Olympics

Well, all the gawdamn knee taking has sure quelled the racist white cop killing innocent angel black folks, now hasn't it?

Jesus H Christ almighty.

Well, every female soccer team is supposed to kneel before, or after, the anthems of both teams, based on agreements between the teams who are able. So far, I think they all have.
We didn't kneel during the anthem. I don't recall if it was before or after, but it definitely wasn't during.
They are all kneeling now for equal pay with the men. Who once again couldn't even win enough games to make it to the Olympics.
I love soccer, and played it for several years. It makes me sad to see our team divided. When it was kneeling for racism, not every player knelt.

But, they are treated like second hand citizens in the USA compared to the men.
Our men's team has won squat on the big stage.
The few times they have qualified for the World Cup, they couldn't even make it out of group play. The same for the Olympics.

Yet, they are payed more, fly first class, stay in fancy hotels in single rooms, have a high per Diem when traveling, and will only play on natural grass fields.
They also make a higher salary just for showing up.
Our women have won several World Cups, Gold medals at the Olympics, and overall, on the international stage have totally outperformed our men.
Yet, they fly coach, share rooms at Holiday Inns, play on everything from dirt, Astro turf, to occasional grass, and when they win, they make much less per player than the men if the men merely make it to the World Cup, never mind the results. They make less for winning the biggest sports event in the world than the men make for showing up and losing immediately. So I am with them to that point.

However, as far as television dollars, the men's games far outperform the women's.
So, I don't know what the solution is. The women want equal dollars to the men.
In my mind, the powers that be should have 2 scales of pay, one for the big International games, where tons of people watch the women, the women perform and win, and they should reap the rewards financially.
Then, a second scale based on televised games, where the men make more based on advertising dollars, and usual tv metrics.

So, that is why the women are kneeling right now at the Olympics.
It bothers me immensely, as our previous teams have always been very patriotic and played as a united team. I don't even know if we will make it out of our group play this Olympics. We are playing horribly, and even if we make it to the "one and done" rounds, we will play a #1 seeded team, most likely Brazil who will beat us like a rug unless something radically changes.

So, several of you will be happy. I won't, I can't help it.

You are correct that some will be happy. They can’t help it. More seriously, I wish there was a private market solution where they could be happier. Regardless their antics tick off a lot of would be supporters.

Kneeling is going to mean equal pay? Okay.

Female golfers don't earn as much either. Unfortunately, it has to do with TV money and attendance. I like the LPGA. I tune in and we have been to 2 tourmanmets that were in our area.

Kneeling for equal pay is...stupid. Sorry.

You're purposely murkying the waters between private sector pay (MLS v. NWSL) and the "public sector" (the men's and women's national team). If you didn't know the difference then you're dense. You're not dense.

Ah, that's true. Anyway, I think kneeling in protest is a dense way to bring attention to that if that is really the case, especially in light of what kneeling has come to symbolize.

Either make a stand, so to speak, by refusing to play for less money, or shut up and play.

Besides the obvious..."it is entertainment and thus market driven". You can also put into the justification bucket....Women's Soccer is about 10% as competitive as Men's. They didn't even have a Cup until 1991. They are just now getting to a field of 32 teams. Any nation with a pulse can get into the tourney. They are playing nations that literally keep their women locked down inside the house. The number of professional clubs and junior clubs around the world is about 15 times the number of women's.

If anything the Women's Team success points to a US system that does far more than ANY OTHER NATION IN THE WORLD FOR GIRLS AND WOMEN. These women aren't "wonder woman" with cleats, they have just been able to play on the same fields as the boys and have select teams and college teams in a way that virtually no other nation in the world provides for their young girls.

Yes, US girls/women's soccer is well past the rest of the world. My girl is on a decent club team. Not great. They traveled to Europe and were very salty. They beat and traded punches some professional teams and some national teams. That said, national team pay should be the same. MLS getting more than NWSL? Sure, let the market bear it out. The market is not playing a part in the national team formation.

Yes. Because there is more market demand to watch them live and on TV. The women aren't ever going to be paid as much as the men in this regard. UNLESS, people start wanting to watch them more than the men and are willing to pay more for tickets to attend. It's economics. It isn't treating women as second class citizens. It is a stupid false narrative.

So you think the national team should have the same pay differential that the private sector has?

The situation is still governed by economic law.

The women's national team should be paid according how much money they bring in to the US National Soccer Federation. I think they make a higher % of the money they bring in than the men. But they bring a much much less money. They may be different some day. But it isn't a matter of discrimination or not having the right laws in place. When the economics change the pay scale will change.

except that the real market sets the price for the fake market as well. The government has to pay somewhere on a similar scale as corporations or no one would work for the government. The men's team has to compete with MLS talent so they have to compensate somewhere within reason of MLS pay.

And let's be clear. they didn't actually "make less". For a few years, they made more than the men. what they are griping about is that their contract doesn't give them the same kind of bonus opportunities as the men. Well that's where that old "degree of difficulty" comes into play. The men have a much tougher road to hit their bonus kickers than the women do. That's why the men rarely actually receive any of their possible bonus kickers. The women typically receive all of theirs. ....because their road is ALWAYS much, much easier.

No, let's face it, as woke as the Olympics has become, the organization still just can't get past its natural mistreatment of women. That's just the way it is.

Thank you, Bubba!

Now, back to the fact that the Olympics is flat out boring.

Video of the soccer games:

ESPN is such a garbage organization. Imagine Tom Brady or Aaron Rodgers coming out at halftime of the Superbowl saying "my mental isn't there" and sitting out the second half of the game because they threw 2 INT in the first half and are down 14.

Would ESPN be marking it as a landmark achievement in recognizing mental health over winning?

Get the F out of here. Biles is the greatest female gymnast of our time and she **** the bed then left her team out to dry. Truly pathetic. Unless you rolled your ankle and can't physically compete, get your *** out there and contribute. She better not compete in the individual all around. Pathetic. If she was White Id be saying the same thing. Total garbage.

'You have to be 100%': Why Simone Biles withdrew from the team final

Using that fine logic we should pay female members of congress less than male members of congress.

Man, you are really off. Either that or you are a misogynist, if you really think females should be paid less to do the same job. A Congresswoman performs the same job as a Congressman in the same Congress and therefore is paid the same.

USNWT members play for a team that take in less money than the USNMT. They both get paid what their economic demand entails. Two different teams playing in two different leagues of which sports fans value two different ways.

The women literally refused the same exact contract as the men and insisted on a different contract with guaranteed incentives and payments. Did the women agree to their contract or not?

I feel dirty here, but I think Bubba was being sarcastic to try to make his point.

Didn't the US Women's team lose their court case (I think it was summarily dismissed wasn't it?), as they had themselves chose the terms of their compensation deal with the US Soccer, where they were guaranteed more regardless of outcome, but with a lower overall payout if they did well.

For god's sake, that's like me buying treasury bonds and then suing the Treasure for not paying me the same as if I'd bought Amazon stock.

'You have to be 100%': Why Simone Biles withdrew from the team final

It was pretty bad - the tone of the article was - isn't it great that someone quit during the game - it made them feel good.

Look, it must be a meat grinder competing in the Olympics. But if you're not up for it, then don't try out for it - you've stolen a slot from someone for who it would be a life's dream to just make the team.

Hopefully she either goes home now, or finishes last in all the other events she competes in.

The women's soccer world has caught up to our team, which is a great thing.
I am talking about 2 separate things: International play, where we are struggling right now in the Olympics, and their Leagues in the US, where viewership is minuscule. I think a member of our National Team should be payed equally, and treated equally as the men. They should have the same type hotel accommodations, never play on artificial turf, and fly first class.
Look at the ratings her for the women's World Cup. They were huge.

But as far as League play, let the market set the price. And believe it or not, some people actually watch men's soccer. Not many, but more than the women.
So, in that case, the men should be paid accordingly.

It's ironic, because the women are playing the worst soccer I have ever seen them play. I was lucky enough to play on a select team that played a friendly back in the day with Mia Hamm, Michelle Akers, etc. That team was a true team who played beautiful soccer. Our current team has no chemistry, they look like a bunch of little kids running around without a clue. They aren't doing much to help their cause.
Before 1999 there really wasn't much competition, only China and the Netherlands.
But now, it is different/ Brazil, Australia, Netherlands, Japan, China are all quite competitive. One clue should be that our League players are playing over in Europe instead of here.
