Wow. Great story. Thanks bud. What an experience for this young man and you as well.Dionysus suggested that I provide some context, so here goes. This is a HornFans story. (Sorry if I get carried away.)
My grandson, now 6’ 2” 217, just started playing high school football in April, in Mexico. In 2019 he attended school in Ireland (no football), and when he returned to Mexico for school in the fall of 2020 there was no football due to Covid…until literally April, 2022, 6 months ago.
He tried out for and made what was essentially an all-star team, the Borregos, in Monterrey. Next he was named a captain, to the chagrin of many parents there whose sons had been playing in Mexico for years. The Borregos went undefeated and they won the championship.
Unlike most parents here, his parents didn’t know anything about American football and frankly, they didn’t care. “Rodri” became interested in football because of his obsessive grandfather who started taking him to Texas games at an early age. That included a trip to the USC game at the Coliseum in 2017 where we took a picture with then President Fenves.
After the Borregos, I explained to the family that if he was to have any chance at D1 football (his dream) in the States, he would have to play his “senior year” in the US. Easier said than done. Due to UIL restrictions in Texas and worse, CIF rules in CA, he could not play in 2022. So essentially, unless he reclassified as a Junior and sat out a year, he would not be able to play here.
Enter IMG. No such restrictions in FL. We sent IMG his highlights, and the LB coach was very encouraging. They wanted him, so he went to Florida and started, game one, for the Varsity White team. While most of his teammates had been practicing since July, due to visa restrictions, he couldn’t join the team until August 1.
In August, I contacted SabreHorn, knowing his connections to the Texas program. SH saw the highlights and was encouraging, starting a process that culminated in the unofficial visit to the ISU game.
His mother and yours truly attended. It was one heck of an experience, and folks like CDC (and his office) and Taylor Searels, UT Recruiting Coordinator, were extremely helpful. Taylor was wonderful.
At the event, Rodri was able to connect with LB Coach Choate, so we shall see. Of course, we are working all angles, and
looking at other schools. But Texas is the dream, and there may now be a glimmer of hope. Rodri has the physical attributes and the drive, but he’s raw. He also has people skills off the charts. (I’ve been in Sales for 45 years and have achieved quite a bit of success, but at age 17, he possesses intangibles I only wish I had.)
The Texas visit and this fabulous opportunity would not have happened if not for HornFans! For that, and SabreHorn’s efforts, I (we) will be forever grateful.
