For Real ....Herman “IS” Done!!!

This is from the time machine -- after the loss to Maryland

Texas, Herman said Monday, was like the simple but brutish Lennie from Steinbeck's classic "Of Mice and Men." The Longhorns tried so hard to win that they killed their chance to do it.

"Lennie wanted so badly to touch the rabbit and play with the rabbit -- he squeezed it so hard, he killed the rabbit," Herman said, noting he told linebacker Gary Johnson to read the book. "I know that seems maybe out there a little bit. I think that's what the first quarter was. We wanted it so badly, we got in our own way quite a bit."

Herman mangled the analogy a bit. In the novel, Lennie kills a puppy, a mouse and a woman and only dreams of rabbits. And Lennie gets killed at the end.

But at 7-7 over his first 14 games at Texas, too many more losses could prompt lectures on other Steinbeck titles, such as the "The Grapes of Wrath" or "The Winter of Our Discontent."

"This one game will not define us. How we grow from it and respond to it will," Herman said.

Huh. Who? Not Saban or Dabo - why leave an existing dynasty to rebuild.
No thanks to Kelly or Smart.
Cristobal is pretty unproven. He was fired as a head coach just a few years ago.
Who is left? Campbell has been discussed ad nauseam.

I’ll bet the master list has perhaps ten names, both from the NFL and college, and includes HCs and assistants. Then there’s probably a more focused target list, narrowing it down to perhaps two or three. This, aside from Meyer, who might say “no” twenty times...before he says yes.

Back to assistants and as noted previously, Stoops was an assistant, Sweeney was an assistant, Smart was an assistant... There have to be a few assistants out there waiting to become the next great HC.

Here’s a wild card: Pete Carroll. Track record. Moved past his issues at USC. A charmer that can manage the job.

While he’s not young, perhaps he might be interested in Austin as a final destination. We could do worse.

Well, coming from a dumbass perspective, one would think that if TH was DEFINITELY the head coach for 2021, they would have that statement prepared and released by now.

"To address the rumors of a head coaching blah blah blah..."

But, nothing.
There aren't any rumors except for a pay site, nothing from mainstream media, etc. I hope I'm wrong and he's fired this weekend but there's nothing out there to say that's the case. CDC was asked if his release meant Herman was the coach next season and he said, "Yes" - can't get much clearer than that.

And, like I mentioned on another thread, why would a coach coming here not want to talk to seniors to get them to stay, get transfers before they are all gone (which has pretty much happened already), recruit both for 2021 and 2022, find some Juco transfer, find a freaking coaching staff, etc. Makes no sense and not sure I would want a coach who wants to give away another recruiting class. Seems he's just wanting a big payday for his retirement...

He would be incredible, there's plenty of coaches to choose from, just need an AD to pull the trigger and commit to winning. It's like storming the beaches, one coach doesn't get it done, you send another till you accomplish your goal.

According to Herman and CDC (by lack of action), our goals are now to try to win 70% of games, go to a crappy bowl, and still be in mathmatical contention for a Big 12 championship game in November. Pretty pathetic...

Maybe I just don’t have enough “roll with the ridiculous exaggeration” flexibility to be in an internet site, but this type of statement is nonsense.
So really?? Our “goal” is to win 70% of games and go to a crappy bowl?

can you be specific about the action that CDC should have already taken, and when, making sure only to identify options that were available to him, that supports your belief that our 7-3 season fully met CDCs expectations. Since you are calling him out as “pathetic,” you must have a lot of answers lined up.

Lighten up dude.he said CDCs lack of action

Herman isn't getting fired unless Meyer wakes up in the middle of the night, after some kind of burnt orange epiphany, and calls CDC up and says, "I'll take the job". That's the only scenario I see where Herman doesn't return. All the other plausible names I've heard: Sarkisian, Cristobal, Campbell, etc. are just as big a crap shoot as Herman was and not worth a 40-50 million dollar gamble, which is about what it would cost.

He said the inaction was “pathetic,” dude (are you really young enough to say “dude” without making a fool of yourself?).
Calling out CDC’s inaction as pathetic (and making the non sequitur conclusion that CDC’s goal was 7-3) requires him to say exact what available action CDC missed, or else he is just making a clown comment.
I remember you, too, said the same illogical and unfactual thing, that hornfans posters “wanted” mediocrity, when they simply weren’t as hysterical as you. I invited you to post a single example, knowing you couldn’t.
So maybe I could lighten up, but your posts are so light of content they could really be summarized by a crying child upset things aren’t going his way. Dude.

yep, young in my mind dude Remember this is a forum, not a joust. Everyone has an opinion and doesnt have to agree with you. Lighten up. In my opinion,CDCs lack of action is pathetic and his inaction shows he is satisfied with mediocracy. I would imagine some folks will agree with that and some will not. Seems like the person being hysterical might be you.

No way. You make very strong accusations; I point out that they are illogical and you can’t back them up with facts. You are caught with your argument pants down

quick, what exactly should CDC have done, and when?

If you can’t answer that in 10 seconds, you shouldn’t call CDC out.
(Edited out unnecessary obnoxious comment)
(BTW, I agree that I need to lighten up, and sorry for being obnoxious)

Sorry.I am not that fast, and at my age I dont need my pants down. I would have liked to have seen CDC fire Herman ,as others on this forum have expressed. I know we cannot get Saban,Meyer or Dabo . I would like to see us reach out to stoops or venables. Apology accepted. We are not all going to agree but we are all University of Texas fans.

Butch,

Since you have no idea what CDC has or has not done, what the constraints may or may not be, how many people he has to deal with to get the job done, then your comments are unfounded other than in your own mind.

You can say that the administration's timeline does not make you happy, but to call "lack of action" "pathetic" when you have no idea what if any action may or may not have occurred, and can't prove you point, YOUR COMMENT IS ABSURD!

You could never have handled the Saban saga.

This whole coaching drama would make for a nice Netflix miniseries to watch in the waning days of the Coronavirus.

Maybe our Minister of Culture would even be willing to play Tom H.

It ain’t over til it’s over. To that let me add a profound observation: It ain’t over.

As I have said many times and many pages ago, show me an example of an employee that has thrown their boss and the shareholders under the bus and survived very long. That is, unless that employee has compromising pictures, or considerable financial leverage. I seriously doubt that Herman has either, although $15,000,000 isn’t chump change.

To those doubters, I think that you will be pleasantly surprised.

Ha! Since we're getting all literary in here, I think some Shakespeare works describe the situation:

No doubt, the program is currently in The Tempest.

Tom Herman's take on the bowl game win is All's Well That Ends Well.

The play calling this year was sometimes A Comedy of Errors.

Winter's Tale will tell us where we're going from here.

If CDC ends up sitting on it and keeping Tom along for another year, then I guess it was all just Much Ado About Nothing.

I didnt see or hear CDC do anything except say Herman was the coach. That is the fact. opinions may seem absurd to some people and not to others. That is why they are opinions. If you dont agree, that is ok.
