Coaching News and Rumors

Auburn: Rumors (just rumors) coming from Auburn that Bill Clark of UAB may be back in the search after all. Sounds like a possible $$$$$ issue...; or:

"A source of the logjam, sources said, is Auburn’s insistence that the next head coach retain associate head coach/defensive line coach Rodney Garner, and possibly defensive coordinator Kevin Steele as well.
College football’s highest-paid assistant coach, Steele is in year one of a 3-year deal worth $2.5 million per year.
Steele actively campaigned for the head coaching job both in front of and behind the curtain, and so it’s simple to see why the next Auburn head coach would be hesitant to retain a defensive coordinator who so clearly thinks he should be the head coach."

If that's the reason (bold-faced text above), you can see why Napier passed on this "golden opportunity..."

Auburn is also rumored to still be considering Freeze and others...

And, if Auburn's sordid history wasn't sleazy enough, new rumors are flashing that they're even talking about Briles (very unofficial source). While he may cause additional reputational damage to the school, he would tear it up in the SEC at the Auburn platform.

Kiffin is still high in the rumor mill for AU.

While he may cause additional reputational damage to the school,

How can any additional damage be done to Auburn's "reputation"?

Who in their right mind would take the Auburn job if he had to keep Steele? The guy masterminded the coup to get his boss fired so he can have the job. That's why Billy Napier passed on the offer.

And, yes, Art Briles will be an upgrade from Kevin Steele or Todd Graham (they'll be down to him in a couple of weeks).

If you want out of coaching, but need a golden parachute of $15-20 million, this is your job. You won't have to put up living in nowhere Alabama but two years.

Didn't another head coach take this path after the last season? Seems like one did, but my memory is not too good. Can someone help me out? How did it work out?

You see Tom, as I'm famous for saying: "I'M A MAN!!!"
And to be a man, you can't constantly blame your subordinates for everything that keeps going wrong.

Re: Tony Elliott

“I have not been contacted. I haven’t talked to anybody at Auburn..."
Elliott added that Auburn is “a great university, very similar to Clemson.”

If he is contacted by Auburn, Elliott said he will have to sit down with his family and determine if interviewing is the right move.

(reading between the lines--nothing's happened yet, but he'd probably consider it...)

He does more with less than any coach in the conference, and appears to be the best developer of talent, from what he gets to what he rolls out.

I'm on the same wavelength as you on this, no doubt. But, putting this year aside, that's also what I'd say about Patterson, with the Mullet and Campbell likewise falling squarely into the category of "doing more with less." Of the three, Campbell is the current hot ticket based on this year. IMHO, all three are good football coaches who could tear it up at a big-time platform.

"Auburn football looks desperate..."

"The down-home tomfoolery of Auburn football’s coaching search over the last week reads like some backwards Faulkner-esque word soup with a side of blackberry moonshine they cut with pine sap and opossum tears back behind the family sawmill. Pretty normal for Auburn football, in other words."

It's good to have an Auburn around.

They make UT's internal politics, and football-alumni-BMD relations look sane.
