Texas Georgia game thread #2. This time it's serious.

As much as I don't blame QE for the loss (Texadelphia's post was right on), I had flashbacks to the UDub game last year and felt the same way at the end of regulation... Skepticism. I just didn't think he could pull off the last minute comeback.

Player mistakes were why we lost the game though. Drops on good passes, penalties, missed FGs.

I think Ewers is a very accurate passer.

However, football is an emotional game, full of ups and downs. The only emoting I see from Ewers is him sitting on the bench pouting. Never seen his face or body language in a way that would tell team mates we got this game so follow me and let's go get it done.

Maybe he is to much like Sark. Managing the game with a slide ruler.

Football isn't rocket science and you need a leader at QB on the field that can give you the most options to win. And everybody knows that that person is Arch.

So here is what a real coach actually does when it becomes obvious.

"In 2018 At Alabama, Jalen Hurts became the starting quarterback as a true freshman and led his team to the national championship game as both a freshman and sophomore — and was rewarded for his efforts by being benched in the national championship game by true freshman Tua Tagovailoa, who engineered a second-half comeback win" .

It really ain't that effing hard. Precedent has been set!

Grow some Sark!

I don’t know Johnny. For Tre most part Ewers just seems very “even” to me. Never gets too high or low.
Yes it does not seem like he necessarily has “fire”. And maybe that could help but that is just not who he is.
and not necessary for a QB.
Plenty of examples of elite QBs who are not firebreathers. Being even keeled is a huge leadership quality,

That said he did look deflated last night and that is not good. Not the first time I have seen it.

Let me start by saying I am a fan of Sark. But, the game yesterday reminded me of the playoff game last year. On there final drive we drive crisply down the field, get in the red zone with a chance to win and the play calling becomes useless.

This is my first post at this site. Be gentle with me.

I've watched a LOT of football during my 67 years on the planet but I'm still no expert. Just my humble opinion about why Texas lost twice to Georgia and why Texas and Ewers struggle on offense, especially from the 20 yard line in against some teams....

-- Texas has trouble run blocking good defensive lines. Georgia's defensive line kicked Texas' a-- twice this year, especially on running plays.

-- The officiating was obviously biased in favor of Georgia. I'm an older dude who has seen much of the planet and I do believe in conspiracies.

-- Texas special teams are really bad as compared to most division 1 college football teams. Both our kicker and punter are seriously sub par.

-- Ewers could be a fine "game manager" type quarterback... with a decent running game. Without a decent to good running game, he is incapable of winning a ball game with his passing ability. It would be great if he was mobile and could run but that would not be a complete substitute for an effective running game. Playing Manning wouldn't solve the problem either.

Texas will win in the playoffs until they face a team with a defensive line that out big fatties up front cannot block on running plays. It's almost that simple. Texas has been able to block most of the defensive lines it has faced this year well enough to let Ewers be an effective game manager. Combined with a very, very good defense, that has been enough to win 11 games but it probably won't be enough to win a national championship because the running game just isn't quite good enough.

Good first post...

That said, whilst exploring the site and navigating the ads, you will see a link to sponsor. Gets rid of the ads and makes for a vastly improved experience... 😀

Different type of running style. As a general observation you cannot dick around in the backfield against a fast physical defense like Georgia or other teams in conference. You have to get downhill and hit seams quickly, get what you can and hope to pop it. Texas running game is outside zone blocking and slow developing. Doesn’t work in against a Georgia that plays man up with the ability to do so and ignores all the influences of fakes.
Failure to have a downhill running game in the red zone has been an issue with Texas for too many damn years.

I wish there was an edit function but you can't ask for everything. "Our" big fatties....

I am not a fan of blaming refs. I see bad calls in every game I watch.

But there have been two games I felt the verdict was in before the game was played: The Bonfire Game and last night

I am 64. And I agree

Hoff,

I've been posting and begging for weeks to have kicker tryouts, both punt & FG. Don't we have a soccer team? Whether varsity or club, let's go raid it.

In the mid 90s, UVA had a great defense (I think 4-5 players drafted in first three rounds), but no kicker. Someone I know really well went to McCue Center & told Coach Welsh & Lantz that UVA's soccer team had won two National Championships, send somebody to their practice and bring back a kicker. I think his name was Garcia, but he did beat Mack Brown & Greg Davis.
Not saying this is the case with Sark, but over many years of watching players in club and high school soccer, I have noticed that too many football coaches look down their noses at the soccer players. They refuse offers from soccer coaches to develop the kickers on the football team. I have personally witnessed this. Many high school football coaches are arrogant asses and with your knowledge of high school football in Texas I know that I am not telling you anything. Soccer players not only have the leg, but they are also great athletes.

Sark is going to get us there, but his play selection is tough to stomach some times. All those crazy throws at the end and slow developing pass plays with multiple misdirections against a defense like this is goofy. The forced runs were not producing anything. It was said earlier in the thread and it bears repeating. If you watch Georgia Defensive game threads you can see that they become rather pedestrian when faced with a running/dual threat qb. The sad thing is that the film dictates that and Sark had to know that and was avoiding it for whatever reason. This is coaching malpractice IMO. Hopefully he will get better in these situations in the future. Being stubborn is not an asset in a HC.

Bond really hurt us today with the holds and tips. He isn't right and that injury must be lingering.

When GA sends out a back-up punter you should be ready for a fake in that situation. Especially when we are setting up a return.

Kicker has not been good this year. Sark needs to spend some portal dollars.

This may not be a terrible thing as two weeks off is better than three at this point in the season. I expect a bye team hangover in the second round.
Trying to run the ball on first AND second down on our first possession of the third quarter are the calls that bothered me.

I generally agree with this assessment, with a slight modification.

Ewers played a good game. The problem is that against a team — a coach and a D like Georgia — the OL has to play an almost perfect game, as does QE. That’s too much to ask. And as Gerry Hamilton of OTF said this morning, a 3rd year starting QB must be able to convert in the high red zone in crunch time. Quinn simply cannot.

I know people are probably sick of hearing me harp on using Arch more, but that seems obvious. Look at what Georgia did. They put in a quarterback who could also run and he won the game for them. His presence opened up the run game, allowing Etienne to do what he did. He would not have had those runs with Beck behind center.

Quinn lacks the late game heroic characteristics that VY and Colt possessed. Yes (!), that’s a high bar. The difference with this team is that neither VY nor Colt had a dynamic player the caliber of Arch Manning waiting in the wings.

My opinion is that Sark acquiesces and starts strategically using Arch in critical situations, we will win it all, this year. But so far and unlike one of his mentors, Saban, he’s reluctant to make such a change in critical moments.

I can't disagree with that. Unless our offensive line can win most of the run blocking battles, alternate measures must be taken. Some type of package with Manning is certainly one of them but you can't just put him in and run what is essentially a wildcat. Fortunately, he also has a strong arm. If Texas' conventional running game is effective, the Horns are very hard to beat.
