Pelini Bros. Bitchfest as reported in Omaha

one thing i have not heard and hope that someone who was there can report on was what kind of replay the megavideo board showed of that last pass play. did it clearly show that the clock still had time when the ball hit?

i am very leery of that place, and, between whoever allowed the clock to run and whoever showed the replay, it wouldn't surprise me if not enough was shown to make it clear to people.

i remember way back there when woody hayes cold-cocked that linebacker after the interception ended ohio state's chance to come back in that game. we saw it live on television as plain as day. the commentators kept saying they didn't understand what the big deal was and why there was a penalty even. they kept replaying the play, but every time the video stopped when the kid went out of bounds, and the hayes misadventure that ended his career occurred moments later. i kept yelling at the tv (smart, wasn't i? i haven't improved) to show the rest of the play, and i surmised that the announcers were trying to cover for hayes. i do think someone in charge was trying to hide what happened, but i realized later that the booth guys watch the action live and they never saw what we saw live on tv. it never did get shown again during that broadcast.

Because the officials called for a review so quickly I don't think Jerry's minions had time to show the replay in the stadium. (Once review was called for, I think it's against the rules to replay it in the stadium.)

i believe you are right, eme, but after the kick or while the timeout was going on, they could have shown it. it wouldn't surprise me in the least if jerry's people chose not to.

i don't recall them playing it, but at that moment there seemed to be so much chaos and confusion I wasn't paying attention to that Texas-sized video screen

perhaps the timeout was too short to show it. they really needed to show it repeatedly after the game. if not, they are as shameful as those people who kept showing the blount knockdown over and over, driving that crowd toward a really ugly situation.

i wonder if the tv people didn't make that available to the stadium people. that wouldn't surprise me, either.

Bo and Carl got caught up in the emotion. It happens. For the most part, it was all outside the press and media. Bo voted Texas #1.

Case now closed. Time to move on.

I never saw a replay at the stadium. But I also never doubted there was time on the clock. I thought there was 2 seconds, and so did most around us....even the Husker fans.

It is good to know osborne called Mack. Where did you hear or read that? I haven't seen it but it is something Osborne would do.

Bo's outburst is understandable and forgiven. Carl's? A coach screams at the kids on the other team? Unless he apologizes too this won't be forgotten anytime soon.

Carl probably won't make amends, but maybe I'm wrong. Seems like if he knew he was wrong he would promptly admit it. That's his character defect, and mine is being judgmental. Ha! I think Bo P is responsible for his staff and therefore is the one who should step up to admit the wrong. This Nebraska team is a good team and their effort and tremendous game (by the defense) is honorable. Not so with the p's. Yet.

This thread is priceless. The Omaha World-Herald has a running feud with the Nebraska Athletic Dept. This began earlier this season when the OWH Sport Editor decided the paper could pump up readership with a TMZ-like approach to it's sports pages. This culminated in a very public battle between NU OC Shawn Watson and "sportswriter" Dirk Chatelain. The OWH has taken a negative slant in every way on their coverage of Nebraska football this year. So, it's no surprise that they'd publish garbage like this.Did the events happen? Yes. Did they occur exactly how they are described? Does anyone think Osborne would purposely refuse to shake the hand of Beebe, especially when that hand shake could easily be used to whisper the request in Beebe's ear?

Bo P. was pissed. To go from pulling off the improbably upset to losing is tough, especially for a guy who wears his emotions on his sleeve. Each of the quotes above were made in "private" to Osborne, Beebe and company. They were published because a sportswriter and camera were literally chasing Pelini around on the field knowing how explosive he is. Watch the postgame PC on the B12 official site. Pelini was nothing but gracious in the loss. The first
question of the PC was about the final of the game and whether he felt it was correct and Pelini sidestepped the question, rightfully.

Now, to put this in context from a Nebraska perspective there was a point where the 'skers were at a 2-1 penalty disadvantage against B12 South teams. In fact, there was HUGE disparity when looking at how much the B12 South penalized compared to the B12 North in intra-division games. The B12 and UT '73 grad and B12 head of officiating Walt Anderson has been alerted to this. Yes, that screams of conspiracy theory but if the shoe were on the other foot I'd imagine UT fans would be at least a little bit receptive to the idea that the conference is dominated by Nebraska. Getting an explanation for a rule as ambiguous as "egregious" from a UT grad is tough to stomach.

Nebraska screwed themselves with the kickoff and the horsecollar. Was the final call the right call? Yes. Were there many
other bad calls throughout the game that impacted both teams? Yes. None of that made any Husker fans feel any better in the moments following the game.

As someone else stated, Pelini put UT #1 in his Coaches poll vote so is really THAT much of a jackass?

Just wait till next year and you'll see the same fiery temperment on the sideline. Personally, I think Nebraska needed that fire coming off the Callahan years. Osborne's predecessor Bill Devaney was fiery. Pelini is the right man for the Nebraska program in it's current state and I wouldn't trade him for any other coach, including Mack Brown (serious statement).

So Seattle, what say ye about Carl's screaming at out team? Did that happen? If so, should he apologize?

As mentioned above, that seems to be the only open issue here - at least to me.

Yes, I think he should but I didn't read that he was screaming at the UT team. He was screaming in the tunnel and I've also read it wasn't Carl Pelini but Vince Pelini, another of the Pelini brothers that isn't an employee of the University of Nebraska.
(Bo Pelini is the youngest of 12
siblings.)

You didn't see Mack Brown throw a fit when we lost to Tech on the final play. Texas has class Nebraska had class.

I don't give a one DAMN wild hog's rib about apologies, conspiracies, PR spin, coaching clique consults on game planning, perceived slights, post-game emotion, fan reaction, media bias, missed calls, dropped balls, Heisman votes, reception in Lincoln next year, Aggy tirades or any of the other complete ******** that has entered the retarded (don't care about political correctness, either) internet dialogue about this game that I am now contributing to. All that matters is that WE ARE PLAYING FOR THE NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP ON 1-7-2010. Let's rally around this team, show up in full force in Pasadena, and mudhole the Tide. See you there.

It's not surprising that the Pelini brothers were bent about the outcome of the game...it's like somebody putting the thickest, juiciest t-bone steak in front of you, then pulling it away before you get your first bite. Mack didn't pitch a hissy fit last year after the
Tech game, but then he's not as outwardly emotional as the Pelinis.

To me, Bo Pelini showed he is a standup guy by voting UT number one in the coaches poll after the game's ending wore off. UT has pretty much had their way with the Huskers since the Big XII was formed, so it's understandable that Husker fan wouldn't be ecstatic about Texas winning out and going to the championship game...any more than UT's fans were excited about seeing zero-u in it last year.

While I'm not too freaked out by the Pelini brothers' actions after the game, I don't think "fiery" coaches do their teams a favor in the long run. Sure it can provide short term motivation, but an extremely reactionary coach ultimately leads to a lower performing team in my opinion. Pelini is obviously this type of coach.
