2023-24 Transfer Portal Thread (CLosed-Opens APRIL 15TH)

We have to assume that Sark and his staff are feverishly working the portal quietly - but it would be nice to see the results appear soon. There are some needs for the Longhorns that the portal guys can fill.

I imagine they're only looking at a few positions.

Is anyone else kind of wanting to see a Colorado dumpster fire this year
you know, just for entertainment purposes?
Having lived there and knowing colorado’s current residents, I altogether hope for dumpster fires, forest fires and all other conflagrations every year.

Spend your Petro Dollars in Utah, Idaho and Montana instead.

I might get beaten up for this take. If so, so be it.

We have all observed the character and the nature of Deion Sanders for decades. He is what he is. A highly self absorbed phony. Sorry, it’s true.

So many people have tried to suggest that this individual really cares about kids and that he is a leader of and a role model for young men. Few things could be further from the truth.

I think that the media is finally turning on him. They have no credibility either, but the overwhelming evidence is now just too difficult for even them to ignore. It will be fascinating to see how long he hangs on at Colorado. That program was in a bad way when he got there, but now it’s even worse…and that is hard to fathom. The school would be wise to move on before it gets even worse.

Duke,

It is a broke school in a broke state. Their best recruiting classes came from using hookers to recruit - NO NOT BARNETT! It took them nearly a decade to raise $300,000 for a practice bubble. Their fans rank with State Penn and FSU in being the most ignorant in D-1.

If Sanders has a contract, they don't have the money to pay him off. Never forget the infamous words of President Hoffman when she said, "What do you mean we owe him almost $10 million?"

Who would take that job other than Tom Herman, Art Briles, or Todd Graham?

Have to admit that Art Briles offense in the BigTen would be amusing.

Sounds like it came down to a pretty big NIL number and there were lots of hints out there from IT and OTF and others that Texas would play ball but not reset the market or upset the locker room by throwing an absurd amount at Williams.

Damonic Williams commits to Oklahoma.

Booooooo!!!!!

Like most Texas fans, I’m disappointed. I’ll make a few observations that might not be popular.

I didn’t love the Lamborghini/Four Seasons strategy. Doesn’t that send the message that we’re willing to pay whatever it takes? Such treatment can be overwhelming.

When the next portal player doesn’t get the same treatment, could that send a message to that player as well?

Perhaps we misread the kid, or overplayed our hand. Finally, this was the first big challenge for Kenny Baker.

I’ll add though that if William’s goal is to maximize his draft stock and to play on a championship caliber team, one has to wonder about his choice.

I get the transfer portal need. I get trimming up the roster via the portal. But, having built a team roster on character, performance, and recognition one really must be careful of tipping the long term team chemistry for the immediate success. Our receiver room was a no brainer. We had to build back up quickly. But to me, Williams was not some ‘cant miss’ Sweatt remake. Good, maybe pretty good, but no cinch AA. Not sour grapes. But I do prefer the Murphy physique to Sweatt. Apparently, so does the NFL. To break the bank for a modest upgrade, if any, would be stupid. This NIL/portal deal is like a Hungarian plate spinner exercise in juggling.

The bidding war is a problem. I have no idea how good he is, but OU 's willingness to outbid us indicates he's gonna' be a nice fit in the middle of their line. Unfortunately, the amount of NIL money offered (and this isn't offered by the university right?) is an indication of what the school thinks about the player. Of course, during the under the table days, the players probably also knew who was getting what. So, the hurt feelings syndrome was there. But this is a high profile transfer situation. A new game and when a player like Williams waits it out, he becomes the focus of all the news and all the players are watching.

I don't think OU necessarily outbid eyes.
From what I've read, Sark wasn't willing to go any higher at risk of creating tension in the locker room.
He's not going to allow one player to have an nil deal way over the head of any other player.

Perhaps we are hyper focused on this position because many of us believe that this team is championship caliber, and that we should (not might) make a run at a national championship. With that in mind, we appear to have two “potentially less than optimum position, groups,” DT and maybe the secondary. We appear to have recruited aggressively in the secondary, not so much at DT. That seems to be catching up with us right about now.

If we had a ceiling then we were out-bid. That's how it feels to me. I hope he turns out to be not worth it.

Would be better to have him than not because the D-line needs bodies to keep them fresh. But I think we will survive. Williams was credited with one assisted tackle in the game with the frogs last year. Brooks had over 100 yards before his injury. One of those games where Texas let them back in it in the fourth.

I get the depth part, but the money on the margin (depth versus impact) is just not available at every position.

Great point. We lost out on that TCU edge rusher after the 21 season that everyone thought was a slam dunk. He went to Nebraska.
I think this may be to much analysis. From all accounts it boils down to money and trailer park u was willing to pony up more money than anyone else. They did the same thing back with bomar and ad. If money is all a kid is after then it will in all likelihood disrupt the locker room at normal colleges. Maybe at ou it doesnt matter but wish him luck.

I understand wanting the depth but we just lost 2 to the portal so I have to question how many guys are willing to sit when they can play at a lesser or different school. Was Baker a help on this or not, we will never know. Bo was solid for Texas and hated losing him.

Well Bo couldn't get him signed at LSU.

On DT Damonic Williams from OTF:

"At least twice on Thursday, Texas and at least one other college program were contacted by Damonic Williams' agent asking for "more". Yes, that's a tried and true negotiating tactic. I don't blame an agent for trying, nor should you. The response? Texas did not budge. So Williams announced for OU last night...Yes, NIL should be there. But it should be the last thing discussed, not the first. I'm not so sure that was ever the case in the Williams recruitment, even from the very outset, and perhaps why the juice just wasn't worth the squeeze."

I predict this gold-digger will be largely ineffective at OU, at least against Texas.
Sark will have an offensive scheme to neutralize this punk and put him on his *** a few times while we cruise to another ***-whipping of the trailer trash

More: Per Eric Nahlin of IT, “No matter who we talked to at different schools, oh my God, everybody was struggling with this guy.”

Translation: He was for sale. Maybe it’s better we didn’t get him.

SH: This is like the SWC in the early 80’s, only now it’s legal. David Berst would have had nothing to do…

While NIL has introduced plenty of challenges in collegiate athletics, methinks this is perhaps one area where it can really help by providing transparency to poor culture fits.
