Benson was waived by the Bears

Seriously, take off the orange glasses.

Can he outrun people? No.
Can he run people over? No.
Can he make people miss? No.

What else is there in a running back? Sure, there are players who didn't fit neatly into one of those categories. (Emmit Smith comes to mind.) However, if it's 3rd and 4 and you're nursing a lead with 3 minutes to go, do you give it to Benson?

DeadHorse,

Cedric doesn't have break away speed. But he does hit the holes fast. Not sure why you even suggest he doesn't run over people. Does he do it every play? No, but he does give out his licks and you can't deny that at all. Cedric breaking tackles is not debatable. But your last question is because of his attitude is why you can't give it to him when the game is on the line. He's got the skills to play in the NFL. He just needs to work harder and stay out of trouble which is the results of his attitude.

DeadHorse,

You keep running away from your arguments. You have been claiming CEDRIC SUCKED IN COLLEGE through this entire thread.

You said, the only reason UT fans like him is b/c he was good in high school.

When someone told you something to the contrary you defended with how he sucked against OU & how VY was so great against them, going 1-3.

Then when people talk about how great Ced was in college you switch back to the NFL and why he sucks there....and how no one wants to give him the ball on 3rd and 4.

jeez...

nevermind, i feel like im beating a deadhorse

Crying shame when people screw up their opportunities. Cedrick has been a train wreck waiting to happen forever it seems. When Mack came down on him it really seemed to help him for a while anyway. Maybe this will be the eye opener he needs.

I was in Chicago right after Benson got drafted, and a Bears fan excitedly asked me about Benson.

Here was my take on him then, and it's the same take I have now.

He was a WORKHORSE at Midland Lee. I don't have his HS stats in front of me, but I know he was their entire offense. I was at the Lee-Woodlands game at DKR. They just plowed him ahead all game long. He didn't break any huge runs, but he was effective enough to carry Lee to victory.

Then he came to Texas. He ran the hell out of the ball for 4 years here.

The "life span" of a RB is so limited, and Benson ran so hard for 8 years in HS and College, that I think he hit his peak here in Austin. If I was an NFL GM, I would have stayed far away from CB, because I would have been very concerned that he doesn't have much left in the tank. Certainly not enough to now be a workhorse in the NFL for a decade.

It's terrible that he's embarrassing himself and the University with this DWI garbage, but I think his career was in its twilight regardless.

Back to the original topic....how much money did Ced cost himself by being waived? He has to be picked up off waivers under te same contract amount to play this coming year right?...If so, I don't see any teams lining up to pay that amount.

He cruised thru school on a baseball scholarship he was never going to honor,(full commitment), but still got paid. His Midland trouble , and UT/Austin police trouble went away, eventually. It's no wonder he thinks he is made of Teflon.

As a Bears fan i cant say this comes as a surprise. He was down to his last chance after the boating fiasco and with a new RB from the draft and with Benson never really getting in synch with his teammates chemistry wise this had to have been an easy decision for the Bears management. I still hope he picks up somewhere and redeems himself, he was a gamer for Texas no matter what others say. i wont forget his game against Missouri in 2004 when VY was injured and the whole second half was Mock handing off to Benson or Iowa State in 2002 or aggy in 2003 and 2004. He was always good for 100 yards and a TD against everyone but OU and against OU the whole team blew up so hard to blame just him.

c'mon guys - he was much more than a workhorse. he is one of the all time texas greats. i don't have orange tinted glasses on either, because i really think he deserves what he's got, but give credit where credit is due.
deadhorse, you seem like you have an axe to grind or sojmething. how can you deny the guy's highschool and college careers? he's the 6th all time leading rusher in ncaa history for crying out loud.
maybe the guy is a complete *******, but he's a helluva a runer. and then there's your checklist. do you know how important vision is to a runing back? guys that see the play developing seconds before it unfolds? that was one of cedric's strong suits. the guy has football instincts.

I was just gonna comment about the "Westlake safety"... if it's who I think, he went on to win a college championship on the mound and I think picked up the MVP at that CWS, and then got rookie of the year with the A's.

you guys are nuts. he's the 6th most prolific running back in ncaa history. do you really believe that happens for a guy who can't break a tackle and has no speed?
again, i'm no apologist, but seriously people. the shoulder stinger from the colorado game was a more serious injury than he ever led on to and then he had turf toe his entire sophmore season. turf toe to a running back is freaking kryptonite - can't cut, can't plant, no burst, etc.. some of you are out of your minds.

For his football ability alone, I am grateful for the awesome games he had against A&M. He owned those ********, and that's something those of you critical of his career here should take into account especially since they've completely dominated our running game 2 years straight.

Hopefully this will be a cold hard lesson to Benson that football alone isn't going to carry you through life. NFL careers are short, and you have a lot of life to live as a normal joe, not a pompous jackass who thinks the world owes you everything. We all will become has beens, and carrying around that billy badass attitude will make your life extremely dysfunctional in the long run.
