2024 Texas Rangers

Rangers drop the opener in Philadelphia last night and slip below .500 for the first time in the Bochy era. Hoping to get Dunning back as soon as this week and Eovaldi shortly thereafter. Adolis isnt on the IL yet but he is not day to day because that is just the 2024 Rangers so far.

Meanwhile Houston has awakened from its April slumber and is 10-3 in its last 13 to get back into the AL West race that remains a tight knit group of Seattle, the Rangers and the Stros.

Dunning is back and he starts tonight but four errors doom any chance the Rangers had as they drop a second straight game to the Phillies. It's not just the offense from last year that is missing, the error numbers in just the first two months of this season are already approaching the entire season numbers for last year. Rangers fall to 24-26 and hope to get at least one in Philly tomorrow.

Disgusting loss today to the Phillies. Rangers need to get some pitchers back from the IL plus Garcia and need to get bats ALIVE again. Jung cannot get back soon enough to help the bat situation.

Need to face some R pitchers to get Carter back in the game!

And, as we feared, the Astros are starting to get it together and climbing in the AL West standings. The three-way race that was originally projected - Seattle, Houston, and Texas - is taking shape. And for the Rangers to prevail, they need (1) the sarting rotation to get healthy (and perform to standards), (2) the offense to wake up and perform (it will help when Jung returns to the lineup), and (3) the defense to cut way back on the errors.

The Rangers lose again this afternoon and are now two and 10 in their last 12. They sit three games under the .500 mark and are dangerously close to a 2021 season type driving off a cliff moment. The next two weeks really feel like they will decide if the Rangers are going to be able to tread water until reinforcements arrive or drown

Many things unexpected like

* Athletics out of last place
* Both '23 ALCS teams below .500
* Astros looking really really bad unless playing Oakland

With the loss last night, the Rangers are now tied with the Astros in the loss column and are now 2-11 in their last 13. You can’t make the playoffs in May but you can certainly set yourself up not to make them and right now the math is starting to look worse and worse.

Another day, another loss. That is six in a row now and just because it wouldn’t be Saturday if we didn’t have yet another injury, now it’s Gray to the 15 day IL.

Someone named Gasparito got the start for Texas and went 3 and 2/3 then a combination of Hernandez, Latz (who got the win) and LeClerc finished it off. Rangers go 1-5 on this road trip and come home for World Series mini rematch Tuesday and Wednesday with Arizona in what is the shortest homestand of the season.

Eovaldi pitched three innings tonight in what was essentially a rehab start. Seager with a big 3 run blast and Rangers get their second straight win by score of 4-2 in the first of two games in a mini World Series rematch with the Diamondbacks. Trying to finish a rough May on a good note.

Rangers sweep the home stand against Arizona with a 6-1win this afternoon. Dane Dunning went five scoreless and Seager had another home run to continue his hot streak over the past 8 games. The Rangers have a nice little three game win streak going and head to Miami for a three game set with the Marlins starting Friday looking to scrape their way back to .500.

Seattle has taken two straight from Houston and they have two more in that series with one this evening and the finale tomorrow. Texas sits three games back of the Mariners and 2.5 ahead of the Astros (2 up in the loss column). Even though it is still May, the math suggests that barring some crazy 2002 Oakland A’s like win streak by two of the AL West teams during the last 100 games, the AL West winner will likely be the only AL West team to make the playoffs so the Rangers need to stay within shouting distance of Seattle and ahead of or even with Houston until the reinforcements arrive in about another month to month and a half.

Rangers lose opener in Miami last night and finish May 11-16, 3 games under .500. Seattle is starting to put it together and pull away while Houston seemed to have awakened from their slumber but then had bad last week to fall back to 8 games under .500 for the year. Seager has caught fire lately but not many others showing much pop. The rookies Langford and Carter have both struggled with injuries and with being every day players. That 2-13 stretch was rough but Texas is still treading water and if the Rangers can stay at or just below .500 by July 4 it could be an interesting second half of the season.

Rangers start June with a 7-0 win over the Marlins and Seager now has a 14 game hitting streak going. Rubber match tomorrow in Miami and then home for a series with Detroit followed by a visit from the Giants next weekend in the Bochy Derby Arlington version.

Rangers batting in top of 7th, up on Miami 4-0. Heaney apparently pitching a gem today - 6 innings, 4 hits, 7 K, no walks! Adolis Garcia has a HR for the Rangers.

Rangers take rubber game in Miami 6-0 and pull back to within 1 game of .500. Seager got a hit which takes his streak to 15 straight games. Scherzer threw a bullpen session yesterday and later this week will throw BP so he is at least actively moving again instead of just 100% on the shelf.

The Rangers bats took the early part of the week off losing the first two to the Tigers by frustrating 2-1 and 3-1 scores. The Tuesday woes saw Seager's hit streak end at 15 games. But they woke up yesterday scoring 9 runs to win one of three from Detroit. Scherzer threw another session Tuesday night and may be in line for a rehab start next week. Evan Carter may be headed to longer IL and the talk is that he won't be back until July. 3-2 so far in June and the Rangers need to claw their way to .500 or a little better by the All-Star Break and really hope that the reinforcements equal a hot second half. Day off today then three with SF this weekend in Arlington.

Hope Corey gets back quickly - the lineup needs his bat.

Bochy didn't seem too concerned last night after the game. I suspect Corey may only miss 2-3 games as a precaution. But your right, we need his bat in the lineup....

We also REALLY need Gray & Scherzer back in the rotation. Langford should be back shortly but I'm not fully sold on him yet. DeGrom is out until what, August???

Urena good pitching has been a very pleasant surprise.

Here are the standings today.

Mariners are on a bit of a hot streak at 8-2 in last 10 games. Tough at home and less so on the road...

On radio yesterday Bochy seemed hopeful Seager would be back in day or so but you never know with hamstrings. Seattle is putting some distance on the rest of the west and Texas heads up there next weekend for what could be a pretty important June series.

Meanwhile, I was only joking when I said the Hornfans baseball board should pool some money and put it on the Royals to win it all since Will Smith was now in KC and riding his personal three straight WS wins with 3 different teams but lo and behold look who would be in the playoffs as the second WC if they started today, the Royals who sit in the same spot Texas was when the Rangers made their run last year. If KC wins it all we have to start asking, if the question wasn't already out there, just what is Will Smith doing right in life?

Rangers lose 5-2...middle relief gave up key runs plus bats just didn't get it done.

Rangers are not going to win many games only scoring 1-2 runs, even 3 many nights.

Gray made what amounted to a rehab appearance yesterday in relief of Heaney throwing 2 and 1/3 and 37 pitches, but the Rangers bats are still slumbering and Texas lost 3-1. After what is more and more looking like a dead cat bounce a week ago the Rangers are back to consistently losing series and have fallen 4 games under .500. Heaney is now a hard luck 2-7 with multiple losses where he pitched well and got little to no run support. Eovaldi looks to get Texas back to winning ways today in the series finale with the Giants.
