The comment appeared to deviate from earlier stances because it didn't include the previously stated preconditions (abandonment of right of return, recognizing Jerusalem as part of Israel). The only precondition Obama stated was recognition of Israel.
That may be a departure, or it may be just a clumsily, hastily drafted end to a speech in which it didn't fit. There was no reason to raise the issue, except that Obama is afflicted with the psychosis regarding Israel that contaminates the entire academic left from whence he sprang.
Perhaps for a separate thread, but we Zionists need to pull a Frank Luntz and find an alternate word for "settlements." It's concocted to plead the case of the savages and obscure the issue. Arabs can, and do, live in Israel as full citizens (as Bibi said today, the only Arabs in the ME and N. Africa that live in a real democracy live in Israel).
By contrast, the "international community" considers it an offense for Jews to live where Palestinians don't want them to. Judenrein was a bad policy in 1930s and 1940s in Central and Eastern Europe, and it's a bad policy in the Holy Land today.
