For Real ....Herman “IS” Done!!!

My pleasure. ;)
But I'll have you know I am on the side of keeping the Eyes as it is.
While I may side with players, coaches, etc. on other issues, I believe going after the Eyes was taking it too far.
Yes, the Eyes demand is what Woke me. I was on the fence until that.

I attended the '69 TCU game in person. We were 7-0 going in and favored by who knows how many points, yet every one was nervous as hell. Every one remembered '61 and the other cockroach losses. We beat 'em 69-7. Dead Cockroaches everywhere.

In 1974 didn't the Horns beat TCU in Fort Worth 84-0 or something obscene like that? I did not attend the game otherwise I would remember.

I saw a statement earlier on this thread of 58-0 but I thought the final score was much higher than that.

Yes, like 1964... lost 1 game by 1 point to Arky 14-13. IIRC, Horns scored late to make 13, went for 2 points but Marvin Kristynik pass to Hix Green was underthrown. Despite that Horns finsihed 9-1 went to Orange Bowl and beat Namath & # 1 ranked 'Bama 21-17 - IIRC. Finished 1964 ranked #2.

Agree, but Namath didnt really play much and/or only had one leg when in
Still, we were probably the best team in country at end of the year

We were sitting on Row 1 on the east side upper deck, directly behind the CBS Sports banner. When Craig missed the ball, my little girl started crying, she cried through the end of the game, out of the Cotton Bowl, across Parry to Joe's lot next to his plumbing supply place, down Exposition, through Deep Elum, to the hotel....

Now you are making me cry!

We may have been sitting next to each other!

Clean,

Remember that there was a 30 game win streak, during which we covered 29 times, the exception being in Waco, when DKR uttered his famous line at halftime about there being a game going on out there and anytime we decided to join he'd be glad to watch.

I think Baylor had about 300 yards of offense in the first half, but only 7 points

Namath did hurt his knee badly in some game that season. IIRC he played most of the Orange Bowl game vs. UT. His knee was heavily taped and he did not run at all.

CDC strikes me as the type of person who makes very well thought-out decisions. So...methinks he's biding his time with the current coach. The giveaway is his assisting with recruiting. Reminds me of a boss "helping out" a struggling employee...before that employee gets the boot.

Was he defending the program and school with Johnson, or was he telling him Herman will be back, dont worry?

Clean, The 1968 TCU game was outstanding in so many ways. Chris Gilbert ran wild on the Frogs. We had tied Third Ward (thank you Mike for the fumble) and lost to Tech in Lubbock, so Tech was heading to The Cotton Bowl as SWC Champions. The week after we lost to Tech, I told people, Arkansas will roll into Lubbock the last week and beat Tech, we just need someone else to do it.

While we were in Amon Carter, Tech was at Floyd Casey against (I believe) the winless Bears. Visitors shared the east side of Amon Carter with the TCU students. Up in the stands, behind our bench, there were two portable radios amongst the Texas crowd. By the fourth quarter, DKR was not happy because almost every player not on the field had his back to the field looking up into the stands, because lowly BAYLOR WAS BEATING TECH! TCU got a first down, and the Texas crowd roared because Baylor scored again. Baylor beat Tech; then the Hogs rolled into Lubbock the following Saturday and steamrolled Tech, and the Horns were off to witness Bill Bradley's most memorable quote and then beat Tennessee in The Cotton Bowl

I have posted often that I sincerely hope that maid in McLennan County never had to work another day the rest of her life.

My memory of the 1968 season comes down to this - I was invited to the UH game in Austin (the 20-20 tie) by our neighbors across the street who were UT grads and had a 5th ticket. I was best friends with their two sons, David and Mike. But my parents had just separated and they argued over who got me that weekend. So I was not allowed to go.

On the way home from the game, on Highway 71 just outside Smithville, their car was hit head on. Two guys in the other car were drunk and crossed over. In those days, there was no divider in the middle. Five people died right there on the highway -- both my friends' parents and one of my friends (Mike - who was sitting in the middle in the backseat and thus had no seatbelt), plus the two men in the other car. There were 2 survivors, David and the neighbor kid who took my place. Both the latter two are still alive.

LH,

The article did not note that Bobby was pissed about losing to Pennsylvania in 1964 because he let the game be planned the same weekend as the Texas Coaches All Star game was played at Amon Carter; thus, it can be argued that Texas' best 80 players were in Tarrant County, not in Hershey, Pennsylvania.

In 1995 or 96, I was in Charlottesville, VA, walking up the sidewalk to the McCue Center when an older gentleman walking out stopped and asked if I was from Texas. (Was it the Wranglers, anteater boots, or 1000x hat that gave me away?) He was Coach Petakuski (sp), former Penn HS coach and assistant at State Penn. We had several quality visits over the years, but I will never forget him talking about the 66 & 67 Big33 games. He told me that Texas DTs were faster than his WRs. "We had never seen such speed. We decided at half of the 66 game that we would go back to playing Ohio a soon as Bobby left us out of the contract".

here is the whole game in one picture (that's craig curry to the right)

I was there for the game. Had great seats, too! We had that game pretty much in the bag, but then came the fumbled punt late in the 4th, followed by the Georgia TD, and game over. We were ranked #2, Miami knocked off #1 Nebraska in the Orange Bowl that evening, which only made the loss sting that much worse.

Butch,

How old were you before you knew his name was "Tommy Crutcher", not "Mista Crutcha"?

TCU RB Tommy Joe Crutcher or "Crutcha" was from McKinney where I have lived about 25 years.

FWIW, there is a fairly new street in McKinney named after him. I think it's Crutcher Crossing.

Something you will never forget.... very sad.

UT grad buddy and I sat on lower West side upper deck for that '84 CB vs GA. We too thought the Horns had it. Never was as stunned and pissed off at a UT loss as I was after that one....

EDIT: Except, one other time - 2001 Big XII Championship loss to Colorado.

As I was walking under the stands shortly after the game, I brushed up very close to DKR at Texas Stadium - interestingly we looked at each other and we both shook our heads at each other.... only time I ever saw him up close like that. The rest of my party left earlier for the car so they missed seeing him.

I think you're talking about the '70 game. I didn't see it, but I heard it was 21-7 at the half and I thought, well 42-14 isn't too bad. Boy was I surprised when I heard it ended 21-14. That almost knocked us out of first place. Boy, those were heady days!

As always. I was using my binoculars and saw the UGA guard flat on his belly reach out and tackle Ty Allert on their TD. NO CALL!

Fortunately, my daughter got some "revenge" seeing the Rose Bowl live and then The Sugar Bowl live a couple of years ago, but that January day can never be healed.

:hookem2:
I must have been close to you. I was in the upper deck about the 20 yard line.
