2024/25 Portal Transfers

So now that our season is (regretfully) over, it’s time the coaches and Sark are a moment to breathe, then start preparing for 2025. Given this astute audience - what are the top needs for immediate impact portal transfers we need to target to continue our march?
We currently have 2 DT, a LB, a P

Maybe a DB or two, a experienced OL, TE, a K, maybe 1 WR if Bond and Golden declare, another DT for depth only…
So to sum it up to cover the portal losses not including w3 we got…

2 WR
1TE
2OL
1DT
1LB
2DB
1K
I don’t think Sark will take 10 more.

What UT doesn’t need- RB, QB

There are lots of athleti, big humans in the OL pipeline. If it starts to look like the route to a starting OL position at UT is to go somewhere you can play immediately ..then portal...that can screw up the pipeline.

Totally agree. Being known as the "program of second resort" can and will destroy a program. Only to fill an existing need, and in my opinion, only for a prospect moving up not moving to move. Players have always slipped through and been ignored during the recruiting process, but not a guy doing four teams in four years.

Yes, four teams in four years smacks of not being good enough, just chasing the money or both. I think the money is huge; they want to get it now and the transfer portal probably pays well. Too well. The hype machine picks up and they can seem like the answer to our problems. They know that. I'm sure the film tells the real story so theoretically, we wouldn't overpay but it's like the Austin home market a few years ago. Old worn out homes were being sold for way beyond their true value because people just wanted to be here. So, it's the same thing in the portal. I don't know the back-up situation with the team. Sark started who he started and those who are leaving need to be replaced. Is the natural growth pattern of the back-up stack going to be good enough? Like I said, I don't know.

It also smacks of someone who is a problem and can't fit in anywhere. There are those that can really jack up a locker room and I think Sark and company are really good at not letting that happen.

I hear you. But I was only addressing the 4 year/4 transfer problem child. But if it's someone who is looking for money and a national championship (maybe 3-year player at the same school or a grad student) then hopefully, they're out there. We do it for other positions.

The portal has essentially become unrestricted free agency for the players. That has the potential to ruin college football. If I were king of college football, I'd set up the portal like this:

1. As an undergraduate, you get one shot at the portal.
2, If you have earned a degree and still have athletic eligibility remaining, you get one shot as a Graduate Transfer.

That would encourage an athlete to pick a school more carefully and develop as a player in their system, instead of jumping around to school after school in search of more instant playing time.

Or….more immediate money.

Hey By, the Austin housing is still the same. Wife and I look up prospective values all the time and I can verify that it is astonishing what some very small old houses on tiny lots will bring.

Or refund the money to the prior school if a player jumps ship.

So at the moment have we signed any OL in the transfer portal? I'm thinking that's a problem to work on.
I’d go for a total of 2-3 upperclassmen OLs. That’s our biggest need. Maybe 1 more DL. The DT from Purdue is supposed to be pretty good, but we may need another upperclassman DT starter from a decent or better team. . Our interior DT talent base is promising, but young.

I haven't looked in a bit. Our home seems to be holding steady based upon info my mortgage company sends to me.

I don't care if he wins the Jim Thorp award

PASS!
That guy - hope he’s matured. Such talent, but his first 3 years of college have been massively disappointing and underperforming of his potential.

Wish him well, but too big of a locker room risk. Other fish in the pond to go after. We want Taaffe’s….not head cases.

Per OTF, USC OL Emmanuel Pregnon could make a decision as early as today after being in Austin over the weekend.

Oregon appears to be the main competition.

It had a short update on a few Texas players entering the portal...

"Signs are pointing to them leaving. These are well-known players. I wouldn't post if there wasn't serious smoke."

"We are monitoring multiple Longhorn players who could enter the portal this week. This group includes existing starters and key back-ups. In fact, we believe at least one existing starter is likely to hit the portal. We will not release that name in case he ultimately decides to return. But at this point, we think the player has already made that decision."
