Netanyahu Schooled Obama on the Middle East ...

My father is also older than Israel. He and his family were moved from Iraq to Israel along with 750,000 other Jews from Arab lands, about the same number of Palestinians "displaced" from Israel. My dad's family is very happy to no longer be in Iraq and be in a place where they are free from persecution. There is more than enough land for the Palestinians to live with fellow Palestinians and Muslims. The truth is the Palestinian "refugee problem" is a ruse created by the Arabs to destroy Israel demographically.

Netanyahu is just the kind of cowboy the jingoists in this country love. They prefer a good macho show to any semblence of diploamacy or nuance. It's the adolescent male insecurity that drives too many of our mistaken moves and policies. "I must constantly act tough."

Idiot world. The Israeli leader is an idiot for playing on emotion. He invites his interlocutor to do the same, but Obama will take the high road and not retaliate in kind. Morons will crow that he is weak. Again, idiot world.

Have fun cheering the next foreign leader who comes here to prove he's a jackass. You must love the Venezuelan president.

Israel doesn't behave any more irresponisbly than other countries and its record of tolerance and even handedness is exemplary for that area of the world. We have and should have supported them and will no doubt do so in the future.

But our interests are not always the same and if the president wants to restate a longstanding US position, he should not have to put up with such arrogance from a man trying to cover his own political base. Our interests in that area of the world are not identical to Israel"s. They don[t have the gargantuan thirst for oil that our country does.

I don't really see any point in trying to come to a peace agreement right now. Israel has a government dominated by its junior members, who are religious fanatics, and I don't see any Palestinians around who could cut a deal with them.

Why we are trying to herd this pack of badgers into a common enclosure remains a mystery.

"but I won't force other Americans to sacrifice their lives and fortunes against their will. That would be selfish of me. I'm not as generous with other citizen's lives and money as you evidently think I should be. "

I agree with that completely but frankly I am surprised you feel this way. However I am glad you do feel this way.

Does this also mean you are against most foreign aid?

this issue doesn't seem to require sending citizens of the USA to the region to fight.

I read Obama's speecj to AIPAC today and have a question or anyone here who can help me
Obama said this today
"The Palestinian people must have the right to govern themselves, and reach their potential, in a sovereign and contiguous state. "

Does that mean he thinks Gaza should be connected to the West Bank? If so won't that cut israel in half and it would not be contiguous?

Germany didn't declare war on us. We declared war on them, and I never said we did it because of the Holocaust.

So you didn't answer my question. Are you saying we should not have become involved in the war in Europe? I'm questioning your consistency.

As far as Obama goes, he seems to be a good man but a poor politician. So many liberals have made the mistake of allowing themselves to be defined by their opponents. Bill Clinton was a rare exception. He would never have done what Obama did this week.

It is sad, because Obama has the will to get this issue settled. The Republicans are moronic do-nothings. Always have been.

Interesting questions Horn6721. Most presidents have concluded that the foreign aid we provide IS in the nations interest. Often debatable, though. Our foreign aid budget is large in terms of dollars, but very low as a percentage of GDP, as compared to other nations. It is interesting to see how the "sides" shift when it comes to Israel. People who normally deride foreign policy based upon morality, suddently see the benefit of protecting a liberal democracy (to the extent Israel qualifies) because it is the right thing to do. Compelling arguments can be made that US economic security would be much better served by neutrality in the mideast. Israel has no oil...but you all know the arguments.

Do you have a link showing that your definition of contiguous is the one being used by USA Israel and Palistine?

I had not read that one and would like to learn about it

how do you think obama got elected?

general35,

Are there people you hang out with who think that level of inanity is amusing? My objection isn't to someone criticizing or even zinging Obama; it's the banality that offends me. I guess the irrelevance is mildly annoying, too.

The comment appeared to deviate from earlier stances because it didn't include the previously stated preconditions (abandonment of right of return, recognizing Jerusalem as part of Israel). The only precondition Obama stated was recognition of Israel.

That may be a departure, or it may be just a clumsily, hastily drafted end to a speech in which it didn't fit. There was no reason to raise the issue, except that Obama is afflicted with the psychosis regarding Israel that contaminates the entire academic left from whence he sprang.

Perhaps for a separate thread, but we Zionists need to pull a Frank Luntz and find an alternate word for "settlements." It's concocted to plead the case of the savages and obscure the issue. Arabs can, and do, live in Israel as full citizens (as Bibi said today, the only Arabs in the ME and N. Africa that live in a real democracy live in Israel).

By contrast, the "international community" considers it an offense for Jews to live where Palestinians don't want them to. Judenrein was a bad policy in 1930s and 1940s in Central and Eastern Europe, and it's a bad policy in the Holy Land today.
