I have no idea.Sangre
Didn't the Demx block new refineries that might have been built to handle the fracked stuff?
You are conflating petroleum products with crude oil. The 20m figure includes bio ethanol, natural gas liquids, etc.No, the US consumes roughly 20MMbpd of oil. In late 2019, we peaked at 13MMbpd of production. Furthermore, we export a lot of our crude because most of our refineries were not designed for the light crudes that comes from most US shale reservoirs.
Short-Term Energy Outlook - U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA)
There is more to petroleum than just “crude oil”. There are natural gas liquids (many millions of barrels per day) and bioethanol (although not a petroleum based product, it is included in petroleum products).I actually work in Upstream but understand enough about Downstream to be dangerous. Light and heavy refer to the density or API of the crude (light is low density, heavy is high density). From a high level, heavier crudes have higher molecular weight, low volatility components that end in bottom of the crude unit, vacuum distillation, etc. The lighter crudes have a large percentage of lighter components that end up choking the overhead of the crude unit. If your plant is not designed for the lighter crudes, you will hit a plant "bottleneck" or limit quicker and therefore make less liquids.
Sour just refers to sulfur content. Most refineries use hydrotreaters to convert organic sulfur components to H2S (which is removed using amines and Claus process). This allows for high sulfur crudes to be meet tight sulfur specs while increasing liquid yields.
So different types of crudes have different blends of molecules that go to different parts of the plant. That's an over-simplistic explanation but you get the point.
We are conflating many issues. The point being made here is that refineries can produce more gasoline if it used the right mix of crude. This is independent of whether the US is energy independent. Thus, to maximize refinery throughput, it makes sense to export light crude and import heavy crude. Separately the US exports gasoline to many of the same countries it buys crude. Why? Because it is cheaper to ship gasoline overseas when pipelines to other parts of the US are either full or nonexistent.I'm getting the idea that treating different classes of crude requires a lot more than retooling one production line at a refinery.
Still, seems to me we should have a more robust refinery capacity in the USA to handle the primary type of crude produced here.
EDIT: Thank you for taking the time to provide the explanation.
Thanks, that makes sense. You are conflating petroleum products with crude oil. The 20m figure includes bio ethanol, natural gas liquids, etc.
Don't you love being penalized by places like this when pulling up in a fossil fuel, also known as normal, vehicle and you are relegated to spots further away? Every shopping center, etc., is woke and on board or they will be canceled somehow. When I go to my local regional airport and see 4 spaces open but reserved for electric cars only, I know this transition will take many, many years. In November, we will see that most Americans have no appetite for the transition.
What frustrates me about that sort of situation is I TRY to park way the hell away...not so I can get exercise but so some numbnuts doesn't slam their door into whichever car I was driving that day. THEN...it never fails that I come out and someone chose to park right NEXT to me when there were a dozen or so spaces at a minimum closer to the door.Don't you love being penalized by places like this when pulling up in a fossil fuel, also known as normal, vehicle and you are relegated to spots further away? Those people were not properly adjusted by the other neighborhood kids. What frustrates me about that sort of situation is I TRY to park way the hell away...not so I can get exercise but so some numbnuts doesn't slam their door into whichever car I was driving that day. Alternately...some rusted out crap-box like you typically see on blocks next to the house...also on blocks.Mb I agree completely and it’s usually some big truck!!
SD squared.About to leave the office for the day.... have not heard or read any news.
So, has Joe or anyone his admin done ANYTHING positive today to fight inflation, help the economy or the American people?
Or is it just a day Joe is just busy "acting" Presidential, publicly trashing the SCOTUS when given the opportunity and generally shuffling around the G 7 Summit?
If Chance the Gardener gets his gas tax holiday how will we be able to keep our highway infrastructure up, given that we wont collect the taxes to pay for it for several months? Maybe the feds will print some more money and give it to the states to do the roads? Those guys are so creative. I used to think Biden was a half wit but his octane level is so low now I don't see how he can even get out of the garage.

She went to school when biology was still a thing and apparently actually paid attention...or, alternately, she just knows she didn't have what Willie could offer. She's not a biologist. How does she know that?
