Olympics

Yes it’s sports. It happens. Some compete and others quit. It’s the difference between champions and 2nd place. You can’t win every game or every time. But you don’t just quit. We are amidst a society of quitters.

Well, Biles career is over. No one will place their faith in a quitter. This is the same society that quit on law enforcement over bogus claims about thugs who were resisting arrest. Where are you, Joe DiMaggio?

If you all want to call her a quitter, that's fine. She did quit. You can call her a coward, and yes I've lamented the wussificstion of America and stand by that criticism. Here's the problem. Being brave doesn't mean being reckless. If she's not mentally capable of competing, she shouldn't be trying. It's too big of a risk for something that simply isn't that consequential. It's easy for a bunch of old dudes to give her crap about it while we're scratching our asses on the couch. How many of us would really take an elevated risk a broken neck for this?

I also reject the parallel to the military. Someone who has joined the military knows the expectation is that he put his life on the line to fulfill his duty. Furthermore, he's doing so for a very important reason - to protect his nation, its freedoms, and its people. None of that applies to an Olympic athlete.

I didn’t and haven’t watched the Olympics, so didn’t see Biles performance. I will remember her for what she has done.

Soft? Really? Says you lying on the couch with one hand on your crotch and the other holding a Natural Light. When have you ever for even 10 minutes worked as hard, been so singularly focused, sacrificed so much, endured such criticism bordering on abuse, not to mention actual abuse, to develop world class perfection? Soft? Piss off.

What she is describing is the Yips - apparently they call it the twisties in gymnastics - a psychologically based performance disorder. We know this well from golf or those old enough to remember what happened to Dodger Steve Sax when he suddenly could not complete a simple toss from his second base position to first. The consequence to a PGA golfer is that he misses easy putts and loses his tour card. The consequence to Steve Sax was he threw errantly and lost his place in the lineup. The potential consequence to Simone Biles’ misunderstanding her proprioceptive position in space as she hurls and flips and twists through the air is severe injury, paralysis, or even death. Seems prudent to recognize that and apply the brakes.

And, can we just be decent and practice empathy rather than derision? Now would be a great time to get that going.

Of course, it starts with an insult.

You are deliberately ignoring the real issue and that is the Liberal culture of enabling these things including protecting women at all costs. I don't care one bit about your friends experiences. We all have participated in sports and face pressure at work in big meetings and the like. We are not crumbling.

It's not that Simone deserves to be beaten up per se. But we are seeing the political protection slam down like an anvil and because of that, it opens Simone up to greater scrutiny. This is purely about image and women in sports. Osaka has also collapsed under pressure and it's paramount for feminists to cover for them.

That's what I'm talking about here.

You have a <strike>stiffie </strike> blindspot and see everything through some "liberals/dems suck" lens. Sorry.

I don't know who's politicizing Simone, but it's BS and shouldn't have any bearing on how we judge her. None of that is her fault.

I understand it's not her fault. I'm talking about the reactions we see on and on and on enabling everything. They are rushing in to protect her just like they did with Osaka. But that's it for me on this. I said my piece.

Simone is the greatest ever. She is an amazing young lady. She also quit like Roberto Duran quit.

I don't know what we're supposed to think, but amongst all the men I've known, quitting was one of those things that prompted a Deguello-like response.

CNN Headline: white girl* wins gold over POC who dropped out due to stress from racism

*Asians are white now since they make more money than European whites in America.
See, I followed that link and did a search on "white" and got 0/0. Odd, huh...

If more football players at all ages would tell the truth about "getting dinged a little" we might have less CTE. Maybe we men should un-man up a little.

No question that coaches were psycho's over the years. Think about the Junction Boys. Many quit. The one's who gutted it out wear it like a badge of honor.

All sports is voluntary. It's no secret that football is violent. Everybody knew it all along. Boxing is violent. But like mountain climbers and sky divers, it's not for health; it's because it's there. So people do what they do.

But enabling quitting is a disease. It should not be lauded as courageous or brave.

That's my take.

I can attest to that as a Youth football coach ~5-10 years ago. There are some kids that refused to admit they were hurt, specifically when their "bell was rung". One kids in particular, a super fast inner city kid, would have tears in his eyes after not backing down from the baddest dude on the team for fear that it represented weakness. I loved that kid but wish he would have felt more comfortable to be honest with me after helmet to helmet contact. Instead, our staff had to guess.

Keri Strugg is revered for her performance in the 80's Olympics in which she badly injured her ankle in the vault and returned for a 2nd vault to land on 1 leg. After Biles pulled out she applauded her. Dominique Moceanua (sp?) performed on a broken leg when she was 14. She claimed she never had the option of a personal choice to compete or not. As adults, shouldn't the individual be able make a decision on whether they are healthy enough or not to compete? It certainly shouldn't be a couch spectator that makes that decision.

Again, fault Biles for not realizing earlier that she wasn't healthy enough to compete. That's it.

I don't view taking a head injury seriously as "un-manning up."

That's right and that's not what happened to Simone. She cited mental issues. That will be the new go-to in sports whenever someone fails. You can't diagnose it on the field. You just have to take their word for it.

Slightly switching topics, I hear ESPN will shut down the Longhorn Network once Texas joins the SEC. I have a great idea for ESPN that allows them to save money and for people to keep their jobs. They should rebrand LHN as the BLM network and not change any of the current content or ads. Who would know the difference?

Exactly. Haven't watched in months, really. Stupid *** political **** and SJW commercials, not to mention the same tired *** LHN promos and Longhorn Legends spots.

I know it isn't, and I wouldn't side with Simone if we weren't talking about something as dangerous as gymnastics.

Oh come on. Gymnastics is a physically dangerous activity. It always has been. Show me one example of a women's Olympic gymnast who dropped out during the team finals over the last 100 years because they lost their mental edge and were worried about getting hurt because of it. Just one. And don't give me this "she's doing super dangerous tricks other gymnasts aren't." That's garbage. She's a professional. She's the world champion. Supposedly the GOAT.

Playing football is just as dangerous. The excuses for Biles are pathetic. She quit. She quit. And she's so soft that she's blaming it on mental health? It's insulting to everyone who legitimately has mental health issues.

Obligatory Augie video rant:

Watching gymnastics now. I wonder if it would have been different for Biles if the hall had been filled with fans.

That's actually a very good point. It's not the same performing to an empty room. That said, these are pretty much pros. They practice in an empty room every single day.

Uh Simone..... you literally stopped. You willfully made the decision to not continue even though you had no injury. You quit. It doesn't matter what your reason was. We call it choking. Sorry. You're still a wonderful person but you choked.
