Big XII Expansion

Ask anyone from Nebraska and they will tell you the reason they left the Big 12 is because of Texas.

Ask anyone from Nebraska who has better corn between Iowa and Nebraska and they will tell you corn that comes from their side of a man made imaginary boundary is better.

Missouri wanted to bolt and Nebraska, tired of getting their butt whipped on the field by UT, stole their bid. LHN didnt even happen until later.

The LHN was an excuse to leave. Nebraska administration, Tom Osborne in particular, was pissed that they had zero say in the Deloss Dodds Conference. The only thing Deloss didn't get in the organization was the location of the initial football and basketball championships. The suits in Lincoln saw themselves being relegated from #2 in the Big 8 to fourth or fifth in the Big XII. Osborne was outed for the lack of respect and power he had in the conference. Couple that with the sales pitch from Delaney about the additional BigTen revenue from adding the TVs in NYC and BWI, and the case was easy to sell.

OU whined about special snowflake mayfield didnt get a heisman because there was not an asinine conference championship game (In reality, Special Snowflake Mayfield did not win the heisman because he sucks. Only QB to throw an interception against our hapless defense all year). OU got their asinine round robin conference championship game that will eliminate more Big 12 teams from the playoffs in upsets than it will help. I would say OU should realize this after losing the 2003 big 12 title game to kansas state that bringing back a championship game is dumb, but I guess OU got to go to the national title and lose that anyway, so maybe they sooners do not realize how dumb that is. Anyway, OU got their way and we have an asinine rematch game.

OU whined about special snowflake mayfield not getting an extra year he did not deserve, and even though that had been the rule, OU got the rule changed just so their special snowflake mayfield could play another year.

Then Boren and OU whine about needing to expand. Only when they actually looked at what was available for far longer than necessary did OU and Boren realize how dumb expanding would be as there are not other schools that generate enough revenue to offset the splitting of the pot by more schools.

So OU has a conference where it it can get its way, has generally won the conference and most years will only need to beat Texas to win the title and possibly get in the playoff... and yet OU is fixated on an b****ing about LHN and stirring the pot. It is aggiesque for OU not to realize that both Texas and OU have created a conference the two them can win most of the time in the long run and get a playoff spot far more often than if they were in any other conference. I guess it is the okie's internal drive to go west to california when they sense trouble, i do not know, but why the hell OU would want to screw this up is beyond me. Maybe OU is not willing to just let Kansas have basketball, I do not know.

Anyway, OU has the best deal they will ever have, yet Boren and OU complain about this and that. If Texas has been running the conference, it has been working out great for OU.

I agree with all of this. It had nothing to do with MU.

So what your saying is that you wish Mack would have offered Baker a scholarship and you would have avoided the last three years of misery. Got it.

I am very happy Mack did not. Baker is 1-2 against UT and I got to enjoy two wins he delivered us with his terrible play in person. He made Mack a winner in Mack's last home game on Thanksgiving. Baker pulled off a loss against 5-7 Texas last year and nearly pulled it off again this year. I am happy OU did not have a good QB last year or they would have beaten us and Clemson! Mayfield folds under pressure and was the weak link for OU as Clemson and Texas demonstrated last season. The fact he is coming back next year is a blessing and gives me hope for beating OU a year from now. It will be scary whenever Stoops find someone like Sam Bradford again. (Now if I was a sooner, I would regret getting rid of Trevor Knight. That guy was 1-0 against Texas, beat Alabama and now has A&M 6-0. I do wish Mack had signed Knight! I am amazed y'all voluntarily downgraded from Knight to Mayfield.)

The whole "mack brown did not offer" thing does not work for a QB that has a losing record against 5 or more loss Texas teams and is the only guy that managed to throw a pick (not one, but two!) against our hapless defense all year this year.

You seem a little obsessed with OU's QB. The losses you are referring to are related to defense and getting whipped at the line of scrimmage, not QB play.

I am perplexed a QB that is not all that good can get a rule changed just for him and be a factor in getting conference title game rematch added. He has to be one of the worst QBs in the Bob Stoops era (especially after having great hesiman winners), yet sooners love him to death. I just do not get it.

Mayfield's QB rating in 2014 against us was 32.1. In 2013, it was 17.4. He threw 1 total TD in the 2013 and 2014 games combined. When we got some pressure on him in the first half this year, he threw picks. We generally did not pressure Mayfield other than the start of the game and, like many QBs, he is competent enough to make us pay when we did not put any pressure on. Yes, his poor QB play was a major factor in his losses to us. He still almost gave away the game to us this year.

77,

My fear is that he comes back, falls on his face at The State Fair, and Kyler comes off the bench and destroys our defense, unless of course we have a new coaching staff.

They should have added at least 2. Baylor going back to sucking next year once little briles is gone so that's another team we lose in the polls. This conference is dead.

unless of course we have a new coaching staff.

Next year will really depend on whether the current or new coaching staff will field a halfway decent defense.

They should have added at least 2.

I do not necessarily disagree, the problem is there are not two teams that would generate enough revenue unless the Big 12 could pull Notre Dame or someone from another power conference. The teams left outside the power five would weaken the conference more than staying at 10.

A championship game after a ten team round robin schedule has to be the most idiotic decision ever. The Big 12 has a much better shot at the playoffs without the Championship game. The two best teams have already decided it on the field. Giving the loser a second shot is crazy. If the loser of the regular season game wins, neither team makes the playoff.
A Big 12 team that goes undefeated (must have a decent non conference schedule) will be in the playoffs. The Big 12 has easier path to the playoffs without a conference playoff game.

[QUOTE="Htown77, post: 1476237,

Did you actually watch the game you are referring to? The first interception happened because the Tight End bobbled the ball and it bounced into the safety's hands. The pass was on target and on time. The second interception was thrown to a spot on an out route and the receiver was tackled. Obvious PI that was missed.

OU had three turnovers in the first half which resulted in 3 points for UT. How did the QB play almost cost OU the game, again? He led OU to almost 700 yards of offense.

Failure to move the ball in the first half against our hapless defense and almost giving it away at the end. You have to understand last year was the worst defense in Texas football history and this year's worse than that one.

Ask anyone from Nebraska and they will tell you the reason they left the Big 12 is because of Texas. They believed in a conference network which both Texas and OU fought initially and were not happy about the Big 12 offices moving to Dallas from Kansas City which was perceived to appease Texas.
They also blamed Texas for raising the academic standards to play football. All of their woes during the Big XII years were Texas' fault. But, yes, we should all ask Nebraska fans what really happened because they must know.

Three things to think about re Big 12 expansion:

1 - The eight years remaining on the GoR broadcast rights to B12 Conf will allow plenty of time for the B12 schools and TV/Cable companies to evaluate the impact of new streaming options on the broadcast/cable business model. It is going to change - Ask Blockbuster Video if Netflix/Amazon had any impact.

2 - The B12 CCG is just a money grab to produce more live content from the TV contract. It is not designed or likely to elevate a B12 school into the CFP that is not deserving based on wins.

3 - Winning solves all problems. If the B12 schools played winning football with competitive non conference opponents the B12 would be just fine.

OU would be ranked top 5 today with victories over HOU and tOSU.

Agree Pecos, but "winning" needs to be defined as Texas and ou winning plus the remainder of the conference winning against upper half FBS teams (which means no FCS teams).

Viper, agree 100%

OU- HOU, tOSU
TX - ND, Cal
WVA - Mizzo, BYu

At least three qualify.

synopsis of what I've gleaned from sports guys I've listened to on ESPN, Fox, etc. since the "no expansion" announcement:
  • The conference will continue to be weak
  • Texas and OU still being members has kept the B12 afloat
  • 10 team conference with a CCG after a round-robin season is ridiculous
  • Houston and BYU should have been added
  • Houston will loose Herman since his $5mill bonus was based on UH admission to B12
  • The TV money will dwindle since OU and Texas aren't at their top level
  • Recruiting will decline as the stronger P5 conferences not named the B12, will get the top picks
  • The concept of the conference was based on greed
  • Waiting 8 year for the GORs to expire is nutz and Texas and OU can and should negotiate out of those contracts
  • The B12 is dead and doesn't realize it
That's pretty much it as I recall.

You mean, DOOOOMED?

The whole concept of GOR is to make leaving too costly to consider. Leave and see who wants to televise your games that you have no legal right to sell.
