2024/25 Portal Transfers

Hope this is true from Nahlin…

Wow.....this is like a scene from the Twilight Zone. Players making stupid money and given there's virtually no regulation all it takes is a handful of irrational programs and suddenly your championship caliber team is "stolen" away. While that's the new landscape and certainly Texas should be able to compete with anyone, I'm growing to dislike it more and more each day. Buying a national championship may soon turn out to be the norm.

Take me back to the SWC and the wishbone.

I don't like this at all. I understand NIL money. I don't like the portal stuff. It's tampering in my view. It's tortious interference with a contract. Or is there a contract? If not, there needs to be. I understand people need to transfer for a variety of legitimate reasons beyond pure money. Let them transfer then without the right for NIL money the first year they transfer. If they are to be allowed to break a contract then that is their penalty. Of course, they'll stack double the money in the remaining years but at least the player can only transfer once and has to gamble on themselves for that first year with no money. And I'd say, no approaching a first year enrollee at all until the season in the fall is played (all the way thru the championship game).

There's probably some holes in there but imagine if Hill, Simmons and Wingo bailed on us. It's ridiculous. And if they did, it would forever end any loyalty to players from the fans. We just go to the games and hope those guys in burnt orange (or white) win. Otherwise, who cares about recruiting or anything else. Instead, we will root for those smart alumni who spent their college years in the library and hope they make enough money to buy players. Those BMD's will be the true team.

I think that is exactly how a lot of other schools are feeling after having their rosters pilfered. We can poke fun at OU and accuse Venebles and culture for those 20+ players that left, but I suspect tampering and NIL money had plenty to do with it.

Fortunately we have the deep pockets to keep most players. I know Bama thinks we tampered with their roster last year with both Bond and Niblack.

I agree this current system is stupid and something has to be done but I am happy that “We’re Texas”.

Just like there are scholarship limits, possibly the NCAA can limit the number of transfers per year, say 2 grad transfers and 6 portal transfers.

D Williams? What's his first name?

Lots of buzz on Johntay. Just rumors now but crazy if true. Hey we could have him back…

Dang - that’s really unfortunate if true. JTC is a young man similar to that of Denver Harris - so talented but can’t get outta his own way, thus the talent is diminished/squandered.

First off - I hope it’s not true and he goes on to do great things with his life. Second, if true, I hope he finds a mentor/coach that helps him get it together and goes in to do great things in life.

My thoughts as well. Some big programs with big checkbooks are out shopping and doing so in an absolutely legal way, just maybe in a slimy, unethical manner. So the question is - do you fight fire with fire and get down in the pig pen with them so you can remain competitive while this (hopefully) gets sorted out? Or do you take the high road and let the carpet baggers entice talent with millions of $$$ to 18-22 year olds, only to end up in the land of the Las Vegas Bowl with an 8-5 record?

This is a master class/study in business ethics /sports management currently underway that will be remembered, talked about, and studied forever on what to do/not do.

It feels like the bottom of what I love about college football is/has already fallen out.

Agree, as to your postulating, I'll take the 8-5 if it means not losing ones integrity. Heck I sat through much worse and am still coming back so if push comes to shove I'll do it again if it means I can still hold my head up. Of course if things really got bad I could be back in the running to get some better seats. :smile1:

What a complete meltdown. Lots of talent and a huge future, based on comments and results he just has the low life mindset. No telling how much money has been handed to him already and his actions have cost him. Lots of teams with no standards will still offer him money but it will probably have conditions now and be less than it should be given his potential!!! Glad a cancer is gone from Texas!!

On his last potential td drop, he probably saw 3 balls coming his way. If he had caught the one in the middle, he might still be at Texas.

As a reminder, any Texas players who want to enter the portal have to do so by today.

All quiet on the western front

However, we may see those names become public news through Friday.
