2022 Transfer Season

I agree. I don’t get all the concern about backup pg with Hunter, Matharu and Morris all capable.
I don't see any PG with abilities worthy of a scholarship agreeing to come in and play five or six minutes a game behind Rori. Hunter, Matharu, and Morris can handle it when needed.

Hunter is a question mark. She had one outstanding game where she lit it up and then pretty much disappeared the rest of the season.
Matharu is no point guard. Morris can pg while Harmon catches a breather or sits due to foul trouble. Yeah we need a true pg that is willing to come off the bench.

Well no we really don’t. Harmon plays 35 mpg so kind of hard to find anybody better than Matharu, Hunter or Morris willing to do mop up duty. Not gonna find anybody any better than those 3 willing to be a backup. Joanne wasn’t a point guard either but she was serviceable, but certainly no better than those 3 I mentioned. Vic, at least to this point, disagrees with you….. I trust Vic!!!

I think having that one outstanding game (in the season opener FWIW) became something of a setback for Hunter. As if her mindset became "this college ball is easy", but then she quickly found out differently and never was able to repeat that success. I hope she has been working hard on her defense and comes ready tear it up her Soph season.

I will miss Kobe's enthusiasm on the sidelines, but I'm sure tired of the new, catchall "mental health" reason for transferring. Seems like this does nothing but conjure up images of folks enduring some kind of duress, instead of calling it what it is...you're disappointed in your playing time prospects.

:td:

On the roster, Kobe was listed as a G/F at 5' 11" - I'm assuming that translates to the 3. I believe she's more of a natural scorer than any of the other likely options at that position outside of Sonya but her defense is probably behind even the freshmen we brought in:
  • Shay - faster and more athletic than Kobe, much better defender and hit the occasional 3 (she really likes those corners). Has GOT to improve her FT shooting.
  • Sonya - More athletic, better defender and definitely a scorer. At 5' 10", she could play the position and has the length and quickness to defend most other teams' wings.
  • Ndjakalenga - Longer and faster than Kobe, better defensive instincts. She was a big offensive contributor in high school but have to temper scoring expectations considering the HS opposition.
  • Jordana - Similar to Ndjakalenga (longer, more athletic, better defender) than Kobe but faced a much higher level of HS opponent than Ndjakalenga. I only saw her play 1 game her senior year and she struggled with her midrange shot and her health is still a question mark for me.
I wish Kobe the best wherever she lands (unless it's Tech).

Ghenna Gabriel may disagree with you.

I totally missed the Kobe wasn't in any workout pictures. So with the latest image provided by Blair:

I counted 9 players. Looking at the UT roster, they list 14 players.
So if I do my math right, it's 14 + (unlisted Faye) - (Kobe) = 14?

So it looks like: Guitierrez, Gaston, Morris, Hunter are not there?

Gaston and Hunter have been in several videos of offseason S&C so they could simply have a class/scheduling conflict. I don't know that Morris is on campus yet and, IIRC, walk-ons (Gutierrez) have certain restrictions on working out with the team during the offseason.

There are exceptions to every rule, but I still think the term is overused to describe what is more often than not a simple scenario. Much like Ashley, I think Kobe realized she wasn't going to play much. Don't know much about her mental health, but I'm sure it made her emotionally sad. Being emotionally sad about something doesn't mean your mental health is at stake. Just wish a new term would come along.

Elena Lovato is currently in Argentina. Wonder if it’s for recruiting purposes? Can’t be vacation since Texas is in the middle of summer workouts so that’s the only thing I could think of is that we may be going international and could be the person Vic was mentioning when he said “we may not be done yet”.

I mentioned her trip to Buenos Aires in the 2023 Recruiting thread - the U18 Team USA is playing in the FIBA Americas Cup there. That team includes Aalyah Del Rosario (#13). Anybody who wants to catch the 2nd half of today's game vs Mexico...USA is up 47-18 at the half.

This team is going to be so kick-***, take names later, Final Four, and national championship contender.

Good deal. Thanks

Thank you for the info! Has to benefit well for Texas and I hope we can get her because she is a special player with so much potential.

In truly a backup role for a few minutes a game while Rori is on the bench catching a breater, yes, those players can fill in. But, if Rori (knock on wood) is out for an extended period of time, then what? Would love to have a true/natural PG added to our roster just in case . . .

Vic is obviously ok with the way things are. Again, hard to find a backup who is exclusively a pg who would actually be better than the 3 I mentioned. Most backup pgs on this level are indeed combo guards who fill in as needed.

I'm not sure he has ever said that.

What he was quoted as saying the other day in the Statesman article was "I might not be done," Schaefer said. That could mean a bunch of things. I can't see him bringing in another transfer Center or Power Forward. From a roster "need" perspective, I can definitely see him bringing in a transfer point guard, or to a much lesser extent, as shooting guard, especially if they are a great 3-point shooter which our roster could use. Any additional transfer would most likely be destined as a backup, regardless of position, unless we hit the jackpot with some elite transfer who would be an obvious starter.

Staff did a tremendous job improving our roster this offseason. Anything on top of the 3 transfers we signed will be a cherry on top!

You seem to be as sure of your opinion as I am. I never said Vic SAID THAT. but he certainly has not moved on it. Please name me a pg capable of playing on THIS LEVEL willing to sit and backup Rori who is more capable than the combo guards we already have. Again, most elite programs, unless they have a young recruit being groomed for the position, have combo guards who can backup the pg position. Even Stanford had Haley Jones handle the point a lot after their pg was injured. Anything is possible, but I don’t see us getting just a backup pg when we have others who could handle it. Another shooting guard? Perhaps….time will tell….

I've thrown out the name Gabby Connally several times. Not every player wants to be a starter; not sure of Gabby's objectives.

Grad-transfers sometimes are just in it for the education. Just like Jenna Ewert who transferred to our volleyball program from Colorado recently. Most likely a backup. Perhaps she always wanted to be part of a program that advances deep in the post-season.

I understand, but is she BETTER than what we presently have on THIS LEVEL? Stanford had another pg but had Haley Jones run it. Either way, we will be fine.

Maybe he gets her, but at this point, it hasn’t happened and not sure it will. No, had never even looked up her stats. Stats look good, but I trust Vic to determine what’s best. She’s been available for a while so who knows. Big question is she willing to take a lesser role? THAT is the issue. If we have a spot for her, then fine. It would add another 3 point shooter. I still believe we have adequate backup at pg without her. IF she’s willing to ride the pine and be a backup, I’m not against that.

As it pertains to depth at PG, just because we haven't added a transfer this offseason yet doesn't mean Vic hasn't tried; perhaps he has and been told "no thanks" a time or two.

Most on this forum agree it was going to be difficult adding a PG to our roster due to Rori's outstanding play as a true freshman and stranglehold on the position for the next 3 years. Chevalier can state a thousand reasons why she left, but we all know a lot of it had to do with her having to face the reality of being Rori's backup for 4 seasons.

We didn't sign a PG for the 2022 class even though Chevalier transferred out last December; so, we haven't added a direct replacement for her to the roster. We don't have a verbal commitment from a PG for the 2023 class; only seen a couple of names out there associated with Texas (like Hannah Hidalgo). Personally, I think it's gonna be very difficult to sign a PG 2023 or 2024; and, I'd rather skip signing a PG for 2024 to really aid our chances of signing 2025 PG Aaliyah Chavez.

It almost makes more sense to bring in a transfer PG who has only a year or two of eligibility remaining so it doesn't impact our 2023 scholarship numbers. But, if we take that route, we have to do it 2-3 years in a row.

You know what?..I forgot about her! She would absolutely be the answer in my opinion. I guess the biggest question I would still have is that, with her abilities, would she want to play so few minutes behind Rori? I just don't see Rori's minutes being cut back that much. I still see her playing 30 minutes per game at the very least.

Here's the summary on Gabby Connally:

- played 4 seasons at Georgia, and started most of her games there as their point guard; graduated
- this past season she did not play; took an internship with some secret service organization (in her native San Antonio, IIRC)
- she entered the transfer portal before the May 1 deadline
- supposedly, she's more set on finding a permanent job and start her professional career; but, if that doesn't happen soon, she's open to going to grad school and playing her final season of hoops

With that being said, I don't get the feeling she is on the path to playing hoops professionally. So, her being a starter might not be a huge requirement. Perhaps she wants to play for a program who is a contender to make the Final Four, and she is willing to contribute in any way she can. (yes, that's what I'm hoping)

Obviously, her head coach at Georgia is now at Texas A&M. I'm not really sure of their roster status at point guard. I know we have 2 scholarships open; not sure about the Aggies.

With the transfers we've discussed in this thread, and who is still available, if Vic wasn't referring to Connally when he was quoted as saying "I might not be done", then I honestly have no idea which other transfers(s) he could be targeting. I guess there's a chance it's not a transfer, but an international player instead.

I’ve been thinking Vic will need to find a unicorn if looking for someone to spell Rori for probably an avg of single digit minutes that has PG skills better than what could be cobbled together with players already on the roster and Connally just might be that rare find.

I know I’d feel a lot better having a true PG on the team that can back Rori up and possibly fill in in case of injury or sickness (Covid is still with us too). Would be nice if Rori could get a little more rest. I worried she was going to hit a wall last season. I don’t know how she does it with the energy she puts out in games. She also takes a beating physically sometimes because of her lack of size. I admit I worry about her getting injured even though she has demonstrated she’s one tough cookie. For her sake, I’d like to see her have to play just a few less minutes as much as I love watching her perform.
