Deez toils at a higher level. Hell, I've got two master's degrees and I scroll past some of his stuff as it is deep and hurts my brain when I come here for a distraction. Some of those multiple quote back and forths that those two do are too much for me to dig into if I'm at a soccer/basketball/softball game killing time.

Between this Rep and Boebert representing a rural CO district there are some really regressive thinking districts in CO.

It's a different time, my friend. I was at the tail end of those shows but would only offer that kids in this time have different, equally as entertaining shows to them, that don't have significant race stereotypes.

I'd imagine before the horrors of WWII became known, Jewish stereotypes along with jokes were more prevalent. Evolution isn't a bad thing.

I couldn't find any clarification of who he called "Buckwheat". The Twitter thread referenced Rep Ted Sullivan (D) who is white but it was unclear whether he was the target of "Buckwheat" or responded to the slur.

At least one of the African American House members took umbrage to the comment.


Not sure any historically racial slurs should be used in any context in this day and age.

That is why I despise the application of ‘those times’ to these times, they were different and one does evolve. As for entertainment today I frequently comment to my wife how easy it was for Movies and TV to make the ‘f’ word seem normal common place language, as in every other sentence. I’ve been out of the work force for several years but it wasn’t common then and I do not believe it is like the entertainment industry would have you believe today. Yeah yeah, I’m old fashion but there is civilized conversation and then there’s filth. Filth definition has (and will continue) to evolve too.

I would have bet against this after the January 6 **** show, but now I have to agree with Luntz based on the Liz Cheney controversy that shouldn't be a controversy. The fact that it is is pretty indicative of where the party is. It's still very much Trump's play thing, and I don't see anybody beating him if he tries to run again. It's sad.

I rarely use the F-word in a work setting but it's not that uncommon. At Starbucks I had a SVP that would use it for effect both in public settings (team meetings) and in my 1:1. It certainly got your attention when she used it. At Nordstrom I had a CIO that used it multiple times over the course of a single hour of a C-Suite meeting in every meeting he was in.

The more I spend with executives at large companies the more commonplace I believe it is to use that word.

As with most behaviors, it's still less acceptable to use that word in the lower levels of the organization.

This is the report that suggests that Sullivan was the target. It makes little sense. It seems pretty clear that he was directing it to the member who was trying to interrupt him at the back mic. (Interrupting at the back mic is normal in parliamentary debate - not considered rude.) Once that person is identified, we'll know for sure.

It's not just the f-word. I see foul language routinely used in articles printed in supposedly reputable newspapers. That didn't used to be the case. It's not that I'm too good for profanity. I use it from time to time, but I'd never use it in a professional setting (whether speaking or in writing). It's just tactless and needlessly coarse and unprofessional. I can't imagine using foul language in court, but I'll bet that's coming.

I see. I've noticed the same thing. It has become a very versatile word. I once heard a good friend use it as a noun, verb, adjective, and adverb in the same sentence.

I have no idea if I'm changing their minds or if I'll ever change their minds. Here's what I do know. First, acting like a jackass or being disrespectful definitely will not change their minds. Changing another person's mind requires respect. Second, being disrespectful does not enhance my arguments, and being respectful does not diminish them. Third, by being respectful, I am setting a better example - both for my ideology and my faith than I would be if I was disrespectful.

But if you can tell me the upside of being disrespectful, I'm open to hearing it.

-Trump realizes that his age would be a great drawback in the general election.
-He acts as the "kingmaker" in the GOP, steering the nomination to a candidate he favors.
-The GOP balances the ticket with regards to gender or race to enhance the appeal to the electorate.

Does this alternate scenario hold up to scrutiny?

The big flaw in it is that it requires Trump to have the self-awareness to see that his age would be a drawback and that his ego would tolerate someone else getting the attention. Obviously he hates and is humiliated by the idea of losing, so I don't think he'd run if he thought he would lose especially in the primary, becaue he'd have no one to blame but himself. However, at least right now, though the January 6th riot is politically toxic in a general election, it clearly did very little damage to him among Republican voters. That's why Liz Cheney is in trouble.

And what's very telling about Trump and his influence is that his preferred conference chair is Elise Stefanik (R-NY). I generally like Stefanik. She's young and well-spoken and frankly, kinda cute, and all of that plays well in her moderate, North Country New York district, which might otherwise elect Democrats. (Outside of the New York City metro area, New York Democrats are more moderate.) However, she has a significantly less conservative record than Cheney does. Her big asset is that she's a bigger Trump loyalist than Cheney is.

I think a big factor will be the 2022 elections. What's going to happen to the Republicans who voted to impeach? If they win their primaries decisively, then Trump might be more cautious. However, if they all or mostly get defeated, I think he'll definitely run again barring some major health problem.

Agree. I’m going to try to work the phrase “they get all the nickels” into a conversation today. Like, “I wish I would have gone to that Austin school, UT grads get all the nickels”.
