For Real ....Herman “IS” Done!!!

I put all my money on Urban Meyer. If this deal doesn’t get done, it will be for one of two reasons, nether of which falls at the feet of Chris Del Conte.

The situation is not helped by wild *** speculation by internet gurus that don’t know ****, but exist because people pay for “breaking news” which either broke yesterday or everybody and their dog will have for free in ten minutes.

I may be too harsh, but if certain gurus give me the information for free, I won’t believe it because it came from them. I will immediately pick up the phone and call someone inside the department and verify it.

Most of it ain’t rocket science, but rather common sense.

Briles is a great coach. But toxic as hell. Never get hired here. Matt Campbell doesn't move my needle. Winning at Iowa State, where nobody hates you has got to be easier in some ways than winning at Texas, where you get everybody's best shot every Saturday. So I'm skeptical about him.
I don't like Urban Meyer personally, but I've come around to thinking he needs to be our get. But I just don't think he's coming. I'm not convinced Herman is gone.

And still using the blue parking pass

Cesspool. Hmmm

his last three years were 11-2, 11-2, and 10-3 at Baylor with two Big 12 championships, the same number of championships we here at UT have had in 25 years. A Heisman, a new stadium—all from a backward town and a school with no football history to speak of.

You can hate on the guy with every good reason, but Briles’ on-the-field coaching was phenomenal.
And recruiting in Texas. He is a grade A we know what but Many Texas HS Coaches loved him.

Bobby Burton morning update, addressing the osu guy's remarks --

Despite reports out of Columbus from Kirk Barton, a former player of Urban Meyer, that Meyer is not taking the Texas head coaching position, I have no new reliable news on the Urban Meyer front as it relates to Texas as of 6:50 this morning.

The last I have heard from an unimpeachable Texas source is what I shared with the board yesterday afternoon. “It is all up to Urban at this point,” is the last text I have received on the matter. It should be noted that unlike from the Texas point of view, I do not have an unimpeachable source from the Meyer camp. I need to share that point with the community here. I am likely to be made aware of any decision that is communicated to Texas and will share it here as soon as I get it.

How any news will become official or public is out of any person’s control, except perhaps Meyer himself.

So we wait.

The thread seems to have turned negative.

He must be considering it or he’d have said that he isn’t interested by now. That doesn’t mean he’s a lock, but he’s certainly mulling it over. I don’t think money is an issue, but I think he might want more control than CDC wants to surrender. He might want to be Asst AD with total control over football operations or something along those lines. He’s negotiating from a position of strength because we’ve totally f’d things up since we fired Mack.

I think that UT (Herman) and ou (Riley) were trying as hard as they could to beat Campbell, and they've failed as often as not. Campbell matches or exceed their gameday coaching skills. He seems to coach his players up and consistently get their best.

Were Campbell recruiting to Austin or ou, instead of Ames, I have no doubt that he would do very well.

Sabre and others who say he is being courted by B10 football power schools may very well be correct. He may be at Michigan or Penn State by the end of December.

I do think that with his knowledge of the B12, and his skills he could come in jump start our program. If we can't get Urban then Matt seems a reasonable choice.

I agree, Clean.
It is simple....no decision has been made from Meyer...and even if part of the decision has been made or there is leaning this way...we wouldn't know until Sunday or Monday earliest. My best guess is we are all on board but want to wait til after KState and Urban is stuck on the fence with a real tough decision on his hands. Firing Tom is set but we won't go public until decision by Meyer is made and Saturdays game is over at the earliest due to timing and uncertainty of replacement. The only thing complicating it or making it appear any other way is media and fan impatience, silliness, and absurdity.

I think its probably good news if we dont hear anything today
If so, then the FOX broadcast on Saturday morning will be worth watching
If the other FOX talking heads ignore it, just pretend there is nothing there, no kidding around with Meyer, then it will be because they were told not to discuss it. Which means there was a reason for that
This is my theory anyway

What is the likelihood that they're asking Meyer to retain the big dollar assistants instead of firing them all and buying them out?

Campbell seems like a good coach and a great guy, but we’ve just tried back-to-back one-season wonders. We need a “can’t miss guy” who’ll put butts in the seats and restore confidence in the program. There aren’t many of those.

Here is 247's take

Shortly after Texas’ Oct. 10 loss to Oklahoma, Texas athletic director Chris Del Conte and president Jay Hartzell were bombarded with hundreds of emails concerning The Eyes of Texas and head football coach Tom Herman’s job status, records acquired via the Texas Public Information Act show.

Already a simmering, complex issue among the alumni and donor base, a picture of Texas quarterback Sam Ehlinger standing alone for The Eyes of Texas – the school’s alma mater – reignited a debate that spanned over the summer and into the fall about the song and its origins. Many donors threatened to pull funding if football players continued to refuse standing for the song, including a “seven-figure” donation in one case. Fans and donors alike also put Herman in their crosshairs after The Eyes controversy, calling for his firing following what was then a 2-2 start. The Longhorns are now 5-3, with no shot at the Big 12 title game.

Horns247 later reported that other Texas athletics head coaches had been informed by Del Conte their players would need to stand for the Eyes of Texas (though not necessarily sing) following games.

“Chris (Del Conte) has made it clear in the current climate, no athlete will be forced to sing (the Eyes), but that we’re going to continue to have the song as a tradition and to behave respectfully during the Eyes,” Texas track coach Edrick Floreal told Horns247.

This outcry against Herman provides a window into the conversations surrounding Texas football and its donor base presently, which includes one name above all as a potential Herman replacement: Urban Meyer. Many Texas backers pleaded with Del Conte to swing big and go after the former Ohio State head coach. Said one Texas Exes Lifetime Member and season ticket holder in October: “The ONLY coach who can turn this program around is Coach Meyer.”

Plan B is supposed to be an NFL person

BOB or Bieniemy are the names Ive seen, but maybe there is someone else
I didn't look...

I've been wondering about Peterson....though I have a feeling he may not like nor fit Austin

He already knows some of them, so seems possible

They both coached for him (but so did Beck)
If I were putting odds, I would have Hutzler as the #1 most likely to be retained
You mentioned Hutzler...Seems like Drayton and Ash would be likely candidates to retain. He has good history with both.

I read this this morning...very insightful....meant to post it. Thanks for doing so.
They only picked out the ones that were G rated to share.

I think some here are drastically underestimating the recruiting pickle we will be in if a huge, instant credibility name isn't our next coach. We can go another route....but it will be a much slower climb. That may be best/OK...IDK...I'm not sayin....just sayin'....

They gathered some Open Record communications

One of the first messages to Del Conte came in on Sunday morning from a third-generation Texas Ex and a Terence Club season ticket holder – seats that require a $1,000 gift for renewal each year – who expressed his displeasure with how the Eyes of Texas situation was handled and with Herman after the OU loss.

“Tom Herman continues to embarrass the University of Texas on and off the field and it needs to stop. I literally could not give away my 4 tickets to yesterday's game to my friends/family nor sell them on stubhub at a 50% discount. Apathy has arrived.

Tom allowed the players to disrespect the history and tradition of the school along. Tom allowed the players to disrespect all the Longhorn Foundation members that donate their hard earned money to give these kids the best college experience and every advantage possible to succeed on the field.

The site of Sam Ehlinger singing the Eyes of Texas BY HIMSELF after another loss to OU has to be rock bottom, right?

I find myself this morning doing some real soul searching and asking myself whether the University of Texas is worthy of my time and money going forward.

I sincerely wish you the best of luck navigating through this mess and I am confident that IF anyone can get us to the other side in better shape it is you.

Hook’em.”

There were also threats to withhold funding

"While many high-level donors called Del Conte by phone, per sources, there were still a number of athletic contributors who expressed their displeasure after the Oklahoma game via email. While Del Conte did not respond to any of the emailers in the records 247Sports received, a Texas spokesperson said Del Conte “did reach out by phone to most who emailed or reached out to him.” Hartzell replied to a few people who reached out to him via email, but none of those who lobbed criticism at The University or the football team.
* * *
Here is a sampling of the many emails Del Conte and Hartzell collected in the days after the Red River Showdown:

“My family and I have been season ticket holders for more than 60 years. My grandparents gave a substantial donation to help fund the west side upper deck. I grew up in Austin and remember as a 6 year old kid going to the football games and watching in the “knothole”section. I sold programs as a Boy Scout at the games in my teens. As a college student I sat in the flash card section. My wife was a letterman for womens swimming. Over the years I have sat through good seasons and bad seasons. However regardless of the outcome I was always taught by my parents and in turn taught my children (son class of 2015 Plan II Phi Beta Kappa and my daughter BBA class of 2016) that you never leave the game early. You don’t leave because it is so important and respectful to sing the “Eyes of Texas” to salute the players for their effort win or lose. Respect for this song and tradition is a fundamental part of my being.

The way the administration and the coaching staff have handled the false narrative about the “Eyes of Texas” is abysmal. This year I did not renew my seats and I also did not let the foundation “hold” my contribution until next year. I explained to the longhorn foundation person that called me my rationale for not renewing. It was not the Covid virus but the political unrest amongst the team. I won’t be lectured by a bunch of spoiled undisciplined players who don’t respect the fan base. I won’t tolerate sacred school traditions being abolished. I had never felt any ill will toward the University of Texas until this past summer. Then on Saturday after suffering the disappointment of watching an unprepared and poorly coached team lose, I saw Sam Ehlinger standing alone to sing the “Eyes of Texas”.

That was heartbreaking to see and represents an all time low point in the programs history. It represents an absolute failure of leadership of both the coaching staff and the administration. The University turned its back on Sam Ehlinger and the fans who make this whole enterprise possible.

Well those days are over for me.

Despite four generations of longhorns in my family donating money and going to games, I will not renew my season tickets. I won’t donate to either the athletic department or the academic side until there are substantive changes. Tom Herman must be fired immediately as he is a poor coach, poor leader, and does not represent the fan base of UT.

Secondly the administration must take ownership and repudiate the false racist narrative surrounding the “Eyes of Texas”.

Thank you for considering my email.”

"I know I am one of one of thousands of emails you have received on the Eyes issue but I feel obligated to share my thoughts. I have sponsored Texas athletics for the past few years and spent well over $100,000+ to do so. I am a UT Law grad (03) and enjoy supporting the school.

I do not plan to do any more advertising on campus until this Eyes issue is resolved. It is simply unacceptable to end one of the best traditions of UT overnight because some players don't feel like doing it anymore.

If the players want to stand and not sing, fine. If some wanted to kneel, fine. But the image of players storming off the field and our quarterback standing by himself is just disgraceful.

Please fix this. This problem is going to get worse and worse if a compromise is not reached. I am copying my Learfield rep Eryn McMahan on this email to keep her in the loop. Thanks."
