For Real ....Herman “IS” Done!!!

Great thread. For whatever reason my most vivid mental video is that option by Ga for the winning score. It has never left me. I was mad, sad, dismayed, the whole bit. Couldn’t speak for several minutes I thought it must be a visual error of some sort.

Boy does the mention of “goat heads” bring back the same sort of long ago memories. Growing up in El Paso those nasty things were sometimes the most green thing growing in the yards. And did they ever hurt! Every golf course I ever played on there had the too! Playing the ball off them was better than the dirt though.

Yep, I was there and it was freezing cold. Iwant to say there was snow. I know texas playesd everybody and if I remember correctly Exslaben (spelling ) played a down at quarterback. Correct me if you older guys remember.

I think you are right about the biter cold and ice for the 1974 UT vs. TCU game in FW. I was not there. But I recall seeing a photo in a newspaper of a UT player around some ice or snow on the field / sideline during the game.

And think u-r right Erxleben took a snap or 3. Hell, walk ons probably played a lot in the 4th qtr.

The Horns administered a West Texas oilfield-*** beatdown of the Frogs that day. 81-16.

Yes, like 1964... lost 1 game by 1 point to Arky 14-13. IIRC, Horns scored late to make 13, went for 2 points but Marvin Kristynik pass to Hix Green was underthrown. Despite that Horns finsihed 9-1 went to Orange Bowl and beat Namath & # 1 ranked 'Bama 21-17 - IIRC. Finished 1964 ranked #2.

Yep. Arky scored after we had too many men on the field when they punted on 4th down. One of our guys was running off but didn't make it in time.
Think about it. If that game was played today, we kick the PAT and the game goes into OT. Who knows what would have happened?
I still have the SI cover from that Orange Bowl--Ernie Koy on his 79 yard TD run. I think that was the first Orange Bowl played at night.

I will try to remember to post that ALLSOME SI cover of Koy vs. Bama tomorrow when I'm on my laptop.

Those damn things would puncture a bicycle tire, let alone the bottom your foot. Made grass burrs seem like a picnic.

In 1974 didn't the Horns beat TCU in Fort Worth 84-0 or something obscene like that? I did not attend the game otherwise I would remember.

I saw a statement earlier on this thread of 58-0 but I thought the final score was much higher than that.
I listened to that game. What a beat down. 81-16. Only time I ever heard DKR apologize to another coach for running up the score, on his TV show the next evening. But, when you have the third string in and the other team can’t stop your guys, that opponent is pathetic. I remember coach Royal saying during the hi-lites “well these guys don’t get many opportunities to play, so when they do get on the field, they want to look good for their parents and sweethearts, so you can’t tell them not to score or fuss at them when they do.”

I, along with my future wife, attended that game. Roosevelt Leaks ( I think) had a good game for the few minutes he played before the first teamers were benched. And it was amazing how tcu couldn't stop anything Texas did.
I even became squeamish, as though I was watching a game between college players and elementary kids.

I Remember the stands were icy and had to knock the ice off the stands to sit down. Still like to froze. Wooden stands if I remember correctly.

He sets the stage for his eventual acceptance of a generous and accommodating offer from Texas.

If he turns us down, then we are more poisonous “perception wise” then I thought. Politics, Money oriented, BMD, Crappy fans, crazy pressure etc...I guess we are Rome..
Dealing with The Longhorn Network doesn’t help either.

"There's more than mornings (where he wants to return), Colin. You can't do something as long as I've done it (and not) just feel a little bit empty. I have a great spot on Fox, and I love Reggie, Matt, Brady and Rob Stone. We have a great group. I really have absorbed that and embraced it. But, to say I don't think about it... it's every day. But it'd have to be the perfect, perfect situation. It'd have to be something that I was confident that the health issues I could overcome, and at least prevent. So, I don't know. At this point, I think I'm done, but I learned a long time ago...you know, I left a job once where I really planned on being there, then you get a phone call from a better opportunity. So, you know, I think I'm done, but I would never say I'm never done."

Here is part of what Orangebloods says about that

3. In talking with high-level university officials this week, very few concrete specifics have emerged in our conversations with regards to specifics related to the Meyer rejection. There could be a number of reasons for that, ranging from Texas officials not wanting to relay harsh rhetoric in his final response to there wasn't much to pass along outside of the bottom line to there being a conspiracy to hide secret plans to delay a true final decision until the New Year, to sources just not wanting to say a damn thing to us.

The bottom line is that from my perspective, no one that I trust has so much as given me a flash of a wink that would suggest that there's some Machiavellian plan in place that ends with Meyer in Austin when the dust settles.

I wish I could tell you otherwise because Meyer's name being mentioned with the job was probably the best thing to happen to Orangebloods business in years, but there are no indications at this point outside of burnt orange confirmation bias, blind hope and a refusal to accept an otherwise harsh reality that points to it actually going down. Still, you better believe everyone will be keeping an eye on Meyer moving forward.

4. In talking with Texas officials this week, I would not be shocked to see them at least return to Meyer in January in the most stealthy way possible in an effort to make sure that nothing has changed, especially if Texas sticks with Tom Herman through the rest of the season (bowl game) as is overwhelmingly expected. Whatever happens, if anything happens, will almost certainly be done in a way that minimizes exposure because none of the parties involved on the Texas side will want to have a second miss see the light of public day, especially when you consider what is being speculated behind the scenes as potentially looming next (see below).

We're just at a point right now where the ONLY move where there appears to be a consensus among those in the decision-making power structure is that Meyer and Meyer alone is worth the financial commitment needed to push a complete reset ($25 million) on the program at this point. While that could eventually change, it's where things stand now.

It sets the stage for taking a Notre Dame offer or USC offer if they happen to come calling. If he was going to take the Texas deal, he would have taken it. Texas is irrelevant in the big picture, and that helps the SEC; so get used to it. I think the main reason Urban turned us down was the whole "woke" ********. He knows recruiting against other major schools is dead, and there is no way anyone turns that around. Tom Herman's legacy is that he destroyed Texas Football !!!!!!!!

While I understand your reasoning Maj, you might want to step on the brakes a bit. Was Meyer using Texas, undoubtedly. What good came out of this shot? One, most of the BMD's found a way to put ego's aside to form a consensus. Two, CdC continues to show who is boss without yelling that fact every day. This is the mark of a true professional. He is not going to let Texas down over the long run. Look at the way he has cleaned up most of the Women's side of things (all except retaining Angelia Kelly).

Three, and most importantly, at some point CdC will throw enough money at some known quality name that will change the fortunes on and off the field (including recruiting). The major issue now is dumping any thought of a bowl game and removing Herman NOW. One of the Coordinators should be able to handle the start offseason, and who knows one of them might be the final answer.

If it is indeed true that Meyer did not accept, Texas is in for 15 years of mediocrity. No big names will ever come here, and it will take years to get lucky with some hot young prospect.

Ohhhh the drama

On the subjet of CDC.....Right now he knows he can't get a savior coach. He also is probably regretting his move from TCU to Texas ( aside from the money ). He is not a staunch supporter of "The Eyes of Texas", or else he would have nipped that **** in the bud. The motto of "The winning tradition of the University of Texas will not be entrusted to the weak nor the timid. " That's dead too. We have a bunch of ******* dipshits running this university; otherwise our band wouldn't be refusing to play our school song, and those who would refuse would have been out of the band on their ear weeks ago. I look for him to jump ship asap, and will gladly go down with the ship with Herman after Urban turned him down. I'm about ready to box up all my memorabilia and turn my Longhorn Room into an extra bedroom or something. Just don't know what team I can turn my attention to (IF I continue watching college football).

More from OB

Outside of the Meyer conversation, the next thing to keep an eye on with the Texas athletic department is a possible attempt to rebuild the standing of Herman, who has received zero public support from Texas athletic director Chris Del Conte for essentially the last six months, but especially during the season.

Del Conte has always indicated that he would hold off on all public commentary on the football program until the end of the regular season. With the announcement on Thursday that the game against Kansas has been cancelled, the end of the regular season has arrived and there will be expectations for Del Conte to weigh in on the situation with football, especially in light of the very real new set of expectations that Herman will be around for the 2021 season, barring another change in direction.

Given that Del Conte hasn't exactly made a lot of decisions this fall that you'd find in the traditional athletic director's playbook, it's hard to say with certainty what chess moves he'll make in the coming days and weeks, but there seems to be an understanding that Del Conte has to give some sort of public endorsement of Herman if the plan is to bring Herman back.

It is amazing to me how bad we are at this stuff. The leaking of chasing Meyer while Herman is still the coach is bad for the team and even though I dislike a lot about Herman it had to make his job harder with the kids too.

I completely disagree with how he handled the Eyes and I was fooled when he was hired into thinking he was going to be able to turn us around. He has been better than Charlie but not by much.

We look like a second rate University. This has been going on since Mack left. We could not even hire coordinators we wanted under Strong and Herman because of this sh@t show we having going on.

We brag about CDC and I hope he does well by us, but the way the Meyer courtship went displays to me that we don’t know what we are doing. It time to clean house and gut the program of all of these problems. If Urban is not coming then find another up and coming coach who is hungry. Tell all the influencers to keep their mouths shut and rebuild this program. We went from We Are Texas to We WERE Texas. No one is scared of playing us. No one fears the Longhorns. We became a joke in a second rate conference. With the money we have and the players that come out of this state it is truly embarrassing to see what we have become. This should be one of the top 5 jobs in college football. Instead we are not and are out looking like beggars for a savior. What a mess.

Dumpster fire :fire::fire::fire:

Mack Brown found a way to win here and he is no genius. Herman can win games against tough opponents. He just needs to get out of his own way by getting rid of conservatism. However, I’d like Urban to coach here. The Eyes controversy is fixable if the fan base yields just a smidge. I suspect that winning on the field would ease the intense pain of such a yield. Herman, this is directly to you: Stop acting like you earned something when you haven’t yet.
