2024 Season updates

Anyone who follows college baseball closely had to know that it was only a matter of time before Schlossnagle made aggy a juggernaut. Getting to Omaha his first year down there and hitting the portal and recruiting like he did at TCU but now with the better facilities and NIL money of aggy he is going to have them well positioned for years to come and Texas better step up or face some rough times ahead with the move to the SEC.

Add in LSU, Vanderbilt, Ole Miss, Miss aggy, Florida, and Alabama and you will see that baseball is the exact opposite of football ahead of the move.

It's so obvious how mediocre the Big XII is this year. We're 9-7 playing the worst ball in recent history or maybe ever, yet we're in 4th place. The least number of total losses in the conference is OSU at 25-13. This was the year in a weak conference to dominate and it looks like Oklahoma figured it out.

We have 1st place OU, 3rd place OSU, 9th place UCF and 10th place Kansas left on the schedule with UT Arlington and Sam Houston as the final Tuesday games. Unless we hit a hot streak I could see us going 8-8 or 9-7 over the last 16 games leaving us some where around 30-25 on the season. I don't think that gets us into the post season.

After Oklahoma sweeps us in Norman next weekend, the conference race will essentially be over. But today I’ll be tracking 7 conference series match-ups (two either rescheduled or suspended yesterday due to weather) as if we still have a shot at winning this weak conference. Am I being too optimistic, or too pessimistic? :smile1:

Oklahoma and W. Virginia entered the weekend tied for 1st in the Big 12. The Sooners went on to sweep the Coogs in Provo while the Mountaineers were swept by Tech in Lubbock. The fortunes of these two teams changed quickly, as the Sooners begin to create some real separation in the conference race.

I did a rough estimate of the number of total HR's this team will hit this year. I came up with 106. (i actually came up with 96 for the guys whom i think will start or get significant playing time and then looked at a few outside that group and gave a few to them but that may be too many) so 96-106.

That would be second best in the last 10 years with an outside chance at beating the number one team, 2022 at 128.

Do you take the over or under on that total?

Pulled up my estimate for HR's for the year....96-106. We are on pace to hit 106 as of today (only counting rest of the regular season). Just need more consistency from the offense and the lineup Pierce makes out.

I would drop that to the lower end of the projection. We're actually playing some decent teams in the coming weeks and we only have one more Tuesday layup game.

Currrent Standings (remaining Conf. schedule):

OU 15-6 - 2 games ahead (@tech; Baylor, @Cincinatti)
OSU 14-7 - 1 game ahead (@Texas; Tech; @houston)
WVU 14-7 - 1 game ahead (@Cincinatti; KSU;@TCU)
Texas 13-8 - (OSU; @UCF; KU)

Texas has a chance to move up a spot if they can just take 2 of 3 from OSU this weekend.

Going to be tough to win 1st, need a sweep of OSU and really need Tech to sweep OU. Don't think Tech will do that and I don't see Baylor or Cincinatti helping out much so we might be SOL.

At this point, just need the defense to quit making errors, pitching and offense to be consistent before the playoffs if they expect to make any kind of run.

Because we have lost so many Friday night games and Tuesday night games and won the weekend games, if seems that our night time record on the season could be pretty bad. Anybody happen to know what our record is at night versus day games?

...it seems that our night time record on the season could be pretty bad...
I've had the exact same thought, but am too lazy to go through the schedule and do the math. Do our players maybe have night vision problems? Serious question...

I’m sure everyone by now has seen Sunday night’s dramatic photo of Duplantier on the mound, bringing the wrath of god down upon the godless, heathen Sooners…

...but could this be the kind of divine intervention that turns around an entire season? I want to believe…:smile1:

Thanks for sharing! I had not seen this and could be one of the best pictures I've ever seen. Pretty awesome! Imagine the randomness of catching this pic.

The top section pulled away from the framework and folded down. This has probably been going on for a while and last night the last few bolts stripped out. Maintenance crew removed the metal sheets that had fallen down and we played the game but with a later start time. I wouldn't be surprised if they had it all put back up before tonite's game.

Im down at DFF now for tonites game. Workers have put up a green mesh in place of the metal panels they took down so the batters eye is back up. They should prolly stick with the mesh so the wind can blow thru.

In retrospect, the BYU series loss is the only WTF--THAT SHOULD NOT HAVE HAPPENED event this season. The occasional and random mid-week loss to a crappy team is part of this strange and often cruel game. Aside from the BYU series, this was an overall pretty decent regular season.

And, more importantly, it looks like we're moving upwards approaching our peak at the perfect time of the season. Pitching is finally coming together. When some bats are cold, others get hot. Overall, the bats are good. We will be a very dangerous 2 seed. Not too different from last year when we waltzed into the Miami regional and punked them in their own backyard.

:bevo::bevo::bevo:

I would say the BYU and Washington series are at top of the list of WTF moments along with the lost weekend at Minute Maid. Win one more game each of those weekends and the Horns would be in line to host a regional. Still, Texas is peaking at the right time but the inconsistency has been what kills them so nothing can be taken for granted.

It would be nice to at least finish second in the B12 so that we get a first-round bye in the conference tournament. I think we need to win tomorrow and Okie State needs to lose at least one game of its proposed double-header against Houston tomorrow for that to happen. Okie State is creating a lot of suspense here in the final weekend of the regular season as they’ve yet to play a game due to weather.
