Have we ever had a football coach with a full beard?

Ketch-up with the latest
I spoke with a source on the Ohio State side of things late last night (and will continue those conversations today). This source claims that in talking to people with knowledge of Urban Meyer's family that they personally do not want to see him get back into coaching. "I am pretty confident in the family wanting him out of that role and being a grandfather, father, husband and not in constant head pain," the source told me via DM.

* There's a general sense in Columbus that Meyer is quite happy in his current role and enjoys not having to deal with the constant stress of coaching.

* That being said, this Ohio State contact believes that the decision ultimately will come down to what Urban desires. "It's his choice, obviously," the source said. "Meyer is a wildcard and nobody can be sure."

I'm supposed to check in with this source again a little later.... This is just one view of this situation from Columbus-tinted glasses.I figured I would pass it along before we all get distracted by whatever comes next. Don't read this as a negative report as much as it properly sets the backdrop of the decision that Meyer is trying to make and the emotions/feelings involved in getting there.

Well, if Meyer turns us down for the prom, and if the decision makers are still hell-bent on ditching Tom after a Meyer rejection ...

Then we should make a big hire, a very big hire. Someone who would make a big splash. You know, someone who would be sure to put a big Mark on the college football world.

Matt Wells may be available real soon.

Les Miles? I bet he would jump at the opportunity. We'd probably need someone to help him with the clock late in games but think what he could do with our level of talent the first 58 minutes of the game.

Mangino? No thank you.

He would coach circles around this league with our raw talent. He would probably also sign on for a short term or even a year-by-year contract.

I wouldn't want to be tied down to a long contract with a coach who may, or may not, pan out. I think it's safe to say that Meyer would be very highly likely to pan out.

I'd rather not see our coach collapse on the sideline from a stroke or heart attack.

...College football hot seat: Will Michigan, Texas jobs open? Or will 2021 be craziest carousel ever?
For more than a decade, Texas lacked leadership and infrastructure and fell far behind its Big 12 peers. Texas’ practice facilities are worse than some high schools, as their practice bubble looks like the toxic waste dripped down from I-35 and turned into a cocoon. Texas relied on its brand so much that it became a misaligned mess with exponentially worse facilities than a majority of its Big 12 peers.
The facilities are finally changing with a long overdue $175 million dollar South End Zone project. Texas has always had the money but hasn’t figured out the right way to spend it. Now it appears willing to overspend for an elite coach. But can the Longhorns find one?
Texas AD Chris Del Conte’s play here appears to be shopping for Herman’s replacement and attempting to arrange something before having to make a public decision on Herman. This is a common tactic, but rarely do these shadow searches unfold under such scrutiny. The question will be if Texas strikes out — and Del Conte will aim Dabo-level high if Meyer passes as expected — how will everybody sputter forward and force smiles for Herman returning for a plank-walk season in 2021?

Supposedly Meyer has used Thamel as a mouthpiece in the past. So the part about our substandard factifies could be part of a narrative

Mangino has a head for offense, no doubt about it. But his physical health? Sorry, I have to pass given the ridiculous stress levels that come with this job.
