TEXAS-OU game thread 2023

QE is one dimensional. He cannot move well and throw. He cant run. He cannot throw a long ball with consistency. He had a lot of completions yesterday but where were they? I am not sure we make it through the rest of the season without another loss.We are still two years away from being a top 10 team consistently. OU exposed.our weak defense,QB,and game plan preparation .
31-37 for almost 350 yards is a weak QB? Had he had the time Gabriel had he might have gone 35-37.

QE kept fighting and brought us back to what should have been a win. He shook off a lot of hard hits and hung in under constant pressure.

odd that after the game I witnessed you immediately rag on QE. I would not trade QE for Gabriel or any other QB we have played against.

I agree with most all of your post. Holding PK accountable for the defense disappearing act is correct. K refused to put pressure on Gabriel on that last drive--the drive where ou shoved the dagger in our hearts.
Gabreil is not superman. Not surprisingly, Given all day with 3 linemen rushing, he was able to find open receivers. We had our two best DB's out injured--Catalon and Watts. Even more reason to put pressure on Gabriel instead of asking our wounded D backfield to cover everybody for 5-7 seconds. That was simply not possible.

Here is the bad news: the UT team I saw play ou yesterday is beatable by any number of B12 teams. That team will lose again and not make it to the B12 Conference championship.
The good news is that maybe that flat, out of synch bunch will not show up again this season. Maybe the team we've seen all year will make it back to all the games. Maybe Coach K will have his brain fixed. I sure hope so.
BTW, where was our best LB'r, Ford? He was awol. He played like he had the flu. Seriously, is he ill? He was slow, out of it, not flying to the ball. Not disruptive in the passing lanes. He needs to show up with all cylinders firing or be sat down until he is healthy and ready to kick some asss.
Great post. The only thing I could add is the our lack of a true quality edge was evident in this game. OU’s OL did a great job of keeping our big interior DL away from Gabriel.

The more I think about the game, the angrier I get. We should not have lost. As most will agree, there’s probably not a position group in which OU had a talent advantage yesterday. Yet they came in snorting snot, and they slobber-knocked us. We weren’t ready. Perhaps Sark over emphasized the fact that “hey, enjoy the moment, the environment and have fun.” Let me tell you, OU did not come in “to have fun.” They came in to beat the crap out of us, and physically, they did.

The worst position group was the entire defense, and the performance was pathetic, and inexplicable. I blame that on attitude and preparation, but also on PK. With plenty of talent, he had no answer for Gabriel.

I hope they learn something from the abomination that happened yesterday. And I hope we actually see if they did, in December.
Not sure the reason but we do not have the same fire as the dirt burglars. They were much better prepared and knew exactly what plays we were running on offense. Even as bad as we played on O, we still had the lead with 1:30 left in the game. The D was just not ready and that falls to pk. If he remains the dc, Texas will have a hard time competing for a championship. Remember Kansas game, even though Bean was running well, the stopped that after half which helps Texas.

You’re right, and this is a tough criticism. QE’s skill set is spectacular, and because of him yesterday, we almost pulled off a miracle that would have probably been an undeserved win.

However…

I do believe that he represents almost no running threat which is a liability. I’m not suggesting that we can’t be great with him. I’m just saying that I wish he could run a bit more, and take a hit. Contrast that to someone the size of Murphy (does anyone doubt that he could take a hit?), or the speed of Manning.

In the college game, my gut feel is that the ability to run can be critical at times.

We tend to eat each other alive on days like this, and I hate that. Someone posted earlier and I agree, I wish the sporting fortunes of teenagers didn't affect me the way it does, win or lose.

I have a buddy who is currently in Jerusalem, and I have no idea how he is. Oh well, beat Cougar High.

Have you heard from your buddy in Israel?

One thing I'll grudgingly admit about OU turning things around is this unexplainable thing called culture that OU seems to have that breeds winning.

This is the only thing I can come up with to explain how OU can turn around a bad team in 1 year and win championships. That entire school's administration, top to bottom, is about winning football games and that is their priority #1. Not so at UT.

Exactly. And that’s why I don’t envy the culture at OU.

Well that was a very fun game to be at. But heartbreaking at the end. A few high level items, and some comments from the horseshoe...

1 Hard to overcome 3 turnover deficit. Period.

2 Surprised our defense couldn't get real pressure on the QB without giving him a running Lane up the middle

3 The refs seemed to screw us (and I don't play that card hardly ever)

QB - he looked good for 90% of the game. But he's started tight multiple times and Brooks has shown to be almost elite. Why pass so much the first couple of series? I hate it. Pass to set up the run? Once QE settled in, I bet he completed 90% the last three quarters. Like the Murphy package.

RB - As stated earlier, run the ball more. Brooks is great. Baxter still looks injured but did well also.

OL and JTS - missed way too many blocks. I mean whiffs.

I liked what I saw from the receivers

ST - Fake punt... Allsome. Punt block.. Allsome. Roughing the punter... Dumb. Worthy on punta he can't run back... Frustrating.

Defense - from the end zone I just couldn't figure out why we didn't get to the QB. It baffles me.

Fun game though.

Other random observations:

1) the coupon situation only gets worse each year
2) generally, both fan bases were very cordial to each other.
3) I didn’t feel like there was much energy from the team or fans. But I was up very high in the end zone so maybe I’m wrong
4) The Texas Ex party area is best place pre-game. Easy to get a beer and band was great.
5) Students literally smoking weed in our section.

General thoughts:

1) It was a great game. A real showcase and the SEC should be happy to land these two schools.
2) I agree OU seemed more angry and willing to sell their bodies out for this game.
3) OU seemed smart on defense, evidenced by the OU defender who grabbed Worthy's helmet and pulled it back on 4th and 1. He had a real awareness of the situation.
4) Baxter is either hurt or not that great.
5) Very disappointed in how easily OU moved the ball down the field for the winning touchdown. That snot-nosed Stoops was way too open. The bust in the end zone is also very disappointing. What happened there?
6) O line and D line lost their respective portion of the game.
7) 1st and goal at the one and not scoring will haunt us for a long time.
8) OU's defense will be the best we see all year. Their pressure put stress on our players minds and I think this was not mentioned in the post game comments. All we heard was that we didn't play our best game. There is a reason for that.

Hate on Texas--- They are literally obsessed with Texas all year long. My first year in OK I moved into a small gate community. One circle with about 35 houses. The wife put out a Texas flag game week.
They literally paintballed our house inside the gated area. This was indicative of the prevailing attitudes.

Why do you think the team didn't play their best game
I have seen this before in RRR and NEVER understood why

That's just sick.

I was responding to what I thought I heard Sark say. I just think OU took the pressure to another level, especially on defense. The stakes were very high. Their sense of urgency and determination was the cause, our inability to win the game was the effect. Certainly, we came back. It's a weird analysis I guess. I feel we should have won the game given they had 75 yards to go, 70-80 seconds go go and no time-outs. I would have taken that all day long as a starting point in this game. But we collapsed. There was just something missing and I think OU ran that drive to win and we ran the drive to survive. Maybe that's coaching.

I feel bad about the loss but not at the expense of our remaining games. Everyone will be up for us, no matter what happened this past weekend. If this weekend taught me anything is past performances mean nothing when it comes to our opponents. They will all play their best game against us. We must match their energy to win.

I hope you left the paintball paint on your house the entire time you lived there as well as painting, in big block letters, "F*UCK U OKIES!".

QE has taken plenty of hits, often last year and some very hard hits against OU on almost every play so that criticism appears inaccurate. I have seen him run, quite effectively, as a last option. Sark wants him to stay in pocket and run as a last result.

I completely disagree with you points after “however”.

Have you heard from your buddy in Israel?
I spoke to his dad this morning. Right now he should be on a flight from Tel Aviv to Italy. Evidently getting out is very difficult, some diplomatic strings were pulled for several Americans and they were able to get on what few flights are getting out.

I appreciate you asking.

You saved me from saying the same thing. I hate losing but Texas has the better team. This was a bad day and I hope we will play OU again this year. No rushing the punter, spy Gabriel, and no turnovers.

"Defense - from the end zone I just couldn't figure out why we didn't get to the QB. It baffles me."

Same here, puzzling. I really expected Ant Hill to terrorized QBs this year but that just ain't happening.

Fair… but QE has enough mobility to make most defenses think twice. I mean he’s converted at least 5 3rd downs with his legs in last 3 games with multiple long running TDs. Sark doesn’t want running QBs. He wants elite RBs and and run game that sets up play action. I don’t know if everyone on the board can tell the difference between Texas attack and others. It’s not spread. It’s lots of 2 tight end counter pass protection and RPO out of tighter sets. Every now and then he goes 5 wide or 4 wide with straight drop but the run game and play action RPO are the thing. I will also note the Gabriel is not a huge running threat. Just enough. Will also echo the spirit of your post that thinking QE is the problem is an astronomically bad take.
