Beto Does it Again

Some of the City/County people that tried things got *****-slapped by the Courts after being sued for trying to supersede the EO.

I don't think that is true. There were new court orders made to combat the bad actors you speak of the emergency powers weren't used as the block. It is simply a way for Abbott to retain power for himself if he ever wants to use it. He could simply show something to be unconstitutional in order to strike it down. The constitution shows his emergency power declaration to be illegitimate itself.

Republicans are just so mean! They don't let the ever increasing number of people who vote vote. What a maroon.

"Property taxes are up 40% since he took office"

While property taxes are certainly a problem (chiefly that they exist at all), but is Beto saying he'll work hard to get housing values down across the state?

I agree. If she was a Republican I am the starting qb for aggy

Demx always say stupid chit but bever back it up. How did Abbott make it harder to vote?

Well, that's the point isn't it. Francis is pointing out real problems. But he isn't explaining how he would solve them because solving them would require libertarian policies. He would double or triple down on whatever bad things Abbott has done.

BobFrank ignores that property taxes are set at the local level. Some areas LOSE money on the school portion because of the redistribution that came about under Robin Hood. BUT...the outlay ALSO increases because of the market driving housing prices up...if BobFrank gets valuations decreased, property taxes will STILL increase precisely because those taxes are how the services get paid for.

And ironically, one could argue that property taxes are fair precisely because renters have to pay them as well since they get baked into the monthly nut.

It is the legislature that sets property tax policies and local boards that appraise
Is Texas the only state with property taxes what increased?
Of course there are instances of county appraisal abuse
BUT if a study could be done I wonder how often the appraised value is much more than sold price?

Part of the problem is that today's sales tend to drive next year's appraisal.

I'd like to see how many widows and widowers get screwed like mom did where the appraisal district treated the transfer upon death as a new sale. Dad passed, she got the death certificate to the County and the CAD jacked the taxable appraised by a couple hundred thousand..

That is wrong, WRONG
I guess her name was not own the title?
BUT isn't she still entitled to some sort of senior freeze on taxes?

A "senior freeze" on the valuation of the property exists.

I just spoke with my sister, who has been an appraiser for more than 20 years. She said the surviving spouse has to be at least 55 years old for the valuation to pass to them without a value reset. This keeps young women from marrying old farts and reaping the tax benefits on any inherited property that may have come to them.

mb, if your mom was over 55 when your dad passed she should have protested that increase.

The home was titled in both names. When they bought it ~16 years ago. At least there was no mortgage issues to contend with since they didn't have one.

She gets some limits as a senior, but I don't believe it is frozen. I think it is capped at 10% per year, or at least was, prior to the Constitutional amendment earlier this year if I remember those correctly.

She was definitely over 55, but I don't know enough about real estate stuff to know if a 'senior freeze' was in place when dad passed...that was almost nine years ago.

All property taxes should be frozen when one spouse hits 65 years old. Those taxes shouldn't change just because one spouse dies, unless the property is sold to another party, changes hands generationally, or the surviving spouse is younger than 55.

Now, the property valuation might change, but the applied taxes should not.

A quick search of the googuls would tend to suggest the complete freeze is school district and some other local things, but not the county portion. However, there are other caps which enter the equation in addition to a deferral of some taxes until the estate is settled.

As near as I can tell, we have seen the school taxes frozen on her assessments.

You may well be right. I didn't go into whether the freeze applied to all taxing entities with my sister. The local ISD is the really big fish though, and if that was frozen then your mom should be OK.

Abbott and friends basically doing what Francis would do to the grid if he were elected. Make Texas Conservative Again.

I’ve heard a little buzz from the left-of-center crowd that ‘solar power saved our bacon in Texas this Summer.’ I have neither confirmed nor debunked it.

Spreading out the power sources seems like a prudent idea—as long as there’s enough reliable power to meet needs in a power emergency.

Ultimately, the State may need to build and operate an emergency coal plant that only comes online during power emergencies. Normally it will be mothballed. Of course that will cost $, as will paying the workers who will train, play ping pong and lift weights in the break room 95% of the year… Maybe bump up the taxes on cigarettes and vapes to pay for it.* Having extra generation capacity is what’s needed. So do it.

*I don’t like licorice, romantic comedy films, artificial sweeteners, or fake meats either, so bump up the taxes on those as well to pay for it. :D

It is deceptive. The sun is shining when it is hot and we have added lots of solar lately. So when we need high power production and the new solar capacity is producing then on the surface you could say "solar power really saved us". It's a worthless statement. It doesn't intelligently explain the situation.

If that same new capacity had been added with coal plants, you could say the same thing. But still worthless. The issue is cost and reliability. Solar doesn't bring either advantage. It is inherently unreliable because it works when it works, but we have no ability to deploy or reduce it as needed.

You have to do this if you want a reliable grid. That also shows how worthless solar and wind are. This cost of redundancy has to be factored into energy source cost.

You could just build the coal plants and use them without any wind or solar.

Mona
I liked and laughed at the Capt Obvious point
But I guess we also have to look really long term to when we move off coal
