Replacement for Augie....Who would you offer ???

No talk about the Dallas Baptist coach? Seems like he has been solid, but maybe not enough established history?
He turned down Baylor which didn't sit well with the Baptists. In hindsight that was a smart move staying out of that mess. However one would think if he was the target he would already be on onboard.

Everybody needs to step away from the keyboard and take a deep breath. None of these guys (Bohls, Autullo, Rogers, Ketchum, etc.) have any more knowledge of what is going on in the athletics dept than we do.
That is giving Bohls, Autullo, Rogers, Ketchum, etc. a lot of credit.

I would be okay with either Pierce or Whitting at this point. Pierce knows what he's doing and Whitting was a tireless recruiter for TCU. Whitting has recruited well at UH also. I hope we at least talk to Holliday and Jay Johnson as well. Another guy who is going to be a great coach imo is Kirk Saarloos from TCU. He is legit, but doesn't have the skins yet.

After letting Augie go, if we don't get the TCU coach or the Florida coach, the athletic department should be completely embarrassed. Although, I'd consider Okie State's coach Holliday. He was an excellent pitching coach for us. It was a downturn when he left and lil'Skippie-to-the-mound 30 times a game took his place.
Augie had his chance to hire a great hitting coach when he got rid of Tommy...Didn't happen.
Augie had the hitting coach for the Texas Rangers lined up, but the athletic department wouldn't approve the money to hire him.

I'm told Augie Garrido tried to bring on former Texas Rangers hitting coach Rudy Jaramillo to his staff to be paid out of summer baseball camp money, but the move was nixed because then-AD Steve Patterson couldn't approve Jaramillo as a volunteer coach because Jaramillo couldn't be paid out of that pot of money under NCAA compliance rules. -- Kirk Bohls, 6-15-2016.

“In sports other than football and basketball, a volunteer coach is any coach who does not receive compensation or remuneration from the institution’s athletics department or any organization funded in whole or in part by the athletics department or that is involved primarily in the promotion of the institution’s athletics program. (e.g., booster club, athletics foundation association).”

So the issue wasn’t the amount of money, it was that the NCAA won’t allow a school to use summer camp money to pay a "volunteer coach". The solution was to fire Tommy Nickolson and hire Rudy Jaramillo.

I think you're confusing your Hollidays - the one that was pitching coach here and former OSU is Tom. OSU's present coach, Josh, is his son.

Florida coach is now available to talk to if we want to $$$$$$ him away, thanks to Texas Tech...But he may not want to face the Red Raiders 3 times a year....LOL

Perrin said he wanted someone by the end of June so time is getting short. I guess we are about to find out just how close of a family Florida is.

If we're just throwing money at someone to see how much it takes to make it stick, who's the better hire: Schlossnagle or O'Sullivan? TCU's coach has 642 wins vs 299 losses....O'Sullivan has 351 wins and 174 losses.....O'Sullivan is 1 year older than Jim. Has either one of them won a National Championship? I don't think so....at least I don't remember it if O'Sullivan did. I know Schlossnagle has not.
Schlossnagle would have the Texas ties...if that's meaningful.
OSU's coach, Holliday, makes $450,000.00 per year.....is he worth consideration, given how low his salary is right now?
Schlossnagle's brand of play is very different from what we've been used to with Augie and Cliff.
My guess is Schlossnagle is a better coach that O'Sullivan, overall. Don't know about their assistants, etc., although TCU's pitching staff has been lights-out. And they sure have recruited well.

FWIW, I sit next to a former scout for the Astros at the UT games. He said based on his experiences with Schlossnagle's programs, he would not allow his son to play for him. He won't give many details, but it has to do with scholarships and the way they are distributed and redistributed year-to-year without warning.

Is it commonplace for coaches to promise a big recruit a scholarship and, if he comes to college, yank one from an existing player only to give it to the star? I don't know that this is the case with Schloss, but based on the bits and pieces of info I've gathered, it could be.

Baseball scholarships is like playing Musical Chairs. As long as the kid knows up front that this could happen, I have no issue with it.....if he is blindsiding kids and parents another story.

So glad we interviewed Heefner and one report says it went very well. When Baylor was courting him a few years back I wasn't thrilled at all he'd be off the market and in our conference when we moved on from Augie.

So now we're in need and he tossed back Baylor for a bigger fish, I won't second guess his being a solid hire worthy of excitement.

Short of O'Sullivan who's reportedly rebuffed our calls twice now, I'm fully down with some Heefner. Hope we seal the deal and get this ball rolling. :hookem:

All the candidates are now done with their season ( don't think Arizona and Coastal's coaches are on our list...even though they should be )......We should have our man in about three days.

With Skip headed to OU as pitching coach that tells me neither he or Tadlock are going to be our next head coach.

Do Pierce, Heefner or Whitting work directly with their pitchers? Really bummed that Tadlock doesn't seem to be in the mix at this point.

If we end up with one of those three, we should change our motto from "WE ARE TEXAS" to "WE WERE TEXAS". Unfortunately, we might be stuck with someone like them because we didn't wait until after the CWS to make the announcement that Augie was stepping down. All the top coaches have been getting raises and signing extensions thanks to the bad timing.

Hopefully something has been in the works and they simply had to wait for President Fenves to return from China to sign off on the deal. I, too, think Tadlock and Skip would have made a good duo.

It wouldn't have made a difference. Major schools have enough money to hang on to their coaches these days, and they can recruit as well as Texas, so there is no reason for coaches to leave a secure job to take over at a place like Texas.

Heard on the radio yesterday that Arizona coach Jay Johnson only makes $165K/year. I don't think AZ is gonna want to get into a bidding war with us if that is their starting point.

Hard pass. I would be embarrassed if the Texas players took part in the antics displayed by the AZ players (dugout dancing, music videos, etc.).

This is just embarrassing.....we fire the coach with the most wins in college baseball history.....we fire a coach who's brought us 2 National Championships.....we fire a coach who has, practically, the entire team back from last year.......and we're begging Texas Tech's coach to take the job? Seriously?
We better start begging Augie to get us out of the mess we've put ourselves in!!!

Now, we're interviewing mid-major coaches, and even they seem reluctant to take the job due to our bumbling. I'm sure they're looking at us and thinking "My Gawd! If they won't keep the coach with the most wins in college baseball history...if they won't keep a Hall of Fame Coach, if they won't keep a coach who ran a clean program and taught his players life's lessons, do I want to even consider coaching there?"
Now everyone says "just throw money...lots of money at somebody".....how totally embarrassing!

So our players with a pot last year or the year before wasn't the same? Our players dog piling wasn't showboating back in the day? Let the kids have fun, I promise they will stay off YOUR lawn.....smh

No it wasn't. Having a rally pot, monkey, shark, etc. is one thing. Acting like lunatics is another.

56,

I admire your love and devotion to Garrido, but the reasons you site pale in comparison to having him lurking around and looking over the shoulder of the new coach.

For some of us, his success is tarnished by his off the field antics. We don't and won't discuss those publicly, but if you are that close to him, you know some of those issues. I personally asked, suggested, nearly demanded his dismissal not long after he arrived. If the people offended by the incidents have gotten past it, fine, but don't paint him as a "saint" or the guy that saved our program.

As for being "the greatest baseball coach ever", keep thinking that, but it's hard to figure since he is the fourth best at The University of Texas.

I shall concede that the hiring process has been the biggest embarrassment since every basketball coach in the country turned us down and we wound up with Kaiser Bob.
