They just need to play better
Where are all the PC/race-baiting accusers who vilified Texas for firing Charlie and touted his coaching acumen and the success he'd have at USF??
Not only are they silent...they've forgotten who CS is because he is no longer useful to their "cause".

West Mall is the place to explore this question

Re: Charlie.

Obviously he was in way over his head at UT. IMHO, the ideal match for him would have been Baylor. His coaching limitations aside, Charlie was all about running a clean ship off the field, and he demanded that his players respect women (which presumably includes not gang-raping them...). While Rhule is a better football coach and likely to build back their football success to some degree, Charlie would have cleaned house with Baylor's horrendous off-the-field %$&# and helped to restore Baylor's terribly tarnished brand as a school and as an institution.

Perhaps the powers-that-be at Baylor these days prioritize on-field football success over the integrity of their school and institution. Unfortunately, that doesn't surprise me at this point at Rape U.

Charlie could have done nothing about "the real problem" in McLennan County. As a Baptist, I have said multiple times that Baylor needed/needs to kick everyone but Joel Gregory to the curb. Bring in Daniel Vestal as Chancellor, Randall O'Brien as President, and start instilling integrity at Baylor, integrity that has been missing for 30 years.

Dion, as usual is right on this one.

I think I saw both of them manning a booth on the actual West Mall, as opposed to virtual West Mall I access here.

Perhaps because none of these are the direct cause of $200+ million coming into the athletic department
Because they aren't risking life and limb to bring in billions of dollars to the school?
Because nobody tunes in or goes to the game to see "what's his name" holding on to Bevo's harness?
Tom Herman doesn't play. He shouldn't be getting paid?
Ticket takers, security, concessions, referees, they're not what we came to see. Don't pay them either. And make sure not to pay the construction workers building the new south end zone. No one turns on the TV to watch construction workers.

Waiters don't cook food. Don't pay them.
Teachers don't build schools. Don't pay them.
Firefighters don't drill wells and provide life-saving water. Don't pay them.
Managers don't create anything. Don't pay them.
Advertisers don't make a product, they only market it. Don't pay them.

For essentially any given product, there are lots of people involved. Some more than others.

Good point that degradation starts at the top.

I don't think risking life and limb was the point of his comments. How's the atmosphere in the stadium without all of those peoples role? The atmosphere plays a big part in why I go to games, of course the biggest part is the game, but everyone plays a role. I suggest fewer people attend games and less interest in the sport in general without the pomp and circumstance that goes along.

Imagine the team walking down Bevo Blvd without the handlers marching Bevo or no band playing or no cheerleaders amping everyone up. Quite frankly if the players just walked through the crowd that would be boring. It certainly wouldn't be TV worthy.

Or hey, we just scored a TD, but there's no band to play Texas fight. Yeah, we scored! Ok, what now?

We were specifically speaking of students/student athletes.

Ohhhhhhhhhh, so if you're a student, your time isn't valuable.
Unless you're an athlete. Then it really, REALLY is.

I was confused. This clears it up.

Yes, this is precisely what I meant. How many people would go to the game if that's all it was? Without any other entertainment, it's essentially no different from watching a practice. A lot less people would go. And if students never bothered attending a game in person, they'll grow up to be people who don't bother watching a game on TV.

The athletic department owes a lot of their revenue to the spirit organizations.

I shall alert Bellmont to get prepared for the expected dip in attendance. What do you think, maybe 95,000 down to 94,500?

The cheerleaders have been neutralized by the Jumbotron. Pom squad gets one 3 minute routine. The band does get pregame at home, which is nice, but they also have lost to the Jumbotron and our WWF wannabe announcer.

As I've said, these kids work hard, and I appreciate that, but outside their families, NO ONE is paying to see them, otherwise there would be a college band and college cheer/dance competition that would require the Super Dome or Neyland Stadium to fit everyone in and scalpers would be having a field day with tickets.

Alright, you're one of the ones that would pay $100+ to attend an open practice. I'm sure some would.
But if you removed literally everything from the field except the players, the attendance would go down by more than 0.5% (unless the tickets suddenly became a lot cheaper), and the same would eventually happen to TV viewership.

If you've ever clapped along during Texas Fight, sang The Eyes of Texas, or smiled when you saw Bevo, then in some small way, you've gone to a game to see the spirit organizations.

You forgot teared up when you see Freddie's picture or touched his plaque walking out.

I have done all that plus sung The Eyes of Texas at sporting events when there was no band.

Bottom line, NONE of this peripheral stuff exists, including the stadium, without the money brought in by the gladiators on the field risking life and limb.
We're talking about students marketing themselves.
If a handler for Bevo or a piccolo player in the band can market themselves then more power to them.

Seriously though, you're right. That said, the peripheral stuff exists and matters. We could play the "if not for..." game with almost anything.

If not for cooks, waiters can't deliver food. Don't pay them!
If not for lumberjacks, writers wouldn't have paper on which to print their books. Don't pay them!
If not for cameramen, actors can't be in movies. Don't pay them!

Now if a waiter can get paid for listening to people ordering food, without delivering food, then more power to them.

And so on.

Kent Hance fired him to save a $1,000,000. How much has that firing cost Tech in recognition, endorsements, prestige for it's football program?

I proposed to a friend from Tech (both he and his father were student body presidents) that Tech erect statues of Hance & James, preferably close to a dog park.

Baseball players play catch.
Football players experience the equivalent of a car crash on a daily basis.

And, again, we're not talking about "paying" anyone.
We're discussing allowing those with marketability to prifit from that.
If a cheerleader, or Bevo handler can do that then more power to them.

At the very least they should be able to profit from their name and likeness. If they want to make a little extra cash being an Instagram model or whatever they do on social media and YouTube by all means go for it.

My issue, even though this makes a lot of sense, is that it would be a distinction without a difference. People with money want their schools to do well, and would want to play players to attend, and could just pay them for their likeness instead of paying for playing.

I think it would be easy enough to ban schools from doing this.
Of course some booster might buy 1000 jerseys with said players number on it.
Some would get caught, some wouldn't.
But boosters already buy momma a house and such.

And is there really a big difference in this then, say, Ricky making millions from pro baseball while keeping his eligibility on the football field?
