Coach Prime

Usc's defense looked pretty bad vs arizona state last night. Buffs should score a few this week
Both teams could score a lot in this upcoming game. As bad as CU's OL is, I bet they still struggle. USC may have to blitz and send extra men into the pass rush, but when they do, I doubt CU's OL's ability to stop them. CU's OL is that bad. They're just awful--they will hold up the progress Deon is trying to make with the Colorado program.

According to Booger McFarland at the half, a lot of those sacks were sanders fault for not stepping up in the pocket. "He just keeps drifting backwards" allowing the edge rushers better angles.

Sanders culture is to focus on individual performance and a bunch of hype. Not Team. Which is probably why his line sucks.
If I put Colorado jerseys on Kentucky players and we win 6 games am I coach of the year?

Maybe he does that, but CU's OL still sucks. And, it's not just pass blocking. CU had 40 yards rushing. The Hawai'i Rainbows had more than that against Oregon--and this is one pathetically atrocious Hawai'i team. Pass-happy Texas Tech had 174 yards rushing and 456 total yards against Oregon. Until he fixes their OL, Deon won't be able to go very far with CU.

And CU's DL is also pretty shabby.

He built a pretty good skills-position team instantaneously through the portal + NIL $. But he was not able to do that in the trenches. This is not surprising, as linemen are tough to recruit, and the best are "home grown" in the same program. Sustained quality S&C training (over multiple years) is also very important in building up good lines. Some better OL coaching would also help.

"Swapping out all the players" as a strategy is probably ill-advised for the vast majority of programs, but it does generate interest and provide for the occasional upset.

I think if Coach Prime did this all over again at his next destination, assuming it's a Power-4 school and coming off of a lackluster season, he'd be a lot more wary about taking personnel risks with the OL and DL. Some WR who runs a 4.3? Sure, take him. But I don't think he'd be so quick to dismiss all of the linemen.

OL is a minimum 3 year project. It is extremely rare to get a Banks, who can more than hold his own as a freshman. So rare that it is essentially impossible to expect to fill 5 spots with that quality of kid. And even if you miraculously did get that type of raw talent, you still have schemes and communication issues to allow the line to function as a cohesive unit.

But I don't think he'd be so quick to dismiss all of the linemen.
This was the fatal flaw in his approach.

He may be able to portal in a bunch of decent (or better) linemen for next season. But like I said, to sustain a good program, you've got to have mostly "home grown" linemen. He's got to get the linemen coaching fixed as well. And if he doesn't have a top-notch S&C coach, he'd better get one. (A Wisconsin pedigree for the OL coach wouldn't hurt...)

He's already doing a lot better than his predecessor(s) at CU, but people were jumping the gun a bit thinking he was going to make a run for the PAC title this year, or something...

:cu:

He's got to fix those lines, and that's not an easy fix.

Colorado O-Line Coach O'Boyle's coaching pedigree:

- Chadron State :idk:
- Colorado Mesa (which one, there's 100s of them...?)
- Southern Illinois
- South Dakota
- Kent State

Could be the best they could do?

All of that is very true, Chop.

OTOH, we American sports fans (and network commentators) are often suckers for the heart-warming story of a charismatic coach who takes a program that's at the bottom of the heap and transforms it into a contender in a short amount of time, and so whenever that appears to be happening a lot of us will jump on the bandwagon without watching for any signs that might conflict with the warm fuzzy narrative.

Agree he’s spot on. Sanders needs to be harshly criticized for all his bad actions.
Colorado was stupid to bring him in. At least those previous players wanted to play at CU. The new guys only want to play at Sanders U. And when he leaves, CU will have a giant hole because everyone will transfer out.

Creek,

You act like CU can't handle it. Who has more experience at handling colossal fuckups than that school. NO, the Aggies are amateurs compared to the leadership provided by Bitsy Hoffman?

OR, should that be Bitsy "what do you mean we owe him $10 million

OR, Bitsy "please don't do this Bill, not now, we can work something out" Hoffman

OR, Bitsy "what do you mean we've been using hookers for 30 years" Hoffman

Currently, CU is ranked dead last in Total Defense—yards per game -133 place out 133 schools.
I guess Defense isn’t glam enough to focus on.

They are also tied with New Mexico for the most Penalties per game. Big fail. Maybe Whitlock needs to point that out as well.
