Replacement for Augie....Who would you offer ???

We will see how this plays out, but by moving Augie out early, we certainly raised the price of tea in China:

May 19 Texas Tech announced that the University and head baseball coach Tim Tadlock have agreed to a contract extension that will keep the fourth-year skipper in Lubbock through the 2022 season. The extension was approved Thursday by the Texas Tech Board of Regents.

Today Louisville announced that “the school will pay McDonnell $1 million annually in base salary, a raise of $325,000 per year over his existing deal, and added five years onto his current contract, taking it through 2026. The contract also includes several retention bonuses, including a $150,000 payment if McDonnell stays at U of L through next summer. He will receive another $150,000 bonus if he's still at U of L in 2020, and then the bonus drops to $100,000 every two years after that, beginning in 2022 and running through 2026.” Obviously they were afraid Texas would go after McDonnell and had a wealthy backer pony up the $, admission to their home games is free, so they obviously don’t have sufficient program revenue to afford to pay McDonnell $1 million annually.

The University of Florida AD is in the press daily assuring the faithful that “"We have a great relationship with Sully (Kevin O'Sullivan), we (sic) have a great relationship with us," Foley said Wednesday at the SEC Spring Meeting. "I expect him to be our baseball coach a long time." Even so, the best information I could find has Kevin O'Sullivan earning $ 567,000 a year and we were paying Augie more than $1M a year. I also looked into their facilities and they are a dump compared to Disch-Falk Field. Their stadium seats only $5,500 and the best seats are $10/game or $150/season. Disch-Falk Field seats 6,649 and Field Level Box Seats are $300 (plus foundation donation) for the season. I’m guessing we can win this bidding war if we choose to play.

If we had waited until after the College World Series to announce Augie’s reassignment, we might have been able to keep the lid on things and sign our guy for a lot less money. Of course lots of people knew Augie was in hot water, but they might not have spent the money until it was official and that might have been too late. ???

It almost seams that The University of Florida AD knows he's going to loose:

"Sully is very, very loved at our university," Foley said. "He was an assistant at Clemson and the school that gave him an opportunity to be a head coach was the University of Florida. Obviously we paid close, close attention to his compensation package. We know how good he is. At the end of the day, that's all you can do. If other schools come after Sully and he decides that's what he wants to do with his life, then you can't control that."

The Texas job is one of the most coveted and respected positions a college baseball coach can land.

The allure of becoming the next legendary coach of our legendary program has trumping power that extends beyond comparable compensation.

IMHO, concerns over failing to secure an elite replacement are a waste of nervous energy.

Sounds like Gus and Augie are both already on the case...the last two college baseball coaching legends of our storied program.

Gus has the 3rd highest winning percentage (.792) of all coaches with over 1,100 wins. Augie has the most wins in history.

These living legends will work wonders in convincing a coach like O'Sullivan of the many reasons leading Texas baseball is a unique, once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.

Even without their extra boost the program's immense accomplishments and opportunity to be a part of its history speaks for itself.

We shouldn't have any more trouble than Alabama will when eventually replacing Saban.

I couldn't imagine saying no if Gus and Augie were in my living room asking me to be the next legend at Texas. Salary would be a distant second in consideration.

Football was in worse shape? I don't think so......

Dont challenge the narrative that 6-7 and 5-7 were because of just terrible 8-5, 9-4 and 8-5 seasons :smile1:

Perrin went on record saying he'll begin the search shortly.

"I’ll be looking for somebody who has experience running a program of what we expect and what we’ve had at the University of Texas.”

On Augie helping with the process...

"I would certainly value his input on individuals, trends, history,” Perrin said. “He’s a master of the game, so I value his opinion in all things.”

Scratch Arrington off the list...He can't win the big one.........even when in the cat bird seat his teams blow it. We don't need to reach Omaha only to lose year after year......

I hope that's not a dig at Gus.

Gus coached 29 years at UT, with 17 CWS appearances, 3 CWS runnerup, 2 CWS titles. So, Gus was only 2-3 in championship games.

A similar, stoic head coach in the region, a fellow UT alumnus and athlete like Gus, Tom Landry coached the Cowboys for 29 years. Over a 20-year span of winning seasons, his team only missed the playoffs 2 years, lost the final games of those 20 years to the Green Bay Packers in the NFL title game twice (back to back), won 2 Super Bowls, and lost 3 Super Bowls. Landry was only 2-5 in championship games.

I'll gladly take a coach of the high consistency and caliber of those two gentlemen, even if getting there just about every year doesn't result in the trophy with high frequency.

There was only one Rod Dedeaux and only one John Wooden.

I, for one, will happily take another Disch, Falk, Gustafson or Augie. I hope our athletic department is hard at working finding another one of them.

I don't see why O'Connor would take the job. Yes, he is from Omaha and saw us visit there many years in June. He faces academic difficulties that we do not have in Austin. He is set for life there with a clueless school president and an AD that grabs his ankles every time Swofford sneezes. Basically NO outside interference.

While I'ev never found a decent much less exceptional restaurant in Albemerle COunty, and service is lacking in every area, it is beautiful. Lots of famous people love living there, with the newest resident being Matthew McConaughey.

He has an excellent quality of life and no pressure. He can make a run every year in the ACC. Will he exchange that for the demands and expectations of Austin? I don't think so.

Mike has to call to gauge his interest, and he should listen. Just not sure the family will go along.

I recommend the Bavarian Chef, though I am not sure it is in Albemerle County :). Charolettsville is beautiful, so I don't know why he would leave. Bird nest on the ground as my father-in-law would say.

I don't know who we need to go get for baseball but we need to go get Shiner High School's softball coach to replace Connie !!!!!!!!!!!! He knows McCombs very well. Always there. LaGrange High coach ain't half bad either....

Did you guys see that head fake? What a move to talk about something completely out of left field, thanks for the head fake, wow, I have to go back and pickup my jock!!!! smh

It's going to be Kevin O'Sullivan from Florida, and he's a great one and perfect for the job. He comes from the Jack Leggett of Clemson coaching tree that has also produced Tim Corbin among others, and he did the exact thing at Florida that he needs to do here. Florida was 28-29 when he came in and had their first losing season in a while and quickly he turned it around into a top-program that is always in the top 5.

The one issue I see is that he relies a lot on his assistants, because they both come from the scouting community and help him recruit and scout talent. I honestly don't think either assistant will come with O'Sullivan to the 40 acres, which means he's going to have to find new recruiters than the one's that he's relied on for the past 9 years.

To me, O'Sullivan is a home run and we can get him. He makes roughly 500k, Florida places zero importance to their baseball program, and their facilities are nothing like the other top-tier SEC programs. He could be another guy that comes in and establishes a legacy for 20+ years like Gus and Augie because he's young and super talented.

Look at the success this guy has had at turning around a program that doesn't have nearly the same facilities or history as Texas and arguably an even smaller recruiting pool than he would have here.

2007 Pat McMahon 29–30
2008 Kevin O'Sullivan 34–24
2009 Kevin O'Sullivan 42–22
2010 Kevin O'Sullivan 47–17 OMAHA
2011 Kevin O'Sullivan 53–19 OMAHA
2012 Kevin O'Sullivan 47–20 OMAHA
2013 Kevin O'Sullivan 29–30
2014 Kevin O'Sullivan 40–23
2015 Kevin O'Sullivan 52–18 OMAHA
2016 Kevin O'Sullivan 50-13 LIKELY OMAHA

Heard over on Shaggy that Sully is staying put. Hope they are wrong. Per Kendall Rogers.

Looks like we may have to go after an assistant coach with a big up side. Everybody is in a bird's nest or getting raises and extensions at places that are winning. We're TEXAS don't mean so much when $$$$$$$ and stability are involved. We will have to offer 2 million to get anyone ( head man ) with any stature.

Easy,

Why $2 million? Consider the position:

1) You don't know who your boss is going to be

2) Your boss' boss doesn't know squat about athletics

3) The guy you're replacing is apparently making calls to prospective candidates. Will he be hanging around constantly looking over your shoulder?

4) It is one of the two most storied programs in NCAA history, so everyone expects major success no later than Texas Independence Day, 2017.

Piece of cake, right? Sorry, people, there are HS districts in Texas tougher than the American Conference.

David Pierce of Tulane's name has popped up, and I would have to imagine he would jump at an opportunity to coach at UT. He's a guy that has a lot of Texas ties and grew up in TX I believe, and has a solid track record. I feel like he is a 4th or 5th option for the Horns, but this search might turn out to be one where Texas doesn't get the elite guy they target. So far several coaches have used this opportunity to get a big extension.

1) Pierce is married to Gary Kubiak's sister

2) Grew up in Houston and went to St Pius

3) Went to juco & third ward

4) Assistant to Wayne Graham for nine years with two years under Raynor in the mix

5) Three years at Sam

His assistants have been with him for a long time, so he must be easy to work for. Like I posted above, there are HS districts in Texas with stiffer competition than the American Conference.

If our job falls that far down the food chain, lots more is wrong in Bellmont than we expected. Pay the money to the coach or use it to cover the lost revenue? Get the money and get one of the top three!

We're TEXAS just doesn't carry the wt it used to. Other schools have caught up to Texas in all areas. Add to that people these days don't give a rat's butt about tradition and historical programs....and you get coaches getting pay raises to equal what Augie was getting at places with less pressure. When you are an established coach, getting $700K- a million a year, a few K more isn't worth the headache of rebuilding a program.

Our only hope is to go the route Florida did and hire an up and comer, unless we are crazy enough to break the bank for a spring sport....

I say give Skip the job and see what he can do...or Spike Owens......
Or go get a JUCO coach....Iowa Western's coach is a proven winner...It worked for Rice.

If it was going to be Spike (who is at the top end of the age bandwidth for a rookie HC) he would have already been hired. No reason to go to Iowa when the coach at SanJac is equal to or better.

I would say they either feel they have their guy and are waiting until his current team is out, or Sabre's assessment of Belmont's capabilities and plan is spot on.

Wasted nerves and nonsensical claims about our program not being the upper echelon draw it once was. :rolleyes1:

Texas absolutely still has the pull of an elite powerhouse program and will hire an established, proven major program coach all will be excited about.

I mean really, our likelihood of landing a top tier coach is now fleeting because no progress has happened yet? These very coaches are chasing a title right now. Geez.

How about allowing our AD to actually contact the top targets before tossing them out. Pretty sure they aren't chatting about our position before the day's batting practice.

This.

If O'Sullivan is indeed staying at Florida, why is this being reported by Rogers and not UF or Sully himself? I'll believe this once I see an official press release.

This may be one of those cases where they "agreed in principle", but when Texas comes knocking with a 7-figure offer, UFCU DFF, LHN, and a loyal fan base, things change.

The new coach is someone whose team is playing in a super regional. Otherwise an announcement would have already been made.

I know there are other legitimate factors here, but if I have a contract that guarantees me $2 mil at a good school I might not be too concerned with the boss situation.

Rebuilding a program? Someone posted on another baseball thread that the Horns were loaded, losing only one starter.

Doesn't sound like rebuilding to me.

Did you look at our record and offensive and defensive stats ? Losing only one starter may not be a good thing.

The Tulane coach has Texas ties, learned from one of the best in Wayne Graham, proven winner in elevating SHSU and Tulane baseball.......He would not be a bad choice since he would NOT turn us down, and we wouldn't have to pay him as much as we paid Augie until he actually earned it by winning here.

I agree. Just noting what another poster had floated up in defense of keeping Augie.

"Good news, we're getting everyone back next year. Bad news, we finished at the bottom of the league."

or

"We may be small, but we're slow."

Or something like that. No argument here.
