2025 Recruiting - WBB

I can understand why Chaves plays the point or her high school and club teams; wit the ball in her hand, she is a thread to shoot or drive to the basket every possession. She doesn't have to wait for teammates to get her the ball.

I don't if know her future is at PG or SG in college and professionally. She lists herself at 5'10; so, she's definitely not undersized.

I think there are 5 teams who are the biggest threats to land her:

Oklahoma: relatively close to home. Coach B is all about offense. Aaliyah would most likely average 20 points a game as a freshman. But, she wouldn't be taught how to play defense.

LSU: relatively close to home (but still a long drive). Recent national championship, hall of fame head coach who is also a former Olympian and collegiate PG, NIL opportunities. Large home crowds. Defensive-minded head coach.

South Carolina: far from home. Recent national championship, hall of fame head coach who is also a former Olympian and collegiate PG, NIL opportunities. Large home crowds. Defensive-minded head coach.

Texas: close to home. Would have the chance to succeed Rori at the PG spot. We can't match Mulkey and Staley as far as their PG backgrounds. Our home crowds are getting better, and will get better once we join the SEC. Defensive-minded head coach. So many former Cy-Fair elite teammates on the roster.

Texas Tech: stay home and be the big fish in a small pond. I don't doubt that Tech will get her an NIL opportunity as big as or bigger than any other competitor. The question to me is will Gerlich survive after this coming season, or the following season? I don't think they will make the NCAA tourney; it's been forever since they have. Does that matter to Chavez? Does she want to win at the highest level? If so, Tech is far from that level. As far as Tech landing Chavez, they might need to fire Gerlich after this season and hope a new head coach will bring enough "newness" and excitement to make Chavez overlook their NCAA tournament drought.

I hate seeing in-state front-court prospects like Tac and Roberson not choose Texas. but if playing far away from home is their desire, they should follow their hearts. Maybe they'll get homesick one day and want to come back home. Maybe 3 scholarships is all we had to give for the 2024 recruiting class.

That’s what they think they want until they are actually away from home. I went to college out of state and lasted one semester! Everyone isn’t the same but just like I said with Herron, she will be wearing a Longhorn jersey one day:hookem:

In this class the only one that really would dissappoint me to lose is Aaliyah Chavez. I think she is a generational talent. She knows how to score the ball but if she really wants to become a complete point guard/shooting guard and learn to play tough defense....Come to the Forty.:bevo:

If our seniors for 2024-25 are Gaston, Holle, Faye, and Harmon, that means we will have at least 4 scholarships for the 2025 class. I haven't really even looked at our true "needs" for 2 seasons from now, but no doubt needing depth at PG after Rori's departure will be key. We get smaller up front losing Gaston and Faye, so a post player would be on the list, as well. After that, best available, I guess. Every year us fans covet a "shooter", so might as well add that to the wish list!

Moo I really think she (Aaliyah Chavez) could be the One. We never really know how these talents will perform on the next level but she seems to have that "it" factor. I hope she wants to come to Texas.

I want her at Texas more than I’ve wanted any recruit ever!!!
I would have to agree. A shooting point guard who can score at every level and who seems to give maximum effort would be a great successor to Rori Harmon. While social media has a lot to do with how much visibility she gets, her play is what is drawing the attention.

Made me think of past in-state players who I really wanted badly over the course of several decades; sadly, we lost out on more than we landed:

- Angela Aycock, Lynn Pride (Kansas)
- Shalonda Ennis (SFA/Alabama)
- Kendra Holland (Georgia)
- Alicia Thompson, Renee Hanebutt, Jia Perkins (Texas Tech)
- Tamika Catchings, Ashley Robinson, Meighan Simmons (Tennessee)
- Debra Williams, Laquan Stallworth, Tamicha Jackson (Louisiana Tech)
- Brandi McCain (Florida)
- Vivian Gray (Okie State/Texas Tech)
- Adut Bulgak (Florida State)
- Kelsey Bone (South Carolina / Texas A&M)
- Rachel Hemmer, Ogwumike sisters (Stanford)
- Shereka Wright (Purdue)
- Chandi Jones (Houston)
- Alex Jones (Duke/Baylor)
- Brittney Griner, Odyssey Sims, NaLyssa Smith (Baylor)

It goes without saying that we've got to go all out for Chavez. There have been a couple of frosh wbb players out there throwing out absolutely ridiculous scoring numbers right now, and Chavez is likely in that some category of scorers.

Chavez to Texas would sure change the dynamics of how Texas plays. I find it hard to find clear similarities between Harmon and Chavez. Schaefer would have to change lots of things in how his teams have recently played. From a defense first point guard to an offense first point guard. Schaefer might be able to change philosophies if the right player comes along. Early hints might be who he is recruiting now. Preston and Lee are apparently defensively focused and skilled. Carleton I think of as more offensive oriented but her physicality would play well defensively. So an offensive point guard would fit well…..but certainly much differently. How Preston and Chavez would coexist remains to be seen. Chavez is ball dominant. Don’t know enough about Preston to offer an opinion. My gut feeling is Preston could play well off the ball. Not sure if Chavez would be so inclined. Fun to speculate.

Chavez can probably play 1-3 positions on the court. She's listed at 5'10. Being able to handle the ball, push tempo, pass, and shoot from all 3 levels makes her so valuable with and without the ball. Having her, Preston, Maul, and Booker really provides depth with those who could lead the offense and play at least 3 different positions on the court.

Mooo…you point up how flexible the 4 players would be. I find myself defaulting back to Booker being a forward. Obviously she thinks of herself as a point guard at times. It appears on this year’s team, that Schaefer will play her at point quite a bit. Having 4 that all can play the point certainly is a good thing. Schaefer will figure who plays where and when. Would be great to see Chavez as a Horn. For lots of reasons.

Rebecca Lobo mentioned that "the #1 recruit for 2025" was in Austin watching practice or shootaround today/this morning/weekend. I didn't for sure where that last part. Guessing that means Aaliyah Chavez must be attending the game today.

To correct what I stated above, Lobo commented that (Chavez) attended our practice this morning; hope she enjoyed the game and she got a feel for what it would be like to take over for Rori and play in Moody.

Just our luck that Aaliyah Chavez and her Lubbock Monterrey team were participating in a tourney in Pflugerville this weekend; sounds like Vic was there
