Bo Davis audio…NSFW

Call me a nerd or whatever, but I don't think his rant had anything of substance in it. The whole "transfer if you'd rather be laughing" bit had nothing of the hows/whys they need to improve. It was just angry yelling, which some students respond to. They're not in HS. Half of them are over 20. And making NIL money. And, by the way, it IS a game. Important game for sure, but it's silly to keep saying "you think it's a game?"

If there was a Davis rant recorded in the video room about what Sweat did wrong on a play or what Coburn did well and why the other ************* needed to work on technique like him, I'd be more interested.

Shirley you can't be serious.

You understand when he says this isn't a game, he isn't referring to the actual ball game, right? Please tell us that.

When I first heard the news, it was portrayed as something bad. After listening to him, he is 100% right. What needs to happen now is whomever recorded this and leaked it needs to be gone! Secondly, whomever is laughing it up like this is no big deal needs to ride the pine until they earn playing time. Our D line or our scheme or both have sucked all year. We are not a defense anyone is concerned with. Just like our oline is a joke, no one worries about anything other than Worthy and Bijan Robinson. This is a game but when you are getting a free ride and play at THE UNIVERSITY OF TEXAS you better be serious or as Bo stated, hit the portal to fluff town. Sark would never say it but Moore leaving was a blessing and I cant wait for the end of the year to get rid of the rest of the marshmallows!

If Bo Davis is correlating players' reaction of giggling to him yelling at them as "not a game," then maybe he just needs to improve his conversation technique. I wouldn't be the one recording it or releasing it either, but angry coachspeak isn't necessarily going to get the job done on the field right now.

Yes, when ranting out of frustration and anger, one should be so much more careful in the use of metaphors.

While I don't know which players he's yelling at, do 300-lb defensive linemen typically cower at the tone of someone yelling/asking if something is a game? His frustration aside, I don't know how anyone would listen to that and say "yeah this is what we need... someone mad."

Yeah, just let their sorry loser asses continue to laugh and jack around after getting their asses kicked...AGAIN.

Glad we have Bo and not you as a coach. I, and it sounds like most everyone else, prefer this *** chewing, not some candy *** coddling with proper syntax.

There is a time for teaching and a time for *** chewing. They can go together, but in this case I think the 100% *** chewing approach is just dandy.

With this tough crowd, it's much more likely to be "whatever." :)
Texas has been a laughing stalk for a decade. The people who post most frequently around here aren't brand new and hopping on some negativity bandwagon. So, forgive me while I say that calling this a tough crowd is a crock of ****.

We continue to be involved with this team and watch, for better or worse, the games. So, if that makes this a "tough crowd", so be it.

Now there's proof what we all knew, culture is a disaster in Austin. Soft as Charmin and they don't give a ****. Zero trust between players. No pride. The fact we don't have players that will stand up and say what Coach said then we really are screwed.

never played sports huh?

Yeah, everyone here's a grizzled veteran of coaches yelling and us being better for it. We're basically the Junction Boys. I didn't say I wanted Davis to coddle anyone. I just think he's going over the top for little-to-no payoff.

I've seen the BtS stuff for Oregon and Clemson and whoever else. We probably don't get the ***-chewings taped as much as we get the Ted Lasso style rah-rah pick-me-ups. But Oregon and Clemson don't seem to be places that recruits avoid.

I get that Davis was mad. Everyone was mad. But his rant was profane, nonspecific, unmotivating, and calling out 18-to-23-year-old athletes who merely laughed at something. If people actually WERE motivated by Davis to correct their ways, thus ensuring that those ************* would stop giggling and transfer if they don't want to be at Texas, then mission accomplished. Watch the news and message boards for which defensive players leave soon.

As @Handler stated, I think I'd rather see a player try to motivate than Davis.

when it comes to parents, teachers, managers and coaches you can have a wonderful relationship but there needs to be a dose of healthy fear. Insert "respect" instead of "fear" if you like, however the result should be the same.

I loved that swim coach. Really HATED him at times, but I always knew he did the things he did out of love too. He even knocked me silly a couple of times, which even by the 90s was a big no-no. ... but i really deserved/needed it.

Sadly the cancer got him in his prime. I still feel grateful to him 30 years later.

In the eighth grade, we lost a football game and the coach dressed us down on the bus ride home because we were talking to one another. He said players did not have a right to talk to each other after a loss. Then, that summer, the coach announced that all the freshmen football players would have to get buzz cuts. Those two events led me to decide that, much as I enjoyed "playing" football, it was not for me, so I kept my hair and became a lifelong fan rather than a participant. No loss to the sport because I would have never been very good even if I had cut my hair and remained mute after every loss. ;)

That's interesting.
I felt the same way about a lot of that coach "tough motivation" stuff. Never felt like it made me any better, or play harder. I was the type of person that just stayed quite and was part of the team. Some players take to that style of coaching and it makes them better. I guess it takes all type to make a team.

Some of the contrarian takes here surprise me.

We suck. We’re 4-5 and have beaten perhaps one decent team, TCU. No offense but I don’t want to hear the crap about talent unless someone can prove that ISU, OSU and Baylor unequivocally have more talent. Perhaps they have done a better job of player development, but they didn’t start with superior talent.

I’m thrilled by the outburst, and thrilled that someone recorded and shared it. Perhaps they did so to expose Davis and hurt him. Or, perhaps they did so because they agree with him and believe that others outside of the program needed to see and hear it. Whatever the motive, the message has been received very positively in the college football world.

While I am usually wrong about the following types of take, it is possible that the rant — and the release of the rant — could be a positive turning point for the program. Heck, nothing else seems to be working.

For years some have argued that we need to change the culture at Texas. I have tended to disagree but am now rethinking my opinion. They may be right.

The message Bo sent is being heard around the country. I see that as a very good thing, and obviously recruits are taking notice.

Agree Hal - I've always said when it comes to parents, teachers, managers and coaches you can have a wonderful relationship but there needs to be a dose of healthy fear. Insert "respect" instead of "fear" if you like, however the result should be the same.

Yes, in the business world I have also heard the term "healthy tension" - of your managers, their managers or Sr. Mgmt, etc. You could take it a step further and say that business tension is RESPECT, or it is some level of FEAR you could be reprimanded or even fired...

A team is full of all sorts of different personalities. Some get really into the emotional rah rah rah aspect, others are more just-business. Not all the best players are the hyper fired up types. One guy on our high school team wasn’t into the emotional aspect at all. People would question him: “why don’t you get fired up”, “you’re flat”, etc. But he kept making play after play and was selected all District.

Other players can get in a rut and even get a bit lazy and need some emotional motivation from time to time. Others who coast, play half-a$$ed, and don’t really give a flip may need a good butt chewing (maybe that’s what happened here???). Of course, grown adults may laugh at a coach who frequently loses his cool and dismiss him as a buffoon. Selective, infrequent emotional outbursts (emphasis on selective and infrequent) might be effective when needed. And to paraphrase Bear Bryant: some players need motivation, some need you to back off.

His message wasn't to make them cower. He was pretty clear, stop ******* around or get the **** out of here. It was a pretty clear ultimatum.

The other side of this is that Texas has no obligation to renew their scholarship offer. If coach feels that strongly just cut them at the end of the year.

Agreed. Straightforward message: "You are either part of the problem, or part of the solution." Coach Davis showed he is prepared to chaperone any player to the portal if they want to be part of the problem.

Further, keep in mind, this is a 45 second sound bite. We don't know what happened before, or after. There is a lot of context missing. Either way, I'm down with Coach Bo. :hookem:

This is the most excited about Texas football I’ve been since we were up… never mind. I love this. This is what a D1 power 5 football coach in a D1 locker room sounds like. You can’t handle it? GTFO. We get guys as angry and passionate as Bo? That solves a lot of issues. Good on you sir

IT saying the player who recorded and published the video isn't at practice and they have a portal article ready to go, but they aren't going to talk about it further until it's official.

Sark let the team decide the fate of this player.
