TEXAS-IOWA STATE Game Thread

The only two negative things on our defense IMO that need to be fixed are: 1. Find able CB backups
And 2. The continuing lack of speed to the QB from our starting edge rushers.
Going forward we will get beat by OSU if those areas are not improved, quickly.
On offense, Quinn had an off day, but everyone does at age 19. I like the way he throws super accurate passes.
Cain needs some work after today.
Someone at WR has to step up besides J-Witt and Worthy as a third option. The defenses are really keying in on JT.
The running game won this day.

Bijan was the man today. Ran hard, had some spectacular plays mixed in and generally just wore the cyclones out. We danced with the one that brung us.
Yes^^^. And Bijan catches the ball as well as most wide receivers. There is no linebacker who can cover him in this conference.
Look for more of Bijan in the passing game from here on out. That catch he made near the goal line was spectacular.

I remember an early interview of Sark when he first got here. He said we would run a pro style play action offense. With Bijan and Roschon moving the ball and the chains, with at least competent blocking, that opens it all up and we’ll do well.

See my post about Bijan’s receiving skills. We saw a glimpse of it today. We’ll see more of it from here on.
Yes JT was Campbell’s main concern and he schemed his D to slow him down. It almost got them a win. You can bet our future opponents noticed.
Sark has only scratched the surface of Bijan’s skill set.

Matt Campbell:
ON HUNTER DEKKERS’ FUMBLE AND THE REVIEW
“Obviously, nobody knows and that’s the problem. The question is, man, is he down? Is it targeting? They said they were only reviewing the targeting. The fact of the matter, it looked like his knee was down. But again, I’m sure it’s like everything else — we’ll get no clarification on it.”
About time to get that man some cheese with that whine!!

Love those passes to RBs. Both Robinsons. Roschon too. Part of our bread and butter by now.

We scored late twice last year to give ourselves a chance, OU, KU.

What never happened last year was our opponents self destructing late in the 4th to help us win. The Hutchinson drop never happened last year.

We can feel good about a lot of things, but what this team has a bit of more compared to last year is good fortune.

People don’t care to critically analyze and understand what really happens. ISU hurt themselves quite a bit today. It was a disappointing effort, but it was a critical win. Very critical and that can’t be understated.
on the flip side of your post we also made mistakes that almost gave them a win. we hurt ourselves and gave them chances so your post is a wash and irrelevant.

I’m glad we won but we made Dekker look like Peyton Manning. I haven’t seen that many blown coverages in a while. Are the DB’s confused?
It was way too close. Iowa State isn’t very good, and we needed heroics, the best 1-2 RB in the country and mad drama at home to squeak by.

someone said Ewers was rather pedestrian today.
17/26, 65% 3 tds 0 int.
not bad at all.
not sharp either, but he is a first year starter.
next week will need him to be sharp to win

At one point we were playing 2 backups in the secondary, one of which was a true freshman. I agree it wasn’t pretty

Sure they did! Agree with Poms....Texas had just as many hicups that definitely impacted the end result

The main commentator was typical ABC idiot. RG III did pretty well IMO - I like his QB-centric analysis. My main litmus test of announcers is - do they avoid saying stupid things? For example the main announcer kept confusing QE and the ISU QB.
I didn't expect to, but I liked RGIII also. Evcept for occasional silliness, he was informative. I also liked him admitting he was wrong on the "targetting",

You can't blame everything on Ewers. The 3-3-5
is a bit of a gimmck defense. UT doesn't see it that often. It requires the offense to attack in a disciplined, coordinated way. Both the QB and the WR's
need to be on the same page and they are young. Put McKoy and Shipley and Whitaker out there, and it would be different.

Agree with poms. Ewers played pretty well. He got off to slow start but played solid after that. 3 tds no turnovers and let’s not forget Cain dropped a 60 yard td pass.
Iowa st has a good defense.

Actually ISU is fairly good. And on defense very good. Offensively, they have struggled in every one of their conference games except Baylor. Yet, Baylor is the only team to beat them by more than 3 points.
They played us extremely well defensively, taking JT out of his game.
Their D sets confused Ewers. He is inexperienced. Campbell’s defense exposed him a bit. Even so he had 3 td passes.
We are not head and shoulders better than anyone left on our schedule.
They are all gonna be dogfights.

Yep! I know the short quick passes were schemes for Card but they work just as well for Ewers. Hope Sark goes back to those a little more going forward. Bijan and Whit can’t be stopped on those, plus it opens up everyone else.

Agreed. It’s wonderful we won.
And our running game was great while Ewers was pedestrian.
But we made a miserable offense look good today. I’m wondering if it was blown coverages or if it was a bad scheme.
Hopefully the latter, since we can probably shore that up quicker than improving our personnel.

Iowa State seemed to have a lot of wide-open receivers.
It would help if we'd of had any pressure on the QB. We got 1 sack and other than that barely touched him. DE's looked like last year. Against Sanders however, I don't care if we get any sacks. Everyone needs to stay in their lanes and get pressure on him and tackle when he tucks it. You go to wide and he's tucking and running.

what I didn't like was that rg111, quickly, from the get go, accused us of targeting, like he wanted it to be targeting, without even reviewing. So he had to retract and look like a fool. so him admitting he was wrong was not virtuous to me but a necessity. I hope he is able to learn something.

When it’s a close game, I suppose that’s always the case regarding mistakes. As to whether my post was irrelevant, perhaps so but I was responding to another who stated we wouldn’t have scored late to take a lead. I gave example of tying scores late.

And it is incredibly rare that the opponent drops an easy TD with 2.5 minutes left to play then follows it up with a fumble a minute later. For Texas, we certainly haven’t had that kind of fortune in some time.

We had no turnovers and only 4 penalties. And got a critical call in our favor, which is often not the case.

We won. That’s the most important thing.

Perhaps your comments are accurate but its very frustrating that we know that D is coming and if our qb is confused then our OC did a poor job of preparing. I think back to Colts days and recall a lot of audibles because he knew exactly what the defense was doing. Both Colt and QE are very accurate passers and throw and easy ball to catch. Its just different than Card. I hope with continuity that the OL and QB/WR evolve to be more proactive. That 3-3-5 should not cause us a problem running or throwing with the talent we have. If that took JT out of the picture then we have 3-4 others who should be able to step up. Happy for a W but know we were lucky to get it. Onto the next opponent.

Texas is better this year than last year. Like what happened at Tech, still a ways to go. Texas OL has 2 true freshman and 2 sophomores. The QB is freshman and the TE and WR are soph. JWhit and the RB’s are the leaders on this team offensively.

Another great game on defense. Crushing hit causing the fumble at the end of the game was icing on the cake. Starting to fully realize that those who were behing PK from the beginning were right and those like me who were not were wrong

"A miserable offense?" ISU leads the nation in completions and has the number one receiver coming into the game.
You don't know what your talking about.
Their pass offense is a well oiled machine which I myself was not aware.
And then their defense is number one in the big twelve. So we beat a formidable opponent.

I don't understand why when a receiver is coming into an area he isn't immediately covered by the nearest defender, hip to hip until he leaves your area. Or if it's man to man stay on his hip.
Texas tends to do a great job covering grass, or in most cases now, synthetic turf.
