2025 Recruiting - WBB

Aaliyah Crump out of Minnesota is another 2025 recruit who I've noticed our coaching staff gives a lot of attention to on social media. And, she's followed by the TexasWBB Instagram account (which is an exception)

On a rainy day, watched videos of Crump. She’s very offensively skilled. Shoots great, sees floor, passes well, nice handle, tall and long for a guard. She plays face up to basket. She is athletic but is slow defensively. Reminds me a lot of Jacq but more skilled. She would be a matchup nightmare at the 2 or perhaps 3 but couldn’t stay with small quick combo guards. A take all day long as Schaefer could ramp up her defensive intensity.

What the Dickens and Tom Walker? Would Chavez really go north or east or west? Why can’t we figure out a way to influence Chavez to commit to Horns? I’m not talking about NIL. Texas is her home state. She could be that big fish in a big pond at Texas. Her legacy in Texas could be forever sealed. Her influence and pride with and for Hispanics would be off the charts in Austin/San Antonio and everywhere in state. I doubt folks in UCONN or South Carolina or USC could even find El Paso on a map and don’t care about folks down here. Somebody do something. I don’t want to watch Chavez for four years play for Iowa. Anything.

Give her some time to make up her mind. Also, what does El Paso have to do with it? She's from Lubbock.

El Paso? Lubbock? Both kinda west Texas. See….even a Texan can get confused. Chavez needs to move to center of Texas….like Austin. Chavez has been on everyone’s radar for years. I’m sympathetic to giving her time to make up her mind. As long as it’s soon and to Texas.

So, it seems that everyone wants Chavez. Does Vic? It appears to me that her game, while extraordinary, does not really fit what Vic wants from his players. Does she play defense? Will she? He has brought in scorers in the past and molded them to his strategy, but I honestly don't see that happening with her. She is the best in the country at what she does (14-19, with 10 FT) and why would she go to a system that would change that? Curious to hear from others more knowledgeable that I.

Really?...

Vic has 2 of assistants, his best recruiters, following her every move. Blair or Elena (and sometimes Vic) seem to be there every time she takes the court. If she ends up somewhere other than Texas, it won’t be for lack of effort. All 3 are in Virginia this weekend.

I didn't realize Crump had already taken an official visit to Texas.

Aaliyah Crump

Minnetonka (MN)

All Iowa Attack

Destinations in July: Louisville, Chicago (EYBL)

The biggest thing with Crump is her efficiency – she can be a bit volume-ish at times. She is an all-around threat offensively and has produced and displayed all of the requisite skills of a star player. As the efficiency and facilitation skills rise, watch out for her box scores to look more impressive. Defensively and rebounding-wise, she can add some impact – and All Iowa will need it with Addison Bjorn gone with Team USA U17.

Thoughts going into July:

“I’m taking pride in on-ball defense as I have been playing against more high-level players. I want to make sure I can contribute in all aspects of the game – reads and decision making. I want my shot to be more consistent and get to my mid-range more efficiently and physically.”

Completed Official Visits: Notre Dame, Ohio State, UNC, Duke, Texas, UCLA

Finalists: Ohio State, Duke, Texas

CEREBRO SPORTS AI ANALYSIS: Aaliyah Crump is a versatile player known for her consistent performance across various youth leagues. She showcases strong perimeter shooting, as highlighted by her 3PE scores, particularly in the Nike EYBL sessions. Her RAM and C-RAM scores indicate a well-rounded player with significant contributions in multiple areas, including scoring, rebounding, and assisting. Her defensive skills are also notable, especially in the FIBA-W Americas event. Aaliyah has the capability to impact games with her scoring ability and defensive presence, making her a valuable asset to her teams.

I do remember Chavez, Davidson and Crump visiting. They are #1, 3 and 4 players in country. Would be nice to get 2 of 3. Being greedy 3 of 3. Point guard and two 6’-1” guards.

Unoffiical visits, yes, for Chavez and Crump. I was surprised that article stated Crump had visited Texas officially.

Interesting that Chavez is still taking unofficial visits while other 2025 recruits have begun taking their official visits. Guess that could mean she'll take her official visits in the Fall.

I don't want to be one of those people that, when someone turns us down, the Longhorn uber-fan says, "Eeeh, we didn't want her anyway" (happens a lot in football). My question is really, of those players listed which ones love, love, love to play defense. I remember Rori saying that she picked Texas because she wanted to play defense first, and offense second.

Can anyone, who knows a whole lot more about HS players than me, say so and so in that list are more "offense oriented" and probably won't strongly consider the Horns?

Chavez may turn out to be the best teammate in the world; how could we know?

But I have always harbored the concern that she would be a compatibility risk in Vic's system, despite her offensive production.

Definitely don't want every player on a roster to have the same skill sets offensively.

While Vic demands every player on the court play defense and give maximum effort on the defensive side, he's also been quoted many times saying that the game of basketball is a lot easier when you can put the ball in the basket.

Geno Auriemma recruits offensively talented players because he believes it is easier to teach them how to play adequate defense versus teaching them how to shoot at a consistently high level.

I saw a social media post today stating that Crump's Final 3 are Duke, Texas, and Ohio State.
Crump is from Minnesota so I'm impressed that we made her top 3 since it's so far away from home. She's been a target for Vic & Co based on our staff's social media efforts (retweets, likes, etc..) Hopefully their hard work will pay off.
