San Diego

Never like these cold windy games at the disch. Not Texas baseball friendly.

Our relief pitchers have been sitting in the cold for hours.

Kudos to Texas for keeping the game close and extending it into extra innings. Otherwise the game was too cold and windy for baseball.

Grasping defeat from the jaws of victory. We’ll see who Coach starts on Sunday.

Hurley was pretty decent today.

Jack has had a forgettable first few games. He’ll generally warm up by mid-season, then finish out in late seasons and post-season on a tear.

Pretty good baseball player. I don’t really see him as our cleanup hitter though.

Galvan needs work defensively. Schusler may be our starter for 2/3 of the games (or more). We’ve been spoiled by catchers like Ardoin and G Wagon. Now we have more “normal” talent at catcher.

O'Dowd and Belyeu haven't got a hit yet...that has to change. O'Dowd is for sure better than this, so is P. Brown, the two upper classmen need to get their stuff together and help this team with Thomas and Powell. Those four have to be consistent until Gasparino and Sanders adjust to the college level. Schuessler is hitting right where he left off, I would move him up already:

Thomas
Powell
Schuessler
Brown
Flores
Gasparino
Cummings
Sanders
O'Dowd
(i doubt coach makes any changes though, still early in the season)

Gasparino reminds me of J Thomas a little, he's struck out four times so far but he's been hitting too, when he figures it out he's going to be a hard out, he actually needs to move up. I like Belyeu's defense but he needs to figure the offense out quickly or Cummings is going to be in RF soon.

Defensively, I'm disappointed that the catchers are still down on a knee with runners on the base path. I saw, I think it was Schuessler throw down to second, it wasn't even close, wasn't even thrown accurate, it looked like a desperation heave. Like get up off those knees dude and pop up to throw. YOU CANNOT MOVE ON YOUR KNEES!!!!

J. Duplantier mishandled another ground ball to him, i don't know if he would have been able to make the play or not, he didn't even get an opportunity cause he didn't field it cleanly. Errors are what done him in last year, he's a baller but can't make errors every time you're on the field and I only mention it cause that was a problem with him last year. The official scorer didn't give him or O'Dowd errors on the three plays that come to mind so i will give them the benefit of the doubt, but something to keep an eye on. Clutch hitter though and he has been a clutch hitter since he stepped foot on campus, i wish he would clean up his defense cause I would like to see him and O'Dowd in a somewhat equal rotation.

Overall, it feels like San Diego is outplaying us defensively and wants the win more than us.....just how it feels, not saying it's true. I've seen a lot of hustle from San Diego so far.

Yep.

Both Schussler and Galvan are a noticable step down defensively at catcher from where we've been in recent years. At least Schuesler is a difficult out when he's at bat.

O'Dowd isn't playing much like a captain yet. I still have confidence in him based on his good performance during the last half of last year. Maybe Jack's a warm weather player.

One thing O'Dowd did all last year was have good at bats. Even when he was out, the pitcher had to throw 5-6-7-8 pitches to retire him. He annoyed many a pitcher fouling balls back and driving up pitch counts.

Even Flores looks a bit off defensively. Powell even flubbered a ball during game 1.

Have we stopped doing infield drills or something...?

If these two aren't getting it done, other possibilities at C are:

Powell
Oliver Service
Nik Sanders

Flores

It felt great to post this when our pitcher wasn't on the mound!

Appreciate the updates while the LHN is showing tennis. Cant believe Witt struggled right out of the gate….very concerning

Not his day. Hopefully he’ll get back to form.

For now, Howard just has to get outs and minimize the damage.

Another fly out. We are lucky to get out of the top of the second only down 2-0. They stranded 3 runners.

I think Coach Pierce and Howard just had a pleasant conversation about the migratory patterns of Canada Geese.
