Coach PK & the #1 Texas D—Barron wins Thorpe Award --> We are DBU!!!

I've been watching since 1964 and started paying closer attention since 1968, and this may be the best defense I've seen at Texas, from coaching to performance on the field to depth. Hope it continues to the end of the season!

What??? How can that be… I heard somewhere on this board that Leon Fuller coached the 42 top defenses that we have ever had.

Is that not correct? 😉

Not correct. Leon wasn't here that long, but 79 OU was the best defense ever. After Leon's would come (in no particular order) Dick Tomey, Boom, Mike Campbell, Gene Chiszk (sp), even Bobby Jack (considering the impossible job he had having to use "leftovers" and a HC who didn't talk to him or the defense for weeks on end.

I did see something Saturday night that I haven't seen out of K coached defense before. On the first Aggie offensive possession, when he couldn't get the call in on time, the kids did their own thing, which showed me great preparation by the coaching staff.

CBS just called our D this year "The best defense in program history".

I've been the biggest promoter of Coach PK and our D since his arrival, and even I'm not sure I could go that far.............

We're close though. Until the end of the year, I can't say we're better than our 1983 Defense. Note: the Georgia Bulldogs were also the nemesis of our team in 1983.

Who TF was our OC in 1991?

Was that Amadee?

Whomever it was should have been thrown in the South Mall fountain after the last game, or something.

Coach PK is loyal to Sark.

He wouldn't jump ship to coach Defense at the Dallas Cowboys (or Pittsburgh Steelers) if they came calling.

And I don't think he wants a HC job. He's a pure Defense guy. Pay him some more $$$ and keep him around indefinitely.

WOW! CBS? That bastion of college football statistics? How many of our games have they televised? Has there been one since that was the Cotton Bowl's network for the SWC Champion?

I'm not joking on that Colin Simmons rising up to Kiki DeAyala level stuff. By the time he's done here, Simmons might be our best pass rusher ever.

Hat tip to the TEXAS D. PK gets credit, but Johnny Nansen gets just as much. The combination of PK and Nansen is what closed the gaps from the 2023 weaknesses.

Lots of football to be played this season.

Next year's challenge will be replacing 2 deep 2 techniques. Look for us to grab 2-3 interior DTs in the portal (like last year). Home grown DTs Alex January, Sydir Mitchell, Melvin Hills, Bledsoe, and Bryant will challenge for plenty of playing time in the 2 deep.

Sydir Mitchell looks slimmed down to somewhere South of 375 lbs or so, and he recently got some playing time, including making a tackle, against UK. If that dude could get around 335-340 lbs, he could be in the regular 2 deep. January looks like the future phenom. Bledsoe flashed some big time elusiveness and difficult-to-block capabilities late last year, but he's been absent in the lineup this year. Bryant is a powerful fireplug run-stopper. Some were comparing him to a shorter, slightly smaller Norton.

Hills is a quick and elusive former DE from "The Boot" who is now up to 300 lbs and not fat. We could probably field a competent young 2 deep at inside DT with what we have, but look for us to grab a couple of experienced studs in the portal.

We only lose a few DBs and we return a whole bunch of them from the 2 deep, here at DBU.

We have 3-4 incoming HS stud DBs, including a monster SS type from Galveston Ball. In the real olden days, Galveston Ball football had that aura of awe that Odessa Permian once had. Let's just say that nobody scheduled them for their homecoming game...

aggy had this thread on our secondary going from #105 to #1 in just one year. Little brother envious.

Poor aggies.

It's called PLAYER DEVELOPMENT. It requires good position coaches. It also requires good coordinators putting the players in the right schemes to succeed. That, and some unpredictability to confuse QBs and OLs. Good pass rushing also helps the D-backs, and good D-backs make for plenty of "coverage sacks" by the D-front.

I agree for right now.

And depth. We now only put in underclassmen (Simmons, Hill, Muhammad) when they're special, not because we're thin.

Two of those stupid ******** on TexGomers insist it was all due to schedule. So they are arguing the Big XII made us 100 spots worse than the SEC. I swear, the level of idiocy on that board is jaw-dropping.

You got the decimal in the wrong place on that last one. That's $1295 you get paid. The minimum anyone will accept to get kissed by TH.

Updated NCAA ranks for the main defensive categories:

#1 - Passing ypg allowed
#2 - Team pass efficiency D
#2 - Scoring D
#3 - Total D
#3 - Interceptions
#3 - Opponents' 1st downs
#3 - Red zone pct.
#5 - Forced turnovers
#6 - 3rd down D pct.
#12 - Rushing ypg allowed
#15 - Sacks
#19 - TFL
#25 - 4th down D pct.
#30 - Fumble recoveries
#60 - Defensive TDs (tied with a bunch of teams at 1)

My main takeaways from a few weeks ago haven't changed much:
1. We play a lot of zone with just enough ability to switch it up and stop the run when we need to.
2. The biggest improvement has been the presence in the backfield, mostly due to dominating DTs and the emergence of Simmons, Moore, and some other helpers.
3. If we could have put a couple more defensive TDs together and the midwest teams (ND, tOSU, Indiana, etc.) actually played some real offenses, we'd be mentioned with the best defenses that ever existed.
4. Teams that can run against us (UGA) are pretty much the only threat. Unfortunately, it looks like that's pretty much all we're up against from the CCG through the playoff. This is the polar opposite of last season, when someone like Penix could tear us up through the air. Wouldn't happen to the 2024 D.

Burke just devouring their RB on that 4th and goal play near the end of the game was a thing of great beauty.
Watch aggy #82 on that play. He was in the backfield and trying to throw a block for Daniels but the play was over before he could find someone to take on.
