AP Poll

I was initially wanting Bama to beat Georgia, but would like to match up with them in the first round versus the championship. So just hoping FSU loses and we somehow get selected.

I know the ESPN predictor app is algorithm-based, but it seems we actually have a higher percent chance in either direction (Bama over UGA, FSU wins OR Bama over UGA, FSU loses) to make the playoff than UGA winning in any scenario. I think there's a built-in H2H thing that predicts we'll be over Bama with a W no matter what.

And truly, any scenario where Michigan loses is also favorable to us.

Correct, and part of that culmination is the end of the season, where FSU is no longer a top team, as evidenced by their performance last night. It all counts.

• pulled away late from 6-6 G5 team
• needed prayer to beat 6-6 rival
• 3-point win vs. 4-8 conference foe
• lost by 10 at home

FSU? No - Bama

Texas struggled against several teams and lost to a rival too, but we dominated our last two games. Bama just beat the two time undefeated champion convincingly after only losing to Texas.

I feel bad for FSU but if we take the totality of the season and dont cherry pick it, Bama is better than FSU right now. FSU a month ago would be in. Texas a month ago would be out. The decision wasnt made based on only half a seaaon, but rather the full season. FSU right now isn't good enough. Would you bet on FSU to beat Bama right now? I doubt it. Fun debate to be sure.

100% agree that FSU right now isn't good enough. Anyone who watched that ACC championship game could see how pathetic they were on offense, and I'm pretty sure that's what ultimately swayed the selection committee. I doubt if they wanted to see another TCU-style embarrassment this year.

It was really a tough break to lose Travis, but that's part of the game - and we know that better than most, having lost our QB during the 2009 championship game...

You're describing an invitational with the "who's the best right now?" question. A playoff, which oddly enough the CFP has in it's name, is for who's most deserving.

As an easy to see extreme example... If baseball had a 4 team invitational 30 years ago, the SF Giants would have been in - second best record in all of pro ball that year! Instead, MLB had a playoff so the 4 most deserving teams went in based on these standings:

I didn't realize pro sports used subjective polls by morons to determine standings. Serioulsy, why should any of us give a crap about this?

The only problem with this is that its irrelevant to college football. The top 4 is decided by committee who has to take into account a multitude of scenarios. Only 4 teams can get it in, they play uneven schedules and there are 5 big conferences. Therefore, the committee had to look at the totality of the season, just as you put it, to get 4 teams.

This isnt MLB or the NBA where the playoffs are determined strictly by season record. The College Football Playoff literally IS an invitational. You're right about that. The committee determined due to FSU being massively wounded by the loss of their QB, and their subsequent struggles in their last two games, to no longer be worthy of an invitation when there are four other teams playing lights out and also having commensurate accolades.

It's a culmination of season rankings not single game ranking.
I would argue that it is and should be an assessment — right now — of the quality of the team when compared to other teams. In other words, not a “body of work” assessment.
