Random Off-Season News

Yeah, this kid’s got some attitude—no doubt about it.

BUT

From what’s been reported, this is classic mountain-out-of-a-molehill territory. The headlines are spinning it like he committed a serious crime. Reality check: he got into a petty argument with a store clerk, got frustrated, and walked out with his key fob to prove some dumb point. Immature? Sure. Criminal mastermind? Hardly.

The cop had choices.----- Return the fob. -----Write a ticket.------------ De-escalate like a rational human being. Instead, they went full throttle and slapped cuffs on him. Seriously?

Let’s be honest: if today’s standards existed back when we were growing up, half of us would’ve been career criminals by 15.
I pooped because this is how thievery gets started. Small stuff today, bigger stuff later on, etc.. He needs punishment now and counseling after the punishment to maybe avoid jail time later on in his life.

I wasn't sure
So he stole the product he tried to buy with his credit card and took the clerks key fob. Did he drive off with clerks car?
What was he buying at 7am in the smoke shop
Johntay could use some good advice
He needs help.

To be fair. This was all about NIL. We simply outbid Ga.
And right there is why I don't get excited about recruiting 'gets' any longer. I'm glad he's here and hope he succeeds. But give me a kid like Ehlinger or Arch that has child photos throwing up Horns and wearing a burnt orange jersey and calls this his dream school.

I know, I know. This is the new NIL age. We're offering big bucks and sponsor deals instead of a Texas diploma nowadays.

Kids that grow up Longhorn fans and are also talented enough to put on the jersey are few and far between. We might be able to fill 10-15 spots on the roster with those kids. I’ll take a talented kid who chooses us because we put together a good package any day of the week provided Sark believes they have the right character to fit in the locker room.

I’m extremely happy we are organized enough to use NIL to our advantage. There is a perfect case study 90 miles east of Austin of what happens when you don’t have your 💩 together all the way down from the BOR to the AD to the entire staff.

I don't disagree with you and if they produce on the field I'll be just as happy with the results. It's just the money aspect that turns me off these days.

Totally agree on the aggy comparison. I can't wait to compare our #1 2025 class with their #1 2022 class, or what's left of it.

IT saying they'd "bet heavily against" Texas putting on a spring game in April.

At least not something televised or open to the public.

I have a better idea - move the whole team to an isolated pacific island. That would teach those meddlers and interlopers!

It’s like they’re the sports equivalent of mercenaries. (And yeah, I know this is nothing new.) And thanks to The Portal, if they don’t like life as a Longhorn they can cast off the Burnt Orange jersey (or the Stormtrooper Whites) and don some other color, just like that. Yippee.

If you do not think this mess is out of hand this should convince you.
In the movie "Hunt for Red October," actor Fred Thompson's character, Captain Grafton looked out across the ocean and stated, "This business will get out of hand and it will kill us all!"

A little dramatic as applied to this situation, but apropos nonetheless.

I have pretty much quit paying attention to the NFL because it is IMO a bad product. Will we see an eventual melding of the college game and pro game into one? If not, then where will the line be drawn?

Sooner or later (hopefully sooner), some ruling body is going to have to put some limits on the Portal. It's essentially become unlimited free agency for the players - even the NFL doesn't allow this much. If I were king of college football, I would start with two simple rules for the portal:
(1) A player may enter the portal once as an undergraduate.
(2) If a player graduates from his current college and still has athletic eligibility remaining, he may have one shot at the portal as a Graduate Transfer.
That would put some reasonable limits on the portal.

At some point, there are schools bleeding money that will do away with football as a varsity sport. They won't be able to justify the cost.

I doubt that will happen, but I do have a feeling there will be a major divide where the NCAA is gone and schools separate into minor and major financial players. Not sure what that would look like, but any small school trying to pay players now can't compete so they go back to the scholarship only days plus a small stipend knowing their best players will leave regardless so why even try.

Money or lack there of, drives everything. It should not take much longer in this economy to shake out the weak hands, then the ncaa will go the way of the dinosaurs and the big schools will have their regulating body. Hopefully.

Once Texas wins the next 2 NC’s under Arch as QB, rules will be enacted since everyone hates Texas.

HHD, get this propossed, passed and enforced and see how fast this problem goes away!
