2023-24 Transfer Portal Thread (CLosed-Opens APRIL 15TH)

While NIL has introduced plenty of challenges in collegiate athletics, methinks this is perhaps one area where it can really help by providing transparency to poor culture fits.
Sark has said many times that he wants the player to come to Texas because that is where he wants to be. The Nil will take care of itself after that.

Perhaps we are hyper focused on this position because many of us believe that this team is championship caliber, and that we should (not might) make a run at a national championship. With that in mind, we appear to have two “potentially less than optimum position, groups,” DT and maybe the secondary. We appear to have recruited aggressively in the secondary, not so much at DT. That seems to be catching up with us right about now.
ii think we have recruited DT aggressively, just havent panned out as well as we would like.

Poms, I don’t believe that Bo Davis was a great recruiter. The hope is that Kenny Baker will be better.

The jury is still out on 22 although Ross is gone. For 23, Mitchell has not evolved as quickly as we had hoped. He needs to contribute this year. (Word was that he was on portal watch recently.)

For 24, we might end up doing better, but it will still take at least another year. That is, unless someone like Alex January surprises everyone.

22 - Ross (gone), Bryant, Bledsoe

23 - Sydir Mitchel, anyone else?

24 - Alex January, Melvin Hills

Hopefully Bryant, Bledsoe, and/or Mitchell will turn into impact players this year. It’s needed from at least one of them. But if not, I don’t think it’s unreasonable to say that the position has not produced as we would had hoped.

And as I have said before, we need Alfred Collins to stop flashing and start dominating. Seriously, if he makes the kind of improvement we saw from Sweat and Murphy, it will go a VERY long way towards solidifying the position and allaying our concerns.

So true. No one will forget the accolades from that Alamo Bowl performance. Since then, he seems not to have progressed. Everyone believes he can be an elite player. As you said, it’s now or never.

I have to wonder if he has the fire to be great. To be dominant. So far, I would say no. Perhaps Kenny Baker can get more out of him than Bo did.

The db group like the te group is puzzling to me. I have seen Texas recruit at a ridiculously high level for both yet we continue stockpiling those 2 groups. I thought Helm was a throwback to 2008 when our receiving group caught anything thrown their way. JT was a great talent but Helm was no drop off in my humble opinion. We have Juan Davis as well as several more yet we are till reportedly recruiting more te's. As for the DB's, either we are recruiting the wrong ones or not developing them adequately. Seems like we are 3-4 deep at every db position. Just my 2 cents.

On DT Damonic Williams from OTF:

"At least twice on Thursday, Texas and at least one other college program were contacted by Damonic Williams' agent asking for "more". Yes, that's a tried and true negotiating tactic. I don't blame an agent for trying, nor should you. The response? Texas did not budge. So Williams announced for OU last night...Yes, NIL should be there. But it should be the last thing discussed, not the first. I'm not so sure that was ever the case in the Williams recruitment, even from the very outset, and perhaps why the juice just wasn't worth the squeeze."
A college transfer's "agent" is contacting UT and requesting more money. I was sympathetic to the argument that Universities were making millions off the backs of their players - on the other hand, this blatant money grab completely obliterates the quaint idea of playing for the honor of your alma mater.

I think most of these players are transfering from their "alma mater".

i wonder if they get a lump sum or they get something weekly. Is it a contract where they are compelled to stay? i am guessing its on a yearly basis seeing how they move around so freely.

Even though i am sure UT is generous when it comes to NIL i suppose many milk every cent they can get. So even though we pay well there are recruits that want the moon so we end up letting them go to the highest bidder.

It's time the players just acknowledged they signed for the money. Of course, most people pretend it's otherwise. Just be honest. Let's get it all out in the open. Let the fans know they truly are mercenaries and be true to your school is a fantasy.

Of course, the fans are "Just win baby." To me, I'm not sure what I'm rooting for. I guess I'm rooting for the NIL money.

Can I get a T-shirt?

Disappointing the many enemies of the State of Texas and UT still remains as my inspiration. Thinking that these players represent The University left me decades back.

Everything I’m reading and hearing is that this is a great get, and possibly a hidden gem. Apparently he is fast (10.6), twitchy, and smart. Last year, against UNLV, who possesses one of the best receivers in the country, Cole basically shut him down. Also last year, in game 1 against USC & Caleb Williams, I don’t think they completed a pass against him.

I’m not worried about his size, at 5’10” or 5’11.” It sounds like this guy is a player. Also, it may have happened because of the Nansen connection.

Not sure how recent.

6721,

I hate NIL and believe it will destroy college athletics. The portal is worse than leather helmets. The NCAA thinks they were losing control, but they are too stupid to realize that you can't lose something you NEVER had.

Bring back cheating!

WE knew when SMU was the first school to buy a house and about the job the fruit cake guy gave his mother.

WE knew when NIKE made Ron Curry the first $100,000 payoff.

WE knew when the TransAm went to Highland Park and the Cutlass went to Moore Hill.

WE knew when Murray got paid to clean the printing presses although Rod had NO printing presses (NCAA still doesn't know they didn't exist)

WE knew Warren Bankston Nissan had 30+ Z cars on the SMU football team

WE laughed when Barry begged Bosworth to only drive the Corvette around Norman & leave the exotic in the garage

WE knew the future Hype$man winner couldn't read on a second grade level and could only do single digit addition & subtraction.

With their huge budget & fleet of private investigators why didn't the NCAA have a clue?

And the list goes on and on. Get rid of the worthless dumbasses in Indianapolis and self police.

I hate NIL as well and the portal as structured now. Maybe the SEC and B1G will take matters into their own hands and layout reasonable rules, superseding the worthless NCAA. Of course, if they do, I suppose it would only be functional if other conferences agree and adopt the same rules.

This is so complicated legally that I don’t think anybody has a sense yet of where this is going. All we know is that NIL and the portal have compromised the quality of the game, and that changes and manageable rules are needed.

Too much zone..so the problem is coaching.

I've said this before, as have others, it's time for contracts that bind the players to the school. The only thing left would be a draft but that'll never happen.

Doesn’t make me proud Duke. Maybe my losing my ticket arrangement next year will not feel so bad - who knows how this will spill over into fandom.
