses to these lowly Big 12 teams.

I thought Ewers played well after a slow start. I don't pin this loss on him at all.

One thing I'll grudgingly admit about OU turning things around is this unexplainable thing called culture that OU seems to have that breeds winning. Since the advent of the Big XII they've won something like 30 more games than we have and 11 more conference championships. Hate them though I do, my unbiased self says they are superior to us by a big margin. Having said all of that I expect them to stub their toe somewhere along the line this season like they usually do.

QE is one dimensional. He cannot move well and throw. He cant run. He cannot throw a long ball with consistency. He had a lot of completions yesterday but where were they? I am not sure we make it through the rest of the season without another loss.We are still two years away from being a top 10 team consistently. OU exposed.our weak defense,QB,and game plan preparation .

Painful quick re-watch…
D Line was AWOL and of all ways to loose this game, that didn’t even enter my head prior to kickoff.
Also tackling and lack of play making in back end. Way too many 0 yard plays turned into 3 yard gains, 5 yard plays turned into 10 yard plays and 10 yard plays turned into 15-30 yards.
Texas didn’t come in determined to be the better team. Came in trying to withstand a storm.
Hell of a game by Ewers. Pics were not totally his fault and he did what he need to in the end to give Texas a chance. Almost like OU baited him to run sometimes and then collapsed well. Good coaching by them.
No more end arounds in the red zone, Sark. Ever.
Last drive probably doesn’t happen with Watts. He’s the boundary corner and certainly they don’t score the way they did with uncovered WR in boundary corner.
No idea what we thought we were doing on Defense.
Despite being out played and coached in many spots through out, the team retook the lead with 1:15. OU could have buried us after the Ewers fumble, being up 10 and the team bowed up and responded. And that’s not cope. It’s what happened. In the end OU does what they need to win and Texas D doesn’t.
Also, Burt did good. The first field goal he had to drive through swirling wind, and OU kicker missed similar field goal in same direction. In the end he should have been kicking that FG at the end of an Alabama esque drive where there is no time left. Bad clock management from Sark. On field for most of season says this team has a different attitude and is more developed than last two years. Texas is likely is another close game at some point this year, but Arlington still has to happen. D line not showing is still unfathomable. Of all things, that’s your anchor and good fronts can calm things down when execution elsewhere isn’t there. Not so in Cotton Bowl.

The more I think about the game, the angrier I get. We should not have lost. As most will agree, there’s probably not a position group in which OU had a talent advantage yesterday. Yet they came in snorting snot, and they slobber-knocked us. We weren’t ready. Perhaps Sark over emphasized the fact that “hey, enjoy the moment, the environment and have fun.” Let me tell you, OU did not come in “to have fun.” They came in to beat the crap out of us, and physically, they did.

The worst position group was the entire defense, and the performance was pathetic, and inexplicable. I blame that on attitude and preparation, but also on PK. With plenty of talent, he had no answer for Gabriel.

I hope they learn something from the abomination that happened yesterday. And I hope we actually see if they did, in December.

I agree with most all of your post. Holding PK accountable for the defense disappearing act is correct. K refused to put pressure on Gabriel on that last drive--the drive where ou shoved the dagger in our hearts.
Gabreil is not superman. Not surprisingly, Given all day with 3 linemen rushing, he was able to find open receivers. We had our two best DB's out injured--Catalon and Watts. Even more reason to put pressure on Gabriel instead of asking our wounded D backfield to cover everybody for 5-7 seconds. That was simply not possible.

Here is the bad news: the UT team I saw play ou yesterday is beatable by any number of B12 teams. That team will lose again and not make it to the B12 Conference championship.
The good news is that maybe that flat, out of synch bunch will not show up again this season. Maybe the team we've seen all year will make it back to all the games. Maybe Coach K will have his brain fixed. I sure hope so.
BTW, where was our best LB'r, Ford? He was awol. He played like he had the flu. Seriously, is he ill? He was slow, out of it, not flying to the ball. Not disruptive in the passing lanes. He needs to show up with all cylinders firing or be sat down until he is healthy and ready to kick some asss.
