Not happy we lost and certainly Herman made some mistakes. I would say the loss is primarily on our cornerback #3, then a big chunk on Herman and then finally a small bit on Ingram.
This season we need our secondary to VASTLY improve. I am not excited to face Okie State, OU or Baylor with our current cornerback situation. Those games will be shootouts that could go either way without improvement.
Long term, to become an elite coach like Nick Saban, Bob Stoops, Mack Brown, Urban Meyer, Jim Tressel, etc, Herman has to get better at clock management and in game decision making (when to kick field goals, when to go for it, CLOCK MANAGEMENT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!, when to onside kick, etc). I wish Herman had tried to drain clock more in the first half and sped it up more in the 4th quarter. I have noticed in general, the past 10 years that clock management among coaches seems to have fallen off throughout college football. Almost everyone seems to manage the clock like Les Miles now, and I do not know why. If I learned anything from the Mack Brown era, it is that you can win a lot of games with great clock management (see all the numerous 4th quarter comebacks).
Also, I am not beating up on the guy and he had a fantastic second half, but I really wish Ehlinger was a more accurate as a passer. Our receivers may actually be the best we have ever had. They just need passes to be slightly closer to them. Ehlinger looked sharp against La Tech, but not as sharp today. He has improved greatly overall and continues to improve overall, so I am hopeful his accuracy will continue to improve.
Honestly, I am not extremely upset because this is still 1,000 times better than the Charlie Strong era. At some point the high of not going into games completely hopeless and actually being competitive will wear off. For now though, I am happy that I know we are (1) going to a good bowl, like it is not a question of "if" we make a bowl; (2) could still win the Big XII; and (3) the program is moving in the right direction right now long term.
Also, I think I am in a good mood I decided not to spend the money and did not attend this game in person missing the heat and commercials! (This is a big statement since I missed only a handful of homes games from the early 90s until this 2019 season). I'll be at Okie State and OU though and hope we win those shootouts. I think we can outscore Okie State (will be tough), but I am very worried about OU right now. Anyway, hope we get revenge on LSU next year!
