Coaching News and Rumors

USC defensive coordinator search update for November 20, with notes and analysis

Some of this is old news, some is new:

:ucla:
Kelly may have saved his job at UCLA with that win over USC. It has been a very good week for Mr. Kelly.

:bu:
Aranda -- it's getting ugly on the Brazos. 50/50 he'll be fired

:indiana:
Tom Allen (Indiana) likely to be fired.

:msu:
The Michigan State job is open, in the event anybody actually wants it... (old news, I know)

:su:
The Syracuse job is open after Cuse fired Dino Babers

:ark:
Pitman will stay put at Arkansas. He'll get at least another year. Gotta give him a fair shot over a number of years. Hogs are forgiving animals.

:missst:
Arnett has been fired at Mississippi State.

:atm:
Jimbo Fisher has been fired at A&M (old news, I know).

If Lincoln Riley stays, and they just get a new DC, the following are some of the D coaches in the mix for the new DC position:

Leonhard -- top pick of many Trojan partisans
Aranda -- 50/50 he'll be gone at Baylor
Tom Allen -- fired IU head coach
Zach Arnett -- fired Miss St head coach
D'Anton Lynn -- UCLA DC
Manny Diaz -- doubt they'll get him
Scott Symones -- SMU DC
Ron English – Louisville DC
Andy Avalos – Former Boise State DC
Joe Harasymiak – Rutgers DC
Joe Rossi – Minnesota DC
Trent Bray – Oregon State DC

on edit - looks like Morgan Scalley - Utah DC is at the top of USC's list for DC.

A lot of them really want Jim Leonhard. If Leonhard is offered the HC position at Mississippi State, however, that's tough to turn down--assuming a Power 5 head coaching job is one of his goals.

While Miss St is a perennial also-ran in a tough neighborhood, the unrealistic demands of USC fans and big-cigars can be even more absurd than here at UT. And the USC job would only be a coordinator position (assuming Lincoln isn't shown the door, which could still happen...).

:missst:

Rumors are floating around that Jim Leonhard (Illinois analyst; former Wisconsin Defensive Coordinator) is in the mix.

They're also looking at Jamey Chadwell (Liberty).

Additional candidates include:

Jacksonville State head coach Rich Rodriguez

UNLV's Barry Odom

Oklahoma offensive coordinator Jeff Lebby

For a head coach, Chadwell is the pick of the litter. That should take him if he's interested.

What a decision for Aranda. You leave Waco with a suitcase full of old Baylor basketball money, do you:

Move to Exposition for $1-2 million knowing you will be unemployed in a year and starting over at Cal Lutheran OR

Try to land a real job at Florida, Baton Rouge, down Hwy 6 at the Cesspool on the Brazos or somewhere in the frigid north OR

Seek redemption at the great Saban second chance program OR

Wait for an "elitest DC" to be outplaced and grab that

The Michigan State marketeers are pitching their wares to Toledo head coach Jason Candle.
:msu:

If Candle turns them down, maybe Michigan State could try to poach the Ypsilanti High School head football coach, or something...

Maybe Miss State's new HC (whomever that may be) could hire Aranda as a DC.

Aranda -- not a good HC, but a good Defensive coach (similar to Charlie, in that respect)

USC DC job

SN,

I have already called the Bell County Sheriff's dept to see what permits are needed to have the moving van stop in front of McLane's office with the Longhorn cheerleaders on top leading "TEXAS FIGHT" and blaring the band on speakers.

I bet many thought they'd never see the day when Manny Diaz was such a hot coaching commodity!
Nope, he always drove me nuts with his delayed blitzes. They'd just throw right into the vacated area but as it was delayed we never got the pressure. Yea, that Diaz but maybe he's learned something since then.

Who was that DC we had who liked to use the LBs to "mug" Offensive Linemen?

That was one of the strangest football concepts I've seen.

Hamilton from IT believes A&M will make their new hire by next Wednesday, at the latest.

Jedd Fisch (Arizona) and Mike Elko (Duke) are the two names being discussed.

As for Fisch, he and A&M DC DJ Durkin have worked together.
